Gloves
Greetings!

There are several sources that, when combined, make up United Way's Annual Giving Campaign. The majority of these gifts come from employees who choose to have a portion of their paycheck withheld to support community needs. This includes gifts from both state and federal employees.  We also reach out to thousands of your friends and neighbors who cannot give through the workplace. In the coming weeks, letters will be sent asking these people to give through United Way. I hope each of you who believe in the work of United Way will encourage those you know to consider supporting the community by making a gift through United Way.

Sincerely,
Steve Wade, Executive Director

SAVE THE DATE
Support your favorite charitable organization simply by going shopping! Saturday, November 13, 2010 is Shop Your Community Day in Downtown Traverse City.  Businesses will be donating 15% of your purchase to the agency of your choice.  For a list of participating businesses and agencies check out the flyer.

Sock It To 'Em

Can you help us keep children's feet warm this winter?  Our annual Sock Drive "Sock It To Em!" begins in November and we are asking for your support!  You can drop new socks off at the United Way office, 521 S. Union St.  Or decorate a box in your office, school, church, or home and collect them all month.  We will donate them to the Northwest Michigan Food Coalition and they will put them in the food baskets they hand out in December. There is nothing worse than cold toes!

Afghan Angel Recption

Fall is here and that means we need to think about keeping warm!  The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Afghan Angels, has knit or crocheted over one hundred afghans to keep shut-in seniors warm this winter.  We will display these works of art at the annual Afghan Angel reception Thursday, November 11th beginning at 2:00pm,  at the United Way of Northwest Michigan office.  Join us for refreshments and congratulations for these masterpieces. We will donate the afghans to the local Commission on Aging seniors just in time for the holidays.   If you have any yarn you would like to donate to the group, please bring it along!

Advocate.
You can make change happen with your voice. United Way needs people who are passionate about education, income and health to make some noise.
Volunteer.

The Family Day of Caring will take place on Saturday, November 13th from 9am until 12pm at the First Presbyterian Church.  A light breakfast will be served at 9:00 am, followed by a service project benefitting Safe Harbor, a seasonal overnight shelter for homeless persons.    Families of all ages are urged to come.  The service project will be geared appropriately so all ages can participate.  The United Way believes that volunteering during childhood builds a strong foundation for continued community service as an adult.
