Hamilton Elementary School Honored

Rob Rogers

MARIN INDEPENDENT JOURNAL:

02/18/2010 05:31:48 PM PST

Novato's Hamilton Elementary School has won recognition as one of the state's top schools for helping low-income students close the "achievement gap."

The school is one of 238 statewide - and the only school in Marin County - to receive the 2009-10 Title I Achievement Award from the state Department of Education.

The award is presented to schools receiving federal assistance in which all students make significant progress toward proficiency in California's academic content standards, and in which socioeconomically disadvantaged students have doubled the achievement targets set for them for two consecutive years.

"For the last two years, we've been able to consistently show our subgroups increasing in their proficiency in language arts and mathematics, as well as fifth-grade science," said Principal Ruthanne Bexton, noting that about 58 percent of the school's 615 students are below the poverty line, and more than 40 percent are English-language learners. "Our teachers are so willing to support these programs, because they want the children to become proficient."

Hamilton has made this progress despite the Novato Unified School District's loss of millions of dollars in the last two years as a result of state cuts to education. Teachers help each student set goals in math or language arts and work with them throughout the year to meet those goals, assisting students before, during and after school.

"It's really remarkable that they've still been able to do intervention classes for the kids," said Novato Superintendent of Schools Jan LaTorre-Derby. "Hamilton does individual goal setting, so that kids know when they've met their individual goals and can keep pushing themselves forward. It's an amazing program."

Hamilton and the state's other award-winning schools will be honored at an April 21 reception and banquet at the Disneyland Hotel.

"These award recipients prove that with hard work and high expectations, students can overcome challenges and achieve academic success," said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell. "By working together, administrators, teachers, staff, students and parents have raised student achievement and narrowed the achievement gap."

Walk and Roll to School March 3

Our next official Walk and Roll to School Day is Wednesday, March 3. I'm hoping for a break in the rain so we can all get out of our cars, get outside and walk or bike to school. The pencils were a big hit last month so we'll again pass out pencils and recognition stickers to everyone who participates. It's fun!  It's healthy!  There's less pollution and less traffic.  Next month, we'll be walking and rolling on Wednesday, April 7.  Any questions or to volunteer at our welcome table on Wednesday morning, please contact Debbie Lynch at DebbieL2@yahoo.com or 382-7810.

Thanks!

Debbie

Math & Science Programs at the Libarary

The Novato Library will host a four-part series of two-hour, afterschool math and science programs: Make It! Move It! Eat It: An Introduction to Everyday Science to middle school students and teens in March.

The programs will be lead by Engineer and Scientist, Linh Nguyen and by Jack Deslippe, Advanced Graduate Researcher at University of California, Berkeley, Department of Physics.

North Bay Leadership Council President and CEO Cynthia Murray applauds the library's program. "By exposing students to the wonders of math and science, the Novato Library is opening new doors for them to explore which should lead to more students continuing to pursue math and science careers," she said.

Librarian Amanda Foust developed the programs based on the North Bay Leadership Council's (NBLC) spring economic insight report, "How to Make the North Bay a Jobs Magnet," which highlighted the strong need for visible math and science programs for youth in grades K-12. The Council's interest in math and science programs for youth stems from the fact that Novato has recently seen a clustering of the biotech and digital arts businesses, which guarantees future job growth, along with a push to attract a higher-paid scientific workforce.

Each program at the Novato Library will focus on a particular theme and include both demonstrations and hands-on science experiments. At the conclusion of each program, the scientists will use food as a final demonstration, which will then be distributed amongst the participants.

The program schedule is:

Tuesday, March 2, 3:30-5:30: Motors

Tuesday, March 9, 3:30-5:30: Magnets

Tuesday, March 16, 3:30-5:30: Optics

Tuesday, March 23, 3:30-5:30: Waves

The Novato Library is located at 1720 Novato Blvd.  Please contact the Novato Library Reference Desk to sign-up at (415) 897-1142. Sign-ups are required.

Funding for the program is provided by a federal grant funded by the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Grant administered by the California State Library.
