Weighing In
on Weight Loss at Work

Looking to lose weight in 2012? Weight loss is probably one of the most common goals people make, and one that is difficult to achieve alone.

A weight loss coach could be just the ticket to reclaiming a fitter you. A recent study, which you can read here, in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that a weight loss program delivered by health coaches over the phone with website and email support was as effective as one delivered in person.

An American Council on Exercise-commissioned study found that people whose work is largely conducted while sitting behind a desk, such as secretaries, lawyers and teachers, get little physical activity during the day.

A 2011 study published in the journal 'PloS ONE' showed that a sizable portion of the national weight gain can be explained by declining physical activity during the workday.
.
The findings also put pressure on employers to step up workplace health initiatives and pay more attention to physical activity at work and offer employees programs geared toward weight loss and improving overall health.

If you are considering workplace wellness initiatives, Visiting Nurse Association of Southeast Michigan can help your organization set up a program to meet your needs from biometric screenings to health risk assessments.

Earn Rewards for Exercising

Sometimes we could all use a little extra motivation to exercise. Through a new website called Earndit.com, you earn points that you can redeem toward gift certificates, just for exercising. And, it's free!

The website is based on the principle of hyperbolic discounting which means that humans discount the value of a reward if it occurs too far into the future. While you'd think that the allures of better health and a leaner body would be enough to kick us into action, the reality of the matter is that they do not. Hyperbolic discounting is the reason why better health and a leaner body down the road are not compelling enough to make us exercise today.

The system relies on GPS devices like Garmin and Fitbit to truthfully record your exercise data. You can compete against others in the Earndit community and participate in challenges for extra motivation.
