New Item! Chief Joseph Design MouseRug

First produced in the 1920's, the Chief Joseph blanket is one of the oldest, on-going blankets made by Pendleton Woolen Mills. The blanket pattern celebrates the heroism of the Northwest's great Nez Perce leader, Chief Joseph. Its design is balanced with arrowheads symbolizing bravery and pointing in all directions of Mother Earth.
Chief Joseph, known by his people as In-mut-too-yah-lat-lat ("Thunder coming up over the land from the water"), was best known for his resistance to the U.S. Government's attempts to force his tribe onto reservations. The Nez Perce were a peaceful nation spread from Idaho to northern Washington state and Chief Joseph assumed his role as Chief in 1877.
Now you can have a Chief Joseph "rug" of your own! The computer MouseRugs we stock are manufactured with vibrant Lextra Flock Graphics and made without ink. Microscopic flock fibers are arranged into intricate patterns and driven by high-voltage electricity in the exclusive Lextra Flock Graphics process. The resulting texture is soft, velvety, richly colored and permanent. MouseRugs combine stunning designs such as the Chief Joseph pattern with the luxurious feel of Lextra flock fibers. Far more than a mouse pad, functional MouseRug art also makes a thoughtful gift that will be used and appreciated for many years.
See the Chief Joseph pattern as well as our other vibrant mouse pad designs at www.mesaverde.org.

Special Wetherill Mesa Fall Bike/Hike Day
Come to Wetherill Mesa in Mesa Verde National Park on Sunday, September 19 and ride your bicycle or hike along the tram road. "Though Wetherill Mesa is usually closed for the season on Labor Day, we wanted to try opening the mesa on selected weekends during the fall to biking and hiking," stated William Nelligan, Acting Superintendent. "Fall is a great time to enjoy the park, with cooler weather and the changing colors of autumn."
On Sunday, September 19, the Wetherill Mesa Road will open at 9:00 a.m., and close at 3:30 p.m.; all visitors must exit the Wetherill Road by 5:00 p.m. The Wetherill Mesa Road is located near Mile 15, just past Far View Lodge, on the west side of the park road. Visitors can drive down the Wetherill Mesa Road, park at the Wetherill kiosk, and ride or hike along the tram road. Along the route visitors may stop at Long House, the second largest cliff dwelling in the park, hike into Step House, explore Badger House Community, and hike to views of Kodak House and Nordenskiöld #16. Park rangers and volunteers will be available to answer questions and point out unique features of each site.
Bring your picnic lunch and drinking water. If you prefer, you may purchase a hotdog, chips and a drink for $5.00 from the Mesa Verde Community Club at the Wetherill kiosk. If you mention that you are here to ride your bike or hike on Wetherill Mesa, your entrance fee will be waived.
We hope you will come and take advantage of this new visitor opportunity in Mesa Verde National Park. If this pilot program is successful, the park will continue to introduce new programs and opportunities for visitors and local community residents.
Bike riding is not allowed on the Wetherill Mesa Road as it is too narrow for both vehicles and bike traffic. Dogs are not allowed on the tram road. Please keep your safety in mind at all times, bring enough water and high energy snacks to keep yourself hydrated, and to maintain your energy level.

Free Park Entrance for National Public Lands Day

National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2009, 150,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants, planted trees and restored our water resources. Join us for the next NPLD on Saturday, September 25, 2010.
According to www.publiclandsday.org, a program of the National Environmental Education Foundation, "National Public Lands Day 2010 celebrates service and recreation on public lands while educating volunteers about the effects of climate change on our parks. NPLD engages a diverse audience of adult and youth volunteers to get to outdoors and improve their lands, whether at the grandest national park or at an urban park in their neighborhood. NPLD inspires a new generation of volunteers committed to service on public lands. The event also encourages volunteers to explore and enjoy America's natural wonders through outdoor recreation. After working hard, volunteers can take a hike, a swim, a bicycle ride and get healthy in America's backyard."
Feel like getting your hands dirty in the name of public lands? Find a volunteer service project at a site near you by visiting www.publiclandsday.org and click on "Find a Site."
In recognition of this special day, Mesa Verde National Park will waive entrance fees for all visitors on September 25, 2010. Come out and play in Mesa Verde for free! (Other fees such as cliff dwelling tours and campsite rentals will still apply.)
