Passiflora Tea Room Newsletter

                                    pumpkins

Dear Friends,

This morning in our lovely Northwest hills , "the frost was on the pumpkin".  The season of going inward, of contemplation and Thanksgiving beckons us.  We are lucky to live in a country that sets one day aside for gratitude...that gives us the opportunity to make this a daily practice.

I reflect on 6 years of small business ownership in a small, local community where I have been blessed to know so many of my customers by name, and I can count many of my customers and employees as friends.   To express our gratitude to you for your loyalty to Passiflora, we are asking you to join us on SATURDAY NOVEMBER 21st for Passiflora's birthday celebration.  We will be serving free cake and tea all day, and everything in the shop will be 20% off.

Thank you to all the customers who contributed to our FOODSHARE drive.  We were able to contribute approximately $320 to FOODSHARE this month.  FOODSHARE is an amazing organization; Hopefully, all of you can keep giving through local drives and through the web site below.  The facts are stark...There are 49 Million Americans ---that's 1 in 6 Americans--- who do not get enough to get.  Can you give a can a week?  A dollar a week?

I was compelled to read about a new book,  29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life By Cami Walker.  (Check it out on our shelves in December)  Ms. Walker focused each day on giving simple gifts, focusing on what she had to offer the world.  In the process, her MS symptoms lightened.  5,000 people in 38 countries have joined her movement.  I'm excited about doing so....so if you see me putting an herbal tea into your hand for free, you are my gift to myself in "happy thinking" for that day.

Another new release to check out is a DVD, recently released, on the wonder of plants entitled Numen: The Nature of Plants.  This documentary focuses on the healing power of plants and the natural world.  The filmmakers traveled the US to speak to doctors and herbalists, ethnobotanists and others.   Through the link below, you can watch a 10-minute preview on you tube. Enjoy!

Check out our amazing December schedule for our Thursday Night Gather with Friends Events which include Chocolate as Medicine and two wonderful meditations...offered up to the community FOR FREE.

On the winter, vital health front, I continue to share information about those herbs that can aid you this winter in prevention and lightening symptoms of colds and flus.  Please contact me if you have any questions via our e-mail at info@passiflorateas.com.

Ayurveda, the Indian Science of Life, illuminates us with some simple common sense approaches to winter health, to minimize vata which is cool, dry and moving:

·        Eat seasonally:
-warm slow-cooked soups, stews, root vegetables,  and oatmeal (decrease cold salads)
-foods that are naturally sweet, moist and warm
-add oils that are naturally nutritive, such as organic walnut, olive oil, ghee, organic coconut oil
·
Prior to showering,  apply organic sesame oil,  which is also warm and moist in a self-massage, moving lymph
·        Sleep well and deeply with a bedtime treat: 4 to 6 ounces warm almond milk, with ½ turmeric powder, ¼ teaspoon ginger root powder, ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder and a pinch of nutmeg.
·        Walk in nature for at least 30 minutes each day, to ground your spirit.
·        PRACTICE EXTREME SELF-CARE

In closing... to all my customers, clients, employees and, most importantly,  my family  ----Thank you.

May the blessings of winter be yours,
Karen Tyson

Real Chocolate For Health- Chocolate Tasting with Elaine Blackwood

For centuries, chocolate has been regarded as a food of the gods and royalty, a food of passion and decadence, love and comfort, energy and healing.  The extent of unprocessed cocoa's health benefits, particularly its antioxidant potential, is now being rediscovered.  However, chocolate products in stores use refined sugars, transfats, and preservatives. Please join Elaine Blackwood to learn the history of chocolate and its health benefits:  sample a delicious Belgian chocolate, cold processed to retain its natural health potential. Elaine has channeled her lifelong commitment to health care and wellness into practicing Employment Law and representing numerous health care providers.

