Delayed Morning Opening of Spruce Tree House Trail for Resurfacing
The rehabilitation of the trail to Spruce Tree House trail resumed Wednesday, June 16 and will continue through Friday, July 16. On Mondays through Thursdays during this period, the trail will open at 10:00 a.m. daily and close at 6:30 p.m. On Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., park rangers will be available on the porch of the Chief Ranger's Office and at the Spruce Tree House overlook to answer questions. Both of these sites provide great views of Spruce Tree House. Access to the Petroglyph Point trailhead will also open at 10:00 a.m. on these days. On Fridays through Sundays, access to the Spruce Tree House trail and Petroglyph Point trailhead will revert to the normal hours of 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The rehabilitation of the popular Spruce Tree House trail is one of the projects funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). This is the first major rehabilitation of this trail since the 1930's. The project includes documentation of historic stone wall construction by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), repairing and stabilizing the historic CCC stone walls, restoring original CCC stone drainage structures, removal of old asphalt, stabilization of trail base, and resurfacing the trail with the recycled asphalt.

Treat Yourself to a Back-Country Hike or Twilight Tour This Summer
The Mesa Verde Institute, an educational program of the Mesa Verde Museum Association, has brought back the popular day-long Spring House and two-hour Mug House hikes last offered during the park's 2006 Centennial Celebration, and we've added a day-long "Wetherill Mesa Experience" hike to the Institute slate. These daily ranger-led tours are offered in partnership with the National Park Service for just this summer. Tickets for Spring House and Wetherill Mesa Experience must be purchased by noon the day before the hike, and are being sold exclusively online at www.mesaverdeinstitute.org. These all-day hikes are just $35 per person; the price includes a hearty lunch and trail snacks from Cortez's Once Upon a Sandwich. Tickets are selling steadily, but many dates have openings. The Wetherill Mesa Experience hike is available only through September 6, and the Spring House hike is available through September 30.
Mug House Hikes and Cliff Palace Twilight Tours (with historical figures from the park's past) also continue daily through September 6. Tickets for these activities are sold up to two days in advance exclusively in person at the Far View Visitor Center MVMA Bookstore. Mug House is $15 per person, and Cliff Palace Twilight Tours are $10 per person. The image accompanying this article is of the unique square kiva found at Mug House. More information about all Institute programs is available now at our newly-updated website at www.mesaverdeinstitute.org. As always, Institute and Museum Association proceeds support Mesa Verde National Park.

Every year thousands of visitors snap photos of the spectacular, world-famous cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park. To help you capture the best light and perspective of these remarkable structures, the Mesa Verde Institute will offer its popular fall photography workshop led by Dr. Gene Balzer, Professor of Photography and Senior Faculty Member at Northern Arizona University.

New Book: The Cliff Dwellings Speak
This highly-anticipated new book is intended as an introduction to Southwestern archeology, specifically for casual visitors. The book will guide you around a site in Sherlock Holmes fashion, giving you very real tools for understanding cliff dwellings -- whether you are on a Mesa Verde National Park tour bus or backpacking in Mexico. The Cliff Dwellings Speak also introduces readers to the descendants of the cliff dwellers -- the Pueblo people of the Southwest who still live there today. The book is highly illustrated with black and white photographs and engravings from rare antique books. Using copious illustrations, field Guides in some chapters show the reader what to look for, and what it might mean. The Cliff Dwellings Speak is very different from any other book regarding understanding the Greater American Southwest.
Authors Bill and Beth Sagstetter, a researcher/photographer/writer team, have been exploring the backcountry of the Greater American Southwest for over forty years. They are the authors of three other titles including the best-selling book, The Mining Camps Speak, along with hundreds of magazine articles and four documentary television programs. Perfect paperback, 360 pages. $24.95. Click here to purchase your copy online.
