Vaccinations Are a
Life-Long Lifeline
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, not enough adults are getting all the shots they need to prevent serious diseases.
Whether you are an adult, traveler or adolescent going back to school, entering college or a new parent welcoming a baby home, you are strongly encouraged to review your immunization record. Older vaccines may require a booster shot such as tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis). Other vaccines, such as influenza are needed annually. Check with your health care provider to see if you are due for any vaccinations. Did you know VNA offers more than 10 immunizations to keep you and your loved ones healthy? |

Your Prevention Investment
Investing your health care dollars wisely can pay off big for employers and employees. Preventive services and other health-promoting workplace policies and programs represent an investment that pays health dividends both now and in the future. Preventing the onset of diseases is a quick way to reduce short- and mid-term costs. Chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure incur direct health care expenditures as well as the indirect costs of absenteeism and reduced on-the-job effectiveness.
Investing in wellness services that detect and manage an employee's chronic condition also reduces the risk of incurring mid- and long-term costs. For example, managing chronic conditions can prevent physician visits or hospitalizations and lower long-term costs such as employee turnover and replacement. Read more about the power of wellness in Partnership for Prevention's Why Invest? Recommendations for Improving Your Health Care Investment. Partnership for Prevention is a membership organization of businesses, nonprofit organizations and government agencies that advances policies and practices to prevent disease and improve the health of all Americans.

Refining the Sweet Side of Diabetes Prevention The American Diabetes Association (ADA) estimates that $26.9 billion dollars in productivity is lost due to the worst possible result of diabetespremature death. Diabetes results from the body's failure to either produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is necessary for body cells to convert sugars and other food into energy. According to the ADA 23.6 million Americans are currently living with this chronic condition. Many companies are responding by promoting diabetes awareness and providing more opportunities for employees to live healthy and active lifestyles with worksite walking programs, healthier food options and corporate wellness screenings.
Glucose screenings are one of the easiest ways to become informed about your risk for diabetes. Glucose screenings can instantly measure blood sugar levels which may signal the need for further testing, diagnosis and proper treatment. Flu Can Wreak Havoc in the Workplace When the flu bug bites, it can cost the U.S. economy as much as $167 billion a year in health care costs and lost productivity.
A flu-stricken employee who comes in to work not only fails to perform up to par but also may spread the virus to colleagues. Making matters worse, an employee may even be contagious a day before developing symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that between 10% and 20% of people become ill with the flu each year. When germs are spread within the workforce, the number of flu incidences can rise and the durations may become longer. Employers Be Prepared
- Schedule an onsite flu clinic for employees and dependents.
- Promote vaccination efforts by informing employees about the health and economic benefit of being vaccinated against the flu.
- Create a work environment where ill employees feel secure in taking several days off to recover from the flu rather than being present at work but not productive or, worse yet, passing along the virus to coworkers.
The VNA Flu-Busters are experts at helping your employees receive convenient, onsite flu vaccinations. Scheduling a flu clinic is easy, simply sign up online or call (800) 882-5710, ext. 8755, for more information.