Did you know that crystals can be classified into one of seven families and that each of us belong to one of those soul families? Crystals have been our partners and a part of us since the beginning of this experiment called Earth. We wear them, drink them and eat them.. Learn about the seven families. Why are you attracted to specific stones and how can crystals help you clear and protect your home, deepen your meditation and balance your energetic system? Prevention the True Universal Health Care---
Building the Foundation of Winter Health

By now, you are bored with how often you wash you hands, but please continue... Wash your hands in warm non-microbial soap (for at least the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice to yourself).  Use essential oils such as spruce,  pine, frankincense, lavender and rosemary, in cool air nebulizers, steams,  or on a wet washcloth at the base of the shower.  All lavender essential oil can be applied directly to the skin and is calming, sleeping inducing and highly anti-microbial.  Enjoy Floracopeia Hand Sanitizer, which is so softening to your hands, can also be sprayed and surfaces, and contains a magical blend of essential oils.

Herbal Prevention:
As far as prevention, there are some herbs that you can take to strengthen your underlying immune system:

        Astragalus (A.Membranaceus)
o        Rebuilds and strengthens the immune system. Also, used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to reduce symptoms of chronic lung deficiency, lower blood sugar, and protect the heart.

o        Can be taken as a tea  (Mountain Rose Herbs): 10-16 pieces dried root to 16 ounces of water, decoct 30 to 40 minutes,  then steep 1 hour.  Refrigerate for up to 3 days. Drink 2 cups per day; OR Tincture (Herbalist and Alchemist): 40 to 80 drops, three times a day; OR Capsules (Vital Nutrients): 1,000 mg a day.

·          Elderberry Fruit (Sambucus nigra, S. Canadensis)
o        Elderberries are rich in Vitamin C, flavonoids and anti-viral proteins.  Elderberry in the form of an extract, tincture or syrup can be taken both as part of  a flu preventative or treatment regimen. In addition, its flavonoids strengthen the capillaries in the eyes and have  an anti-histamine effect, reducing sinus allergies.

o        Tincture: 60 to 90 drops, four times a day (Herbalist and Alchemist); OR
Solid Extract: ½ teaspoon , 1 to 2 times a day

         Reishi Mushroom(Ganoderma lucidum, G.sinensis)
o        This amazingly powerful mushroom is gentle enough to give to children (although the tincture takes extremely unpleasant).  Medicinal mushrooms are wonders for the immune system---regulating and balancing our immune systems with their inherent wisdom, in conditions as diverse as cancer, lupus and the flu.  Reishi is also an anti-oxidant, nervine, cardio tonic and liver protectant.
o        We recommend this wonderful mushroom be taken in Tablet format in a food-based blend by Megafoods or New Chapter.

Other immune strengthening formulas to research and consider:
-Chyavanaprash- --an ancient Ayurvedic remedy and delicious herbal jam. It is prepared in base of amalaki fruit, which is one of the richest food-based sources of Vitamin C and anti-oxidants.  This jam is rejuvenating and strengthening to the entire body, also promoting digestion and metabolism.
-Local raw or manuka honey/garlic is excellent simple cough remedies.  Also, you can cut up a garlic clove, let it sit for 15 to 20 enhancing its immune strengthening biochemistry, combine it with honey and swallow.
 - Chrysanthemum tea- a pleasant, "do not harm", mild anti-viral - that can be prepared each day to help increase immunity

Herbs you might consider for your home apothecary for the flu season to help moderate symptoms:

Yin Qiao: an ancient Chinese anti-viral formula (sourced from out country), containing Honeysuckle and Forsythia
Anti-Viral Tinctures: such as Japanese Honeysuckle, Lomatium, Licorice, Chrysanthemum and Andrographis
Body Pain Reliever Tinctures: Boneset, Lemon Balm, Tulsi or Black Cohosh

Our Herbal Flu Symptom Reducer Tea: Containing Tulsi, Chrysanthemum, Elderflower, Lemon Balm, Yarrow and Peppermint

You have a precious body, treat it with care.
Best wishes for a healthy, vital fall and winter.
