Experience Mesa Verde in Winter
|
|
Did you know that Mesa Verde National Park is open year-round? A winter visit to the park offers you many unique ways to experience the park, such as cross-country skiing through Morefield Campground, snowshoeing to the Cliff Palace viewpoint, or attending a free ranger-led tour of Spruce Tree House (the park's best-preserved cliff dwelling). Wildlife sightings can be more frequent in winter, and a surprising variety of birds remain active here during the colder months. If the weather outside is frightful, remember that the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum exhibits and bookstore are open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Spruce Tree Terrace serves the best chili around (along with other tasty menu selections), daily from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All activities depend on weather conditions. Please check with a ranger for trail and road conditions before setting out on your adventure. You can also read the park's winter visitor guide here.Come visit the quieter side of Mesa Verde this winter!

MVMA and Mesa Verde's Community Volunteers - An Expanding Partnership
One of the
continuing legacies of Mesa
Verde National
Park's 2006 Centennial Celebration has been the strong
partnership between local community volunteers, the park, and the Mesa Verde Museum
Association. The volunteer program was started
in 2005 to help with the park's 100th birthday festivities; the program was
awarded the coveted Hartzog Award as the National Park Service's Volunteer
Program of the Year for 2006; and it continues to grow, each year developing
new ways for people to get involved.
Much of the volunteers'
work is concentrated in the summer months when park visitation is
greatest. Between Memorial Day and Labor
Day, one to three volunteers work at the Far View Visitor Center
daily introducing visitors to the park and helping them plan their days. Also during the summer, volunteers staff MVMA's
water kiosk at Cliff
Palace -- selling water
(since there are no drinking fountains out there), answering questions, and providing
a friendly, knowledgeable "face of the park" for visitors.
In these visitor
service activities, the mission of the volunteers is to enhance the visitor
experience and understanding the significance of the park's resources. In addition, park volunteers are involved in other
activities, including developing and conducting educational activities with
young visitors and working with the park's natural and cultural resources. Volunteers collect and archive data as well
as maintain boundary fences, hiking trails, archaeological sites, and landscaped
areas. Some work with the professional
maintenance staff, and still others help with special events in the park,
perhaps folding and lighting luminarias or greeting people and managing
traffic.
The activities that
local volunteers undertake are limited only by their numbers and imaginations. You're welcome to join these efforts and can
do so at the program website www.MesaVerdeVolunteers.org,
through the MVMA office, or by calling Volunteer Coordinators Cheryl and Chuck
Carson at (970) 259-2699. You'll
determine what you'll do and how much you'll be involved; some volunteers work
as little as once per year, while others are in the park twice a week all
summer. We invite you to give back to your park by volunteering in Mesa Verde
this year!

Discover Mesa Verde...in Florida!
If winter sports aren't your thing, perhaps a trip to Florida is in order. Visitors to that region last month who attended the South Florida Fair were greeted by a 200-ton sand sculpture depicting Cliff Palace! Palm Beach County, Florida, featured America's National Parks at its annual fair, January 15 through 31, 2010. According to fair organizers, attendees could experience Biscayne National Park through an 8 foot salt water aquarium, coral reefs, mangroves, a replica of the Boca Chita lighthouse and more, including authentic shipwreck items. Everglades National Park presented the Cypress Dome experience. A 25-foot waterfall graced a representation of Yosemite. You could measure yourself against and walk through a 35-foot replica of a giant Sequoia tree as found in Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks, step through a bamboo forest at Haleakala National Park, and check out Carlsbad Caverns. Yellowstone's Old Faithful erupted every 15 minutes. Rangers from many national parks, including Mesa Verde, were on hand to discuss the remarkable resources that await visitors at America's national parks and public lands. Metate Room Earns Prestigious Award
Metate Room Restaurant, located in the Far View Lodge at Mesa Verde National Park, recently received the American Culinary Federation Colorado Chefs Association's (ACFCCA) first-ever "Award of Culinary Excellence." Metate Room Restaurant is one of six winners and the only restaurant located within a national park to receive the award.
The culinary excellence awards are based on a variety of criteria, including menu selection, creativity, presentation, taste, and the restaurant's support of local Colorado cuisine. The award highlighted Metate Room Restaurant's involvement with "Colorado Proud," a program created by the Colorado Department of Agriculture to promote Colorado food and agricultural products. This past summer, Chef Brian Puett competed in the Colorado State Fair cook-off as a part of the program.
"ARAMARK's chefs are known for creating regional dishes that incorporate sustainable cuisine and organic ingredients, and Metate Room Restaurant and Chef Puett are shining examples of that commitment," said Director of Sales and Marketing of ARAMARK at Mesa Verde, Judith Swain.
"On behalf of ARAMARK Parks and Destinations and Metate Room Restaurant, it is an honor to receive this prestigious award that encourages and recognizes chefs who incorporate sustainable and locally-grown ingredients in their menus," said Executive Chef Brian Puett.
We offer our congratulations to ARAMARK and Chef Puett, and we hungrily look forward to Metate Room's seasonal opening on April 22, 2010. For more information, check out www.visitmesaverde.com.
