ENEWS FROM YOUR LOCAL UNITED WAY
November 2010

turkey

Greetings!

I bet if you asked 10 people what the United Way does most would say, "Raise money".  Although true the real answer has to do with the impact of these gifts. The best answer is we improve the lives of people in our community. In the most basic terms United Way does four things: (1) We raise money (2) we invest these gifts by giving grants (3) we connect volunteers to meaningful opportunities (4) we work with community partners to create responses to unmet needs.

To assure we remain both efficient and effective in each of these areas we use several committees to continually evaluate and improve how we operate. These committees are comprised of a mix of people from our community. Some are professionals, some are from the agencies we serve, others are volunteers seeking a way to serve. If you are interested in the work we do please consider joining one of our committees. Yet another way to Live United!

Family Volunteer Day

Join us at the Presbyterian Church Saturday Nov. 13th at 9:00 am until 12:00 noon.   A light breakfast will be served at 9:00 am, followed by a service project benefitting Safe Harbor, a seasonal overnight shelter for homeless persons.  The service project will be geared to children so everyone can participate.

United Way believes that volunteering during childhood builds a strong foundation for continued community service as an adult.  Family volunteering encourages the members of a family to do things together. Family volunteering can be as simple as drawing cards for children in the hospital or as complex as bonding hundreds of families together in a day of volunteer work at a community park. However families choose to do it, family volunteering can help mobilize thousands of new volunteers to meet community needs and instill a lifelong commitment to volunteering.

Why Should Your Family Volunteer? Family volunteering is a hands-on way to teach children the values of kindness, compassion, tolerance, community responsibility and good citizenship. Other benefits to your family include:

  • Strengthens family communication and bonds
  • Allows family members to be role models
  • Increases commitment to volunteering & community
  • Provides quality family time.

For more information about getting your family involved in this or any volunteer project please contact Amanda Hilt, 231-947-3200 x 206
