State & Federal Campaigns

There are thousands of state and federal employees in the five-county area. This fall each of them will be given the opportunity to give to the community need by having a portion of their pay withheld and given to the United Way.

If you are a state or federal employee please consider giving through the United Way. If you know a government worker please encourage them to consider a gift.
We'll make you famous!

If you volunteer for a nonprofit agency we would like to take a picture of you and use it in our upcoming campaign to appear in the Traverse City Record Eagle and surrounding newspapers.

Photos will be taken on August 25 from 11am to 3pm and Thursday August 26 from 10am to 2pm.  Your individual photo shoot will take about 15 minutes and we will give you a black Live United t-shirt to wear (and keep) for the photo.

Please contact Michelle Gallagher for more details and to sign up, 231-947-3200 x 201.

2009 Annual Report

The United Way's annual report will again be published as a supplement to the Record Eagle in the coming weeks. To cover the cost of publishing the report the Record-Eagle will be selling ads in the supplement. This is one way to let over 34,000 households know that you, your company and employees support the community by giving through the United Way.

If you are interested in advertising contact either Steve Wade at United Way or Dan Roach at the Record Eagle, 231-933-1439.  A copy of last year's report is available on our website.

New for 2010! United Way is partnering with Faith Reformed Church for our first Youth and Family Day of Caring.  Their volunteers are always open to exploring new ideas or partnerships with other individuals and/or groups who are looking to improve the welfare of the people who live in and around the Grand Traverse area. For more information contact Karin Stevens, Director of Children's Ministries and Volunteer Development, or Amanda Hilt, Volunteer Center Coordinator, United Way of Northwest Michigan.

This year we have teamed up with The Grand Vision, which is a transparent process led by citizens who are willing to make things happen.  It's built upon a basic belief that the citizens of the region can make decisions today to create the region of tomorrow.  We are so pleased to join forces to promote our shared vision of citizen action through volunteerism, by volunteering with the Day of Caring you are implementing The Grand Vision.

If you have questions regarding any of the Day of Caring events or projects, please contact Susan McQuaid 231-947-3200 x 205.

Summer Intern

Through the Community Foundation's Nonprofit Internship Program we were able to hire Elise Tarsa as a summer intern. During her time at the United Way Elise has helped on a variety of projects including the September 9th Day of Caring. Elise has been a great asset to us and the community.
Volunteer Roundtables

The Volunteer Center will be holding Volunteer Roundtable discussions on a quarterly basis following the county collaborative meetings. The goal of these discussions is to build a stronger relationship with the nonprofits we serve in all counties and better provide them with volunteers.  We also hope to provide knowledge on topics they struggle with, such as volunteer management and recruitment, how to thank volunteers and information on volunteer management software.

If you are interested in joining the roundtable discussion in your county please contact the Volunteer Center Coordinator, Amanda Hilt, 231-947-3200 x 206.

Over the last 28 years the employees at UPS have given over $1 billion to United Way's worldwide.  Locally, they have given over $100,000 over the last five years and they have a 90%  participation rate. In addition to that, each fall they hold a golf outing to help raise funds that are used in our five county area.  Thank you!
