| Mesa Verde Foundation Donates 37 Acres for New Mesa Verde
Visitor & Research Center |
|
On October 20, 2009, the Mesa Verde Foundation donated 37.6 acres of land
to Mesa Verde National Park.
The land, which is shown in the foreground of the above photo (image courtesy
of Paul Balaguer), is part of the site near the park's entrance on which the
new Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center will be built. Groundbreaking for
the new facility is slated for spring of 2010, with completion in late 2011.
Mesa Verde Foundation
purchased the land in 1999 for $188,000. Funds for the land were raised from a
consortium of private donors. The Foundation lobbied Congress to expand the
park to include this land, which resulted in the Mesa Verde Expansion Act
passed in December 2007. |

Park Superintendent Larry Wiese Retires
|
|
Larry Wiese retired from the National Park Service after 16
years as Mesa Verde's superintendent, capping his 39-year career of working in
some of the United States'
most beautiful places. Larry's steadfast leadership benefitted Mesa Verde
National Park enormously.
During his tenure, Congressional budget allocations increased more than 100%,
plans and funding were secured for a new Visitor and Research Center at the
park entrance, and the park marked its Centennial anniversary with memorable
celebrations, unique hikes, special publications, and the formation of the nonprofit
Mesa Verde Institute (an educational program of the Mesa Verde Museum
Association).
More than 100 park staff, NPS leaders, and community
partners sent Larry off in style at a Hawaiian-themed dinner on October 23rd.
They presented him with many gifts, including a stunning Corn Maiden katsina
crafted by Gerry Quotskuyva. In the photo above (courtesy of Tom Vaughan, FeVa
Photos), Larry admires the katsina as Deputy Superintendent and emcee Bill
Nelligan looks on.
The Mesa Verde Foundation and Mesa Verde Museum Association
boards and staff bid a fond farewell to Larry and his wife Donna, and we wish
them many blissful years of good health, fun, and relaxation in retirement.
Bill Nelligan will serve as the acting Superintendent while
the NPS undertakes the six-month process to select a new superintendent.
