November is
National Diabetes Month

Diabetes is a serious disease. If it isn't managed, it can damage many parts of the body, leading to heart attacks, strokes, amputation, blindness, kidney failure and nerve damage. Consider this:

  • Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes.
  • Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined.
  • Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes.

But there is good news: diabetes complications can be prevented or delayed by properly managing blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Eating healthy, being physically active and quitting smoking also can help lower the risk of diabetes complications.

Visit the American Diabetes Association website to learn more about diagnosis, prevention and healthy recipes.

2 Tips for Motivation and Team Building During the Holidays
  • Bring in a Thanksgiving luncheon--complete with turkey and all the traditional side dishes--for all company members. Local grocery stores are a great source for reasonably-priced Thanksgiving dinners.

  • Hold a food drive for the needy during both November and December.

It's not too late to schedule a flu clinic at your worksite. Keep influenza germs away from your workplace by washing your hands often, coughing and sneezing into your elbow and calling the VNA Flu-Busters.

10 Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating

Did you know that during the holidays, it is possible to gain 7 to 10 pounds? Eating healthy during the November and December holidays is possible despite the endless opportunities that tempt our taste buds.

    1. You can still have your favorite foods, but keep portion sizes small.
    2. Be mindful of what you are eating. Ask yourself if you really want the item.
    3. Bring a healthy dish to a potluck.
    4. Practice your Push-Away skills--be prepared to say "No Thank You".
    5. Eat until you are satisfied but not stuffed.
    6. Opt for low calorie drinks and save your calories for food.
    7. Fill up on raw vegetables, but avoid calorie-rich dips and dressings.
    8. Prepare for a high calorie day by eating leaner, lighter calorie meals a few days before.
    9. Track your calories. Studies show that writing down calories you eat make you more aware of how close you are to your daily limit.
    10. Follow the "three bite rule"--after the third bite, our taste buds don't register flavor as intensely. So, unless it is truly incredible, move on to the next item.
What Will Your Work Place Wellness Resolution Be?

As you are planning budget and department goals for 2012, be sure to include an element of Work Place Wellness. A good worksite wellness program can pay for itself with productivity and employee satisfaction.

If you don't have a program, start small by forming a committee or tackling a particular health issue like weight loss.

For those with an existing program, look for ways to add a new element to the program.
