Dear Customers and Friends,
As I have watched and participated in the flurry of packing activity at my dining room table, I have watched the passing of time before my eyes.  The summer started in a whirlwind and continued till the whirlwind felt spent... of packing one child up from college in CA to return to CT for the summer, to high school graduation, to middle school graduation, to summer recitals, to summer study in Berlin, to ranch camp, to Spanish camp, to study abroad in Copenhagen, to leaving for college in NYC, to starting new schools, to acquiring new animals etc.

And so, as we pray that this Fall our government will find a way to insure all Americans
against the catastrophes that can effect any of us in health, we enter a season in CT that represents, for most of us, our day-to-day life. Ayurveda refers to this as VATA, the season of air, space, coolness and dryness.

VAta can also be viewed as a  season of life; one that sends otherwise sensible people off
on government airplanes to visit their mistresses (or misters - what is the masculine name for this?) in exotic foreign countries while the rest of stay here and rake leaves, pay bills, put the snow tires on, cook dinner or change the diapers....the number of mundane tasks that comprise our lives. How do some people make it through this time of their life with less scars and healthy wisdom, while others blow up their lives?  Who, as they have shoveled their front walk, doesn't want to be that governor that I am alluding to frolicking in some South American country? To those of you who can't afford to hop on that plane or feel the tug of something here...remember that you are blessed, because the answer is inside of you.  And the coming seasons gives us chances to re-connect with this.

So, how do we survive this coming Fall, this air, space, coolness and dryness, with its
anecdote of warmth and earthiness.

This newsletter provides you with Great Happenings
at PASSIFLORA, where, hopefully, we serve a purpose, in helping you to connect with the local community and have tea and nourishment with those you love.

Each two weeks, I will be running a piece called, BUILDING THE FOUNDATION OF WINTER HEALTH...the true UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, where I discuss how to ground yourself for the coming season (FLU fears and all).

Essential Oils will play a vital role in "community immunity" and  in each Newsletter, we will be featuring a FLORACOPEIA essential oil.  As our garden shifts to winter squashes, our menu will continue to change to reflect the seasons.

Continue to visit our farmer's markets,
hike our paths and trails, have family dinner, and visit your local yoga center.
May your vata season be grounded in your true self and the warmth of Family
and Friends,
Karen and the Passiflora Goddesses
Chefs: Jimmy (God of Soups), Carol (Goddess of Deserts),
Abby (Goddess of the Garden), and Tom (Culinary intern)

First Line Therapy: Your Route to Vital Health with Matthew N. Pagano, D.C.
As you may be aware, the N. I.H. and C.D.C. have both recommended therapeutic lifestyle changes-such as diet, nutrition, and exercise-to address the underlying cause of many chronic illnesses. Dr. Pagano's lecture will focus on the causes and incidence of many chronic diseases of adulthood and a strategy called First Line Therapy that can improve upon these conditions. First Line Therapy is a 12-week program that includes an initial assessment of body composition and an individualized nutritional program, incorporating medical foods and/or dietary supplements.

BUILDING THE FOUNDATION OF
WINTER HEALTH
----
THE TRUE UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE

As we enter the Fall, with its cool, dry, and windy weather, there are many practices we can undertake to build the foundation for winter health.

1. SEVERAL APPLES  A DAY KEEPS THE
DOCTOR
AWAY

Apples are a wonderful,  natural anecdote to Fall.
Summer has been hot, and Fall tends to be dry and
windy.  AS a result, our bodies may try to re-balance
and produce overreactive mucus, that can become a breeding
ground for germs.  Apples are a wonderful seasonal
food solution, and so inexpensive.  Through apples, our
colon is cleansed of summer's hot and fall's dryness.

Our local farmer's markets are already brimming with
apples---what a great way to support our local
economy.   We have two orchards right here in New
Hartford---Hayward Farms and Burdicks.  From now,
until November, you will find a fresh apple awaiting you
at Passiflora. And, hopefully CHEF CAROL, our kitchen
desert goddess, will certainly get the "apple bug"
and produce apple deserts, along with LITTLE WOMEN's
KITCHEN, a long-time friend of PASSIFLORA.

2. RUN AROUND NAKED IN THE SUN----
BUT ONLY AT
MID-DAY

Vitamin D3 is one of your best insurance policy's
against seasonal flu.  Everytime you expose your
skin to 20 minutes of the sun, between 11am and
1 pm, you are building up tens of thousands of Vit
D3, stored to create a strong immune system for the
winter. Because people are so deficient, due to
our lifestyles and diet, we recommend a "do no
harm dosage" of 2,000 IUs of Vit D3 supplement
a day. At your next physical, have your 25-hydroxy D
level checked in your standard blood work,
to make sure you shouldn't be taking more.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating
the role of Vitamin D in prevention of the Swine Flu.
In a study conducted in 1946, a researcher discovered
that mice that received diets low in Vitamin D were
more susceptible to experimental swine Flu infection.
The  present-day researchers are investigating the
theory that Vit D increases the production of anti-microbial substances in the body that possess neutralizing
activity against a variety of infectious agents.

We recommend a FOOD BASED VITAMIN D by MEGAFOODS.

3. COMMUNITY IMMUNITY IS INCREASED THROUGH THE USE OF ESSENTIAL OILS

David Crowe, the owner of Floracopeia essential oils,
has conducted amazing blogs and podcasts on his
Web Site about the crucial role that essential oils play
in "Community Immunity".  To quote, David:

"Since the 1800s, scientific research has compiled a
substantial body of evidence demonstating that essential
oils have powerful anti-microbial effects against
a broad range of bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens.
Essential oils are part of the plant's immune system,
created by evolutionary intelligence, primarily for
repelling pathogens."  David goes on to discuss the
science as to why the most effective way to reduce
contagion with essential oils is through diffusers and
nebulizers.

For example, a forest community such as pines and
spruces contain monoterpenes which are these big trees
ways of protecting themselves and repelling pathogens.
