Sharon Leighton Consultancy September 2012 |
Greetings!
The schools are back, the tress are turning colour, autumn is here and the days are shorter so I know it's time for the DIA European Medical Information & Communciations conference, as part of the Clinical Forum. This year we will be in the Hague, from 8-10th October.
Hopefully I will see many of you there. If you can't make it, I aim to blog on 3 talks that I think you'd like.
I'm presenting some of the Global MI survey results that I'm working on with Janet Davies. The emphasis is on Asia Pacific and Latin America so more emerging markets than Globalisation. We're saving that for the DIA US 2013 meeting! As I write, the presentation is only 10% done so I better get creative with those slides! But if you can't make it, you can download a free white paper I write with Matthias Heyn from SDL on balancing the demands of global consistency with local multilingual challenges & solutions. And we're holding a free webinar on 25th October 17.00 CET, 16.00 11.00 EST - register here. Have fun!

ONE VOICE FOR MEDICAL INFORMATION
Can Medical Information in pharma truly speak with "One Voice"? Do standard responses ensure consistency if they are only available in English?
Earlier in the year, I was delighted to work with Matthias Heyn from SDL on developing this white paper on multilingual challenges & solutions. Based on the round table we held alongside the DIA Euromeeting earlier this year, as well as a case study from a large global pharma company.

EU PV legislation - a personal view
Well, if you took this lot of pills you would be a living AE not just reporting them.
On a more serious note, here's my thoughts in my blog about the EU Pharmacovigilance legislation that became legal in July. Note that the Good PV Practice modules are slowly being released.

Did you miss the new ABPI code of practice for 2012 (2nd edition) Actually it's green-turquiose not purple. Another booklet to add to the MUST READ pile on your desk. Updated to come into line with the changes to EFPIA & IFPMA codes, EU PV legislation and the transit of the planet Venus. No, I lied about the last one - just wanted to know if you were still awake & reading! Get your download & further information click here

Fascinating stats on user demographics for social media in US. It's not teenagers/Gen Y at all, more like Baby Boomers for some. Do you know how old the average Twitter or Facebook user is? Do you know what share of Reddit's users are women? And yesterday active Facebook users went over 1 billion. So you can no longer ignore it!

Navigating Around Large Documents With Ease
Using styles in Word docs helps with consistency but also navigation. TIp = use Document Maps When you are working with large documents in Microsoft Word, it can sometimes be hard to keep track of where you are. |

DIA: Drug Information Journal
Got excited when DIA improved their journal search capability. You can find articles easier but it still fails at downloading. User error a possibility but it's still not intuitive. Think I need to spend some time at the DIA stand in The Hague!

Medical Education Matters. Apprenticeship: a socio-cultural view
Communities of Practice. I love the newcomers & oldtimers concept. This is a great blog post on developing communities of practice.
"My starting point, when thinking about apprenticeship, is to turn to Lave and Wenger, who set out to 'rescue the idea of apprenticeship'."

Who am I?
After leaving corporate life 5 years ago, I set up my own Medical Affairs consultancy and training business, believing that there wasn't much demand for either service. Luckily, I proved myself wrong and now have a long client list from many large and small pharmaceutical companies. I'm passionate about my business, Medical Information, social media, information to patients and all things geek.
I help busy managers succeed in their goals by
- managing projects
- training their staff on MI practice and leadership
- mentoring managers new to Medical Information or Medical Affairs
- helping them restructure their business
And now we build tools to monitor your customer's perceptions of your service. You name it, I can probably do it.
