VNA Launches Corporate Volunteer Program
VNA is creating an exciting new corporate volunteer program to help our hospice patients in need.
While details are still forming, VNA needs an army of support with one-day special projects such as Kamp Kids Matter bereavement camp for children. Many of our patients also need help with a fall house clean up, inside and out.

The Cost of High Blood Pressure High blood pressure (HBP), also known as hypertension, is one of the most common diagnoses in the United States with 1 in 3 adults affected. Many people are unaware that they suffer from it, and often find out once the condition has reached a severe and costly level for both the employee and the employer. Cost for Employees Undetected HBP can cause serious health complications such as heart attacks and strokes and can also lead to trouble with memory, brain aneurysms, heart failure and impotence.
Cost for Employers HBP is one of the 10 most expensive health conditions in the United States. Individuals with HBP cost a company on average $392 per year. How to Decreases Costs Early detection through screenings can significantly reduce the high costs of HBP. Screenings are simple and painless. Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider.
If you have HBP, you can control it with medication and lifestyle changes. The following activities help to lower blood pressure:
- Eating healthy food: fruits, vegetables, whole grain and low-fat dairy
- Decreasing salt intake
- Increase physical activity
- Not smoking
- Limiting alcohol consumption
- Managing stress

A tan is unhealthy whether you get one from a day at the beach, at a tanning salon or through incidental exposure. Tans are caused by harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning lamps that create cell damage. As a result, your skin can age prematurely with wrinkles, slackness, brown spots and cancer.
What is tanning? Tanning is the skin's reaction to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When skin is exposed to UV rays, it produces the brown pigment melanin, which darkens the cells of the outer layer of the skin. This darkening of the cells is the skin's natural defense against further damage from UV radiation.
Is getting sunburned more dangerous than getting tanned? No, both are equally dangerous, because both result from damage to the skin cells. Regardless of your skin tone, ethnic or racial background, sun damage affects everyone. Protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun with these tips:
- Seek the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Be careful not to get a sunburn.
- Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.
- Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day.
- Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours.
- Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
Skin analyzers like the Dermascan machine can be used to identify sun damage. Through the use of non-invasive black lights, this tool offers an opportunity for individuals to view potential problem areas and share information with their physician for follow up treatment. |
