The Mesa Verde Association is a joint membership program of the Mesa Verde Museum Association and the Mesa Verde Foundation. Your MVA membership supports both of these 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.

The Mesa Verde Museum Association (tax ID 84-1404606) provides educational and interpretive material to visitors of Mesa Verde National Park through an active publishing program and the operation of retail bookstores online, in the park, and in Cortez, CO. Our services enhance the visitor experience and promote stewardship of Mesa Verde's world-renowned archeological resources and natural landscapes. Proceeds from all Association operations are donated to the park's interpretive, research, and education programs.

The Mesa Verde Foundation (tax ID 84-046967) funds capital improvements, projects, and educational endeavors for Mesa Verde National Park. Our projects include construction of a new Visitor and Research Center near the park's entrance and remodeling the existing Far View Visitor Center into a Tribal Cultures Center to enhance understanding of the connection between the Ancestral Puebloans and contemporary Native American tribes.

Join Us for the Second Annual Wetherill Mesa Hike and Bike!

Everyone is invited to Mesa Verde National Park’s 2nd annual “Hike and Bike” on the Wetherill Mesa tram road on Saturday and Sunday, September 10 and 11. Entrance fees will be waived for those participating. This year, several native artists will be demonstrating traditional arts and crafts as well. Wetherill Mesa is closed for the season after Labor Day, but will re-open for hikers and bicyclists on September 10 and 11.

On both days, the Wetherill Mesa Road will open at 9:00 a.m. and close to entry at 3:30 p.m. All visitors must exit the Wetherill Road by 4:30 p.m. The Wetherill Mesa Road is located near mile 15 on the park road, just past Far View Lodge. From that junction, hikers and bicycle riders are invited to drive 12 miles to the Wetherill Mesa information kiosk, where several Native American artists will be demonstrating traditional arts and crafts. From that point, hikers and bicycle riders can ride or hike along the 5.5 mile long tram loop road. Along the route, stop at Long House, the second largest cliff dwelling in the park; hike into Step House; explore Badger House Community; and hike to views of Kodak House and Nordenskiöld #16. Park rangers and volunteers will be available to answer questions and point out unique features of each site.

Participants may bring a picnic lunch and drinking water, or may purchase a hot sandwich, chips and a drink for $6.00 from the Mesa Verde Community Club at the kiosk. “Last year’s first hike and bike was a great experience,” said Superintendent Spencer. “We hope visitors and local community residents will join us again this year.”

For safety’s sake, bicycle riding is not allowed on the Wetherill Mesa Road itself, due to its narrow condition and lack of shoulders. Dogs are not permitted on the tram road. Riders and hikers should keep safety in mind at all times: bring plenty of drinking water and high energy snacks, sun and wind protection. Wetherill Mesa is about 7,240 feet above sea level. Ute Mountain Ute Art Show Now on Display

Contemporary Ute Mountain Ute tribal art is now on exhibit in the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum Gallery and Museum Store in Mesa Verde National Park. This special opportunity for the public to view and purchase tribal artwork, including paintings, pottery, baskets and beadwork, is the result of a partnership between the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, the nonprofit Mesa Verde Museum Association, and the National Park Service. The exhibit and sale runs through Sunday, October 30, 2011. Admission to the Museum and gallery exhibit is free, but visitors must pay an entrance fee when they enter the national park. The Museum is currently open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Beginning October 16, the Museum will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The public is also invited to attend a special “Meet the Artists” reception with artists Norman Lansing and his daughter Babe Lansing on Monday, September 12, 2011 between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum Gallery. The artists will be on hand to introduce their works, share their inspirations, and answer questions in an informal setting.

The present Ute Mountain Ute Tribe reservation is located in the Southwest corner of Colorado, the northwest corner of New Mexico and a small area in Utah. Featured Ute artists in this exhibit include Norman Lansing along with various Ute Tribal artisans from the areas in and around Towaoc, Colorado and White Mesa, Utah. Proceeds from all show purchases support Mesa Verde National Park as well as the artisans and the tribe.

Hike to Spring House this Fall

We invite you to rediscover Mesa Verde by taking a special hiking tour with us this fall! The Mesa Verde Institute (an educational program of the Mesa Verde Museum Association) is partnering with the National Park Service to offer exciting new visitor experiences for a modest fee. Ranger-led hikes into Oak Tree House and Fire Temple and to Square Tower House have sold out for the year. Spaces on most dates are still available for the Spring House hikes, which are offered from September 2 through October 14 on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. This eight-hour hike brings you through the spectacular Navajo and Wickiup Canyons of the park. Spring House itself includes a rare, intact two-story structure.

Hike dates, fees, and program details are posted on www.mesaverdeinstitute.org. Registration is now open and you must register online in advance to participate. We hope you’ll take advantage of these rare opportunities to visit spectacular Mesa Verde archeological sites that are normally closed to the public. Click here today!
