Children's Mental Health Awareness Day
childrens awareness
National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day will be observed on May 6, 2010, which coincides with May being National Mental Health Awareness Month. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reports that in 2006, 21 percent of youth aged 12-17 received treatment of counseling for emotional or behavioral problems in the previous year. It is likely that a similar percentage in Erie County also have serious mental health needs. Through our mentoring/volunteer programs Compeer helps many children in our community. However, there are still over 250 children on our waiting list.

National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day is an opportunity for the community to better understand the value Compeer provides for the children and their families in our programs. It will also be a day to specifically focus on increasing basic awareness of the importance positive mental health has on a child's healthy development, with the key message that "positive mental health is essential to a child's healthy development from birth."
