Together we are offering the opportunity to support the work of both our organizations through a unique joint membership!

Existing MVMA members are now automatically "Mesa Verde Association (MVA)" members, with a portion of your dues supporting the work of the Foundation as well as the Museum Association. MVA members receive many benefits, such as a 20% discount when shopping in Museum Association stores and by phone or mail, an annual wall calendar, discounts at most cooperating association bookstores in public lands across the country. And now, all MVA members also receive a 20% discount on Mesa Verde Institute programs (excluding Cliff Palace Twilight Tours)!

The Mesa Verde Foundation funds capital improvements, projects, and educational endeavors for Mesa Verde National Park. MVF projects include the construction of a new Visitor and Research Center near the park's entrance, and the remodeling of the existing Far View Visitor Center into a Tribal Cultures Center to enhance understanding of the connection between Ancestral Puebloans and contemporary Native American tribes.

The Mesa Verde Museum Association provides educational and interpretive material to visitors of Mesa Verde National Park through an active publishing program and the operation of retail bookstores online, in the park, and in Cortez, CO. Our services enhance the visitor experience and promote stewardship of Mesa Verde's world-renowned archeological resources and natural landscapes. Mesa Verde Welcomes 2009 Colorado Preserve America Youth Summit

More than one hundred Colorado and Hopi middle and high school students participated in the 2009 Colorado Preserve America Youth Summit last month, which culminated with an overnight stay in Mesa Verde National Park. The summit was geared to help youth learn about culture, site and land stewardship on public lands. The students learned about cultural sites managed by the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service, along with the National Park Service, which allowed them to look at sustainability, opportunities, and stewardship (S.O.S.) as it relates to Southwest archaeology. They also had the unique opportunity to give stewardship recommendations to public land managers based on what they experienced during the summit.

The trip itself made history because it is the only program in the nation that directly involves youth in decision-making about historic places, according to Colorado's First Lady Jeannie Ritter, Honorary Chair. Students applied to participate and received scholarships made available by the program sponsors.

The Youth Summit was a collaborative project funded by Colorado Preservation, Inc., Colorado Historical Society - State Historical Fund, National Park Service, Anshutz Family Foundation, Ballantine Family Foundation, Bureau of Land Management, Colorado Humanities, Teaching with Primary Sources, and the U.S. Forest Service. Students also received gift bags with items from the sponsors and the Mesa Verde Museum Association, Anasazi Heritage Center, Crow Canyon Archaeological Center and ARAMARK.

Visit Mesa Verde for Free August 15-16!

The National Park Service is continuing to offer special fee-free weekends this summer to encourage Americans seeking affordable vacations to visit our national treasures. "Tourism income helps America's economic recovery," Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said when he announced the free-admission weekends program. Most Americans live less than a day's drive from a park. Nationwide, parks last year attracted more that 275 million recreation visits. Spending by non-local visitors provided $10.6 billion for local economies, supporting more that 213,000 jobs, not counting National Park Service jobs.

There are 391 national park units across the country in 49 states; 147 of them charge an entry fee. During the peak summer season in Mesa Verde National Park, the entrance fee is $15 per vehicle and $8 per motorcycle. These entrance fees will be waived on August 15 and 16, 2009.

While visitors will still need to purchase the $3 ticket if they want to attend ranger-led tours of Balcony House, Cliff Palace and Long House, there are several free sites including Spruce Tree House, Step House and the Mesa Top Loop sites. Tour tickets may be purchased at the Morefield Ranger Station from 5 to 8:30 p.m. daily, and at the Far View Visitor Center from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Special Cliff Palace Twilight Tour tickets are also sold exclusively at the Visitor Center Bookstore for $10 per person. Rangers depict historical figures from the park's past in this unique 90-minute program, which is limited to 20 participants. Presented by the Mesa Verde Institute in partnership with the National Park Service, proceeds from the Cliff Palace Twilight Tours benefit Mesa Verde National Park.

For more information about fee-free weekends or MVI's Twilight Tours, please call the MVMA office at 970-529-4445 or toll-free at 800-305-6053.

Booksigning with Children's Author Betty Bauer

During the park's free-admission weekend on August 15 and 16, a booksigning with noted author Betty Bauer will be offered by MVMA in cooperation with the National Park Service. Suitable for children of all ages, Bison and Burro is a delightful journey from the grasslands of Kansas to the Four Corners. As they travel along in a Jeep commandeered from a park ranger, these animal friends count by fives the things they find or see along the way.

Betty Bauer writes children's stories about raising sheep and about traveling through national parks and on the Lewis and Clark Trail. She often accompanies study tours for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Betty and her husband live in Overland Park, Kansas, and are part-owners of a conservation ranch near Fort Collins, Colorado.

Bison and Burro will be available for sale at the MVMA Museum store during the event, or click here to purchase your copies in advance.

New Product: A Century of Archeological Research at
Mesa Verde National Park

In 2006, Mesa Verde National Park celebrated 100 years of existence as the first national park set aside expressly to protect cultural resources. As part of that celebration, in May 2006, the park and Mesa Verde Museum Association hosted a four-day symposium featuring many of the most prominent figures in southwestern archeology and related fields.

Small Mesa Verde Institute LogoSpeakers looked back at the first century of archeological study throughout the Southwest. They looked in more detail at the previous decade, the influences of new technology, new theories, and new techniques for stabilizing sites and structures. And they looked forward, considering the benefits and applications of continuously changing technology as well as cultural and political influences.

MVMA is proud to offer this new collection of symposium presenters' findings, conclusions, and recommendations, captured in an easily searchable pdf document. Users can read each of the papers and abstracts complete with associated illustrations as presented at the symposium. Without having to rely on an index, you can also search the entire CD by topic or name, finding all related references and discussions.

A must for both professional and amateur archeologists, this CD retails for $19.99. As always, Mesa Verde Association members receive a 20% discount when you order by phone or mail, bringing your price to just $15.99.
