  Another Wetherill Mesa Bike/Hike Day

Come to Wetherill Mesa in Mesa Verde National Park this Saturday, October 9, 2010, and ride your bicycle or hike along the tram road. "Because of the success of this event on September 19, we have decided to repeat it this weekend," stated Deputy Superintendent Bill Nelligan. "We received many positive comments from those who came out to Wetherill last month, all of them encouraging us to do it again."

On Saturday, October 9, the Wetherill Mesa Road will open at 9:00 a.m., and the inbound gate will close at 3:30 p.m.; all visitors must exit the Wetherill Road by 5:00 p.m. The Wetherill Mesa Road is located near mile 15, just past Far View Lodge, on the west side of the park road. Visitors can drive down the Wetherill Mesa Road, park at the Wetherill kiosk, and cycle or hike along the tram road. Along the route visitors may stop at Long House, the second largest cliff dwelling in the park, hike into Step House, explore Badger House Community, and hike to views of Kodak House and Nordenskiöld #16. Park Rangers and volunteers will be available to answer questions and point out unique features of each site.

Bring your picnic lunch and drinking water. If you prefer, you may purchase lunch from the Mesa Verde Community Club at the kiosk. You may buy a hot dog or hamburger with chips and a drink for $5.00, or a cheeseburger with chips and a drink for $6.00. All proceeds from the lunch will go to the family of John Merrill, an employee of Mesa Verde National Park who recently died in a climbing accident. If you mention at the park entrance that you are here to bike or hike on Wetherill Mesa, your entrance fee will be waived.

Come and take advantage of this new opportunity in Mesa Verde National Park. If this pilot program is successful, the park will continue to introduce new programs and opportunities like this for visitors and local community residents.

Bicycle riding is not allowed on the Wetherill Mesa Road as it is too narrow for both vehicles and bike traffic. Dogs are not allowed on the tram road. Please keep your safety in mind at all times, bring enough water and high energy snacks to keep yourself hydrated and to maintain your energy level. If you have any questions, please contact the park at 529-4465.

New Visitor and Research Center
Construction Contract Awarded

The National Park Service awarded a $12,107,735 contract at Mesa Verde National Park September 9, 2010 to PCL Construction Services, Inc. (PCL) of Edwards, Colorado. PCL will construct the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center.

The Visitor Information Center and the Research/Museum Collection Facility, contracted and managed by the Denver Service Center of the NPS, will be constructed to form a single building - The Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center. The building will implement sustainable design features, high efficiency with an emphasis on alternative energy systems, and include all associated site work/infrastructure and native landscaping. The building has been designed to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) Platinum certification. The Visitor Information Center component will consist of orientation exhibits, tour ticket sales, and the nonprofit Mesa Verde Museum Association Bookstore. The Research and Museum Collection Facility building will replace the deteriorated temporary buildings and storage facilities with a consolidated, efficient and sustainable facility.

The new building will be located at the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park along Highway 160. Construction is expected to begin soon and be completed by July 2012. The exhibits will then be installed, with the target of opening the new Visitor and Research Center in October 2012.

"We were very pleased with bid results as now the National Park Service can move forward with construction. The project has been in the planning and design stage for a very long time. Soon, we will have a new building which will improve access to and study of more than 3 million artifacts, archives and library collections. In addition, it will provide critical visitor services at the entry to the park," stated Cliff Spencer, Superintendent, Mesa Verde National Park. Deputy Superintendent Bill Nelligan added that the park was pleased and appreciative for the assistance from the Mesa Verde Foundation for land acquisition near the park entrance.
