Volunteer Night with the Beach Bums

Because you all are such great volunteers we would like to invite you a Beach Bums game on Wednesday, June 23rd.

The game will be dedicated to celebrating volunteerism, the time and effort you give and the difference you make in the lives of people you serve.

United Way is offering you tickets at a reduced rate - they are just $5 for a seat back chair.  You are welcome to buy tickets for your entire family, bring everyone along to enjoy in the fun.  To make the deal even sweeter you can also purchase a food voucher for a hot dog and a bag of chips for only $2.50!

To reserve tickets at these prices please email Amanda Hilt  or stop into the office before Monday, May 17th.  The tickets need to be pre-paid by this date.  We hope all of you can make it; we can't wait to celebrate with you.
Great Idea!

Ritsema Associates of Traverse City has found a unique way to use the United Way to help the community. They are paying an employee to volunteer while he recovers from a workplace injury. The advantage to the employee is he gets paid. The advantage to the company is they keep the employee engaged and happy. The advantage to the community is we get a productive, eager and useful helper. A win - win - win!
Our Interns

United Way of Northwest Michigan has been fortunate to have two new volunteers helping us. This spring Kevin McClatchey, a MSU alum, joined our team as a volunteer Project Coordinator. He has helped us with organizing and analyzing past grant awards, developing fund raising strategies and creating a special project we hope to announce this summer.

Through a scholarship given by the Community Foundation Endowment Fund we are able to hire Elise Tarsa to work with us through the summer. Elise is a rising senior at St Mary's High School in Leelanau County. She will be working on a variety of projects including this September's Day of Caring.
2010 CAT
$223,000 in Grants Awarded.

Last month the Board of Directors announced $223,000 in grants to area programs addressing critical human service needs. After two long days of interviews and deliberation the Citizen Action Team (CAT) recommended that 24 agencies should receive funding.  For a list of those agencies please visit our website.

Here are some basic facts about the grant award process:

  • Thirty agencies were interviewed by our all volunteer Citizen Action Team (CAT).
  • The CAT had 15 members representing all 5 counties.
  • When combined the agencies applying requested $606,000.
  • The team had $223,000 to invest. A mere 37% of the total requested.
  • 24 programs received funding.
  • There is an even distribution throughout our 5 county area.
    • Antrim - 16 programs
    • Benzie - 13 programs
    • Grand Traverse - 16 programs
    • Kalkaska - 14 programs
    • Leelanau - 16 programs

Youth Grants - Applications for youth grants are due this Friday, May 14. If you plan to apply you will need to contact Michelle Gallagher to obtain a username and password. The Youth CAT will award nearly $100,000 when it meets on June 7 & 8. Award letters will be mailed later that week.

Fall Grant Cycle - United Way has added a third grant cycle. This fall we will accept applications for both Critical Human Service and Youth grants. This cycle is intended to provide funding for programs that did not apply in the spring. Details will be announced in the coming months.
Volunteers Are Springing Up All Over

39th Annual RSVP Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
United Way Logo
The spring theme and flower filled room were perfect for a day of recognition and thanks.  Portraits were taken under the flower arbor, old friendships renewed and new ones blossomed.

Our special thanks to our Silver Sponsor, Reynolds, Jonkhoff Funeral Home;  our Premiere table sponsors, the Nursing Facility Transition Program offered by Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Michigan, Disability Network of Northwest Michigan, and Northern Health Care Management, and our Table sponsor, Women's Resource Center for the Grand Traverse Area and Maritime Heritage Alliance and last but not least our partner NorthSky Nonprofit Network.

The recognition luncheon is only one day set aside to say thank you.  Through RSVP our volunteers are an extremely important and invaluable piece of our success and the health of our communities all year long!

One Day Without Shoes

Our toes were cold but spirits ran high during the "Barefoot Walk" on April 8th
Barefoot
Earlier in the week temperatures were in the 80's but by the time we started our walk the temperature fell to the 30's with rain, turning to snow. Throughout the week we collected over 300 pairs of shoes that were then donated to Goodwill and Father Fred Foundation.

It was cold, it hurt a bit, and it was uncomfortable, but isn't that the point? Every day there are people who don't have the choice of whether or not to put on a pair of shoes. So about 20 brave "soles" took off their shoes and walked through the streets of downtown Traverse City to raise awareness for those who don't have shoes.

For more photos of our walk visit our Flickr page.  Watch the short video of our walk here.
Giving Back... NWMI Style
"Giving Back...NWMI Style" is a monthly show that was designed to profile nonprofit agencies and the volunteers who serve them.

The May edition of the show looks at the Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails (TART Trails), their work bees coming up, the Commuter Cup Challenge, Tour to Tart and lots of information on these activities and how you can get involved.

The Watershed Center, G. T. Conservation Center, and the Inland Seas Education Association have an exciting new video project partnering with the Land Information Access Association (LIAA) and their "Listening to the River" Program.  The show tells you more.

Susan Kuschell from the G. T. Area Children's Garden brings information about the upcoming plant sale on May 15 at the Traverse Area District Library.

Maxine Meach gives an overview of the Parkinson's Support Group who will celebrate 25 years helping patients and families deal with this disease and information on the upcoming summer forum.

Last but not least, Steven Wade, Executive Director of  United Way brings us the good news!   The Citizen Action Team (CAT) has made the hard decisions and he will announce the grants that will be given to area nonprofits.

The show airs every Sunday and Monday night at 7:00 and Friday mornings at 9:00 am.  Additionally, the show can be viewed online.
