Halloween Safety Tips

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

From the Marin County Schools/Law Enforcement Partnership

BEFORE HALLOWEEN

* Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.

* Add reflective tape/striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility * Secure emergency identification discretely within Halloween attire or on a bracelet.

* Because a mask can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic and hypoallergenic makeup or a decorative hat as a safe alternative

* When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories, purchase only those with a label indicating they are flame resistant

* Think twice before using simulated knives, guns or swords. If such props must be used, be certain they do not appear authentic and are soft and flexible to prevent injury

* Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries, powered lanterns or chemicallightsticks in place of candles in decorations and costumes

* This is also a great time to buy fresh batteries for your home smoke alarms

* Teach children phone numbers and how to call 9-1-1. If they have an emergency or become lost they can dial 9-1-1 from any phone

* Openly discuss appropriate and inappropriate behavior at Halloween time

* Consider purchasing individually packaged healthy food alternatives (or sale non-food treats) for those who visit your home

* Take extra effort to eliminate tripping hazards on your porch and walkway. Check around your property for flower pots, low tree limbs, support wires or garden hoses that may prove hazardous to young children rushing from house to house

* Learn or review CPR skills to aid someone who is choking

* Consider safe party guidelines when hosting an adult or office party BEFORE NIGHTFALL ON HALLOWEEN

* A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats

* Consider fire safety when decorating. Do not overload electrical outlets with holiday lights/decorations, and do not block exit doors

* While children can help with the fun of designing a Jack 0' Lantern, leave the carving to adults * Always keep Jack 0' Lanterns and hot electric lamps far away from drapes, decorations, flammable materials or areas where children and pets will be standing or walking

* Plan and review with your children the route and behavior which is acceptable to you * Do not permit children to bicycle, roller-blade or skateboard

* Agree on a specific time when revelers must return home

* Along with flashlights for all, older children and escorts should wear a wristwatch and carry coins for non-emergency phone calls

* Confine, segregate or otherwise prepare household pets for an evening of frightful sights and sounds. Be sure that all dogs and cats are wearing collars and proper identification tags. Consult  your veterinarian for further advice (continued on back page)

* Remind all household drivers to remain cautious and drive slowly throughout the community

WHEN TRICK-OR- TREATING

* A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds

* Remind Trick-or- Treaters:

- By using a flashlight, they can see and be seen by others

- Stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate where you are going

- Only trick-or-treat in well known neighborhoods at homes that have a

porch light on

- If no sidewalk is available, walk at the farthest edge of the roadway facing traffic

- Never cut across yards or use alleys

- Never enter a stranger's home or car for a treat

- Obey all traffic and pedestrian regulations. Always walk. Never run

across a street

- Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks

Remove any mask or item that will limit eyesight before crossing a street or driveway

- Don't assume the right of way, motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-or- Treaters

- Never consumed unwrapped food items or open beverages that may be offered

- No treats are to be eaten until they are thoroughly checked by an adult at home

- Law enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity

AFTER TRICK-OR- TREATING

* Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throwaway any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.

* Try to apportion treats for the days following Halloween

* Make Sure items that can cause choking (such as hard candies), are given only to those of an appropriate age

The safety and well being of our students, families and community is a priority of the Marin County School/Law enforcement Partnership. HAVE FUN AND BE SAFE!

Spiritwear Ordering

The last Spirit Wear sale for this school year begins October 30 and is ONE WEEK ONLY.   Look in your Friday folder for the flier.  Please turn your order slips and money in to the office by November 6.  We will have samples on display in front of the school throughout the week and encourage you to check them out.  After checking the samples, if you are still in doubt about what size to get, the company suggests ordering a size larger.  There are no exchanges or refunds.
Unicef

All Hamilton students will receive UNICEF boxes on Friday. The students will be collecting change as they Trick-or-Treat on Halloween. The boxes need to be returned to school on Monday. We will send out another message toward the end of the week to let the students know how much Hamilton was able to collect for UNICEF.
Flu Shot Clinic
San Jose Middle School has scheduled a flu shot clinic with Flu Busters for the afternoon of Wednesday, November 18th. This is the group that was endorsed at the last North Marin Council meeting and recommended by the Superintendent. We have just started promoting this to our parent group.

We wanted to let you know that Hamilton School families are also invited to sign up and get flu shots. If you aren't doing a flu shot clinic of your own, please feel free to send your families to San Jose. We'll be happy to include them. The clinic is scheduled after school is out for the day from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $25 for a flu shot or $30 for the nasal mist. Families can either register online with Flu Busters or call a toll free number to sign up.

Flu Busters is attempting to get the H1N1 vaccine to include it in the clinic. They are having regular conference calls with the CDC and trying to become an official distribution point for the vaccine. If they have the H1N1 vaccine, it will be administered at the same time at no extra charge. Flu Busters does not guarantee they will be able to get a hold of the vaccine, however. I'm sure this is no surprise to you with all of the press coverage there has been about the H1N1 vaccine distribution falling behind schedule.

This is not a fund raiser for our PTA. I understand one dollar from each registration goes to the National PTA, however. We are doing this as a service to the community and hope that your families will also benefit from it.
Walk and Roll to School
WALK AND ROLL TO SCHOOL DAY
Wednesday, Nov 4

Last month's International Walk and Roll to School day was a big success.  We had over 200 students participate.  What a healthy way to start the day!  To encourage our students to keep on walking and rolling, we will be holding a monthly Walk and Roll to School day on the first Wednesday of the month.  Please mark your calendar and join us on Wednesday, Nov. 4.  We'll be passing out recognition stickers and bookmarks donated by Safe Routes to School. It's fun!  It's healthy!  There's less pollution and less traffic.  Any questions or to volunteer (we need help at the school entrances), please contact Debbie Lynch at DebbieL2@yahoo.com or 382-7810.
