| Red Ribbon Week starts October 26 |
Red Ribbon Week- October 26th through 30th
Monday marks the beginning of our Red Ribbon celebration at Hamilton. The week is dedicated to raising awareness of our children regarding the importance of making safe and healthy lifestyle choices. Grade levels will be participating in various lessons regarding healthy food, saying no to drugs, exercise, and conflict resolution. The story below is from Californians for Drug Free Youth and explains the history of the Red Ribbon celebration.
In Honor of a Life - Enrique Camarena
Many lives have been lost due to the violence of people anesthetized by illegal drugs. Young people in some neighborhoods who witness and experience violence have begun to think of it as normal. Tobacco, alcohol and other drugs wreak violence on our health.
In 1985, a group of concerned people rallied together. These young people, parents, community leaders and elders rallied on behalf ofthe health and safety of each of us in honor of a fallen son, brother, husband, father and friend. Enrique Camarena was a Drug Enforcement Administration special agent. He was killed at the hands of drug traffickers. Enrique's death was not the first or the last. It simply became a catalyst for action. His sacrifice of life has become a symbol of the sacrifice of families who have lost loved ones through the violence that accompanies addiction and drug use.
Enrique's sacrifice of life propelled many people to stand together for a few days each year and send a unified message across the nation. We stand for peace. We stand for each other. We stand for our right to health and safety. We stand for the hopes and dreams of each of us. We stand for action.
We wear red in honor of the life sacrificed in service for others. We wear red as a stop sign, to stop the violence of drug use. We wear read to attract attention, to focus our attention on a common cause. We wear red as a promise to maintain our own commitment to a healthy lifestyle for our familie ourselves. We wear red to say thank you, in memory of life.
Hamilton Students will receive a Red Ribbon bracelet to wear all week and Wednesday will be "WEAR RED" day for all students and staff!
Ask you child to tell you about some of the healthy lifestyle choices they are making! |

| Important Information Abount the Flu |
IMPORTANT FLU INFORMATION
What is the flu?
The flu (influenza) is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs caused by influenza viruses. Flu viruses cause illness, hospital stays and deaths in the United States each year. There are many difference flu viruses and sometimes a new flu virus emerges.
What is novel H1Nl flu?
Novel H1N1 flu is a new and very differenct influenza virus that is spreading worldwide among people. This new virus was called "swine flu" at first because it has pieces of flu viruses found in pigs in the past. However, novel H1N1 virus has not been detected in U.S. pigs.
Influenza is unpredictable, but scientists believe that the new H1N1 virus will cause illness, hospital stays and deaths over the coming months. This flu season, the new virus may cause more people to get sick than during a regular flu season. It also may cause more hospital stays and deaths than seasonal flu.
How serious is the flu?
The flu can be very serious, especially for younger children and children of any age who have one or more chronic medical conditions. These conditions include asthma or other lung problems, diabetes, weakened immune systems, kidney disease, heart problems and neurological and neuromuscular disorders. These conditions can result in more severe illness from influenza and the new H1N1 virus.
How does flu spread?
Both novel H1N1 flu and seasonal flu are thought to spread mostly from person to person through the coughs and sneezes of people who are sick with influenza. People also may get sick by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
What are the symptoms of the flu?
Symptoms of seasonal flu and novel H1N1 flu include fever cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people also may have vomiting and diarrhea.
How long can a person spread the flu to others? People infected with seasonal and novel H1N1 flu shed virus and may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick to 5 to 7 days after. This can be longer. Especially for children and people with weakened immune systems and in people infected with novel H1N1 flu. | |
