Support Our Work with a Year-End Donation

MVA members look forward each year to receiving an Ancient Civilizations wall calendar as a benefit of membership. The 2011 calendars are in the mail! Thank you for your generous support of the important work that both the Mesa Verde Foundation and the Mesa Verde Museum Association undertake to promote park stewardship. We could not provide the funding, interpretive products, and educational programs we do without your help.

In these austere economic times, the fulfillment of our organizations' missions is more important than ever, since government appropriations are not sufficient to cover the park's operations, interpretation, research, and maintenance needs. If you love Mesa Verde and want to ensure its treasures continue to be shared with the world, please consider making a tax-deductible year-end contribution to the Mesa Verde Association. Contact us at 1-800-305-6053, 970-529-4445, or info@mesaverde.org for more information, or if you're an MVA member, send your gift to us using the handy form and envelope we enclosed with your calendar mailing.

Our services enhance the visitor experience and promote stewardship of Mesa Verde's world-renowned archeological resources and natural landscapes. Proceeds from all Association operations are donated to the park's interpretive, research, and education programs.

The Mesa Verde Foundation (tax ID 84-046967) funds capital improvements, projects, and educational endeavors for Mesa Verde National Park. Our projects include construction of a new Visitor and Research Center near the park's entrance and remodeling the existing Far View Visitor Center into a Tribal Cultures Center to enhance understanding of the connection between the Ancestral Puebloans and contemporary Native American tribes.

Annual Park Open House and Luminaria Lighting this Thursday

On Thursday, December 9, 2010, the staff of Mesa Verde National Park will host the 2010 Annual Holiday Open House from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the Chapin Mesa headquarters area. With our recent dry weather, the park road will likely be clear and ice-free, so there's no better time to join us! Everyone is invited to attend this holiday celebration featuring special tours, luminarias, musical entertainment, night sky interpretation, and refreshments. The regularly scheduled ranger-guided tours of Spruce Tree House, the third largest cliff dwelling in the park, will be presented at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. Special evening tours will be offered at 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Luminarias will glow along the pathways throughout the headquarters area, a National Historic Landmark District, and along the trail to Spruce Tree House. Dress warmly and bring a flashlight.

The Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum will remain open until 9:00 p.m. The Museum's Centennial Gallery will highlight the creative works of Dolores Elementary, Middle, and High School students. The students, directed by art teachers Amy Woodward and Laurelee MacHale, have used a variety of techniques, designs, and textures to showcase Mesa Verde and the American Southwest. The park is proud to display the artwork of these talented young artists.

There will be musical entertainment in the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum Auditorium throughout the evening. The schedule of performances is as follows:
6:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. ~ William Yazzie - Navajo flutist
6:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. ~ "Vixen" - Contemporary folk rock
7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. ~ "Wild Mountain" - Bluegrass
8:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. ~ Four Corners Community Band

The Fort Lewis College Bala Sinem choir will be singing along the trail to Spruce Tree House as part of the festivities for the evening.

From 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., there will be night sky interpretation provided at the tennis court in the Chapin Mesa headquarters area. Using the 9 ¼ inch telescope, a park ranger will show visitors the night sky, while telling Native American star stories as well as what the stars meant to ancient cultures.  Ask for directions to the tennis court at the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum.

The non-profit Mesa Verde Museum Association (MVMA) Museum bookstore will be open until 9:00 p.m. to highlight the sale of books, posters, puppets, historic photographs, and great holiday gifts. As a special offer for any purchase over $30.00, MVMA will give a gift set of one DVD Mesa Verde Treasures of the Past, five artifact postcards, and the 1926 Re-Excavation of Step House publication by Jesse L. Nusbaum. Bring your gift list along to take advantage of this special occasion. Proceeds from all bookstore sales benefit Mesa Verde National Park.

Attendance at the Open House is free. Complimentary refreshments will be provided by ARAMARK at the Spruce Tree Terrace, with generous cookie donations made by City Market (Cortez), Absolute Bakery (Mancos), Mr. Happy's Bakery & Café (Cortez), and Wal-Mart (Cortez).

No park entrance fee will be charged after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 9, 2010. Mark your calendar and plan to join us in the park festivities! And don't forget that Mesa Verde Association members are invited to a special pre-open house reception beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Superintendent's House; please e-mail us at info@mesaverde.org or call us at 970-529-4445 to RSVP and for directions.
