I cannot believe it is really May already!  April was so crazy between working on our website and the endless number of events and we were unable to get our April newsletter out.  We are very excited about all of the amazing things that are coming up this year.  Our affiliation is growing by the week, we added three new green businesses just this week!  We are hoping to be able to start sharing the stories of these fantastic new eco-friendly products and services located right here in Charleston.  We are looking for contributors to our green newsletter, so if you have a great story to tell or some enlightening information to share, please contact us on our website and we will try and include as much as we can!  This month we have some great tips for ways kids can help out the planet and Mom and Dad!  Look for tips on earning some green, by going green from Josh Silverman.  And find out ways going green is helping Charleston.  As always look for upcoming seminars and events and find out how you can  improve your home, your health and just feel good by "going green".  Thanks and enjoy!

Is Green Better for the Lowcountry?
bridge green Is Green Better for the Lowcountry?

Charleston has always been a very ecologically responsible town.  We care about our marine life and our beautiful, historic city.  What difference has this green movement made on our town?  It's exciting to watch people's faces as the lightbulb goes on, (no pun intended), and they realize the ways they can make their lives healthier and more sensible so easily.

On an individual level, using all natural cleaning products can make our homes a healthier place for our children.  But how about the schools that our children attend for six or more hours every day?  Our children who are sitting at their desks that are cleaned with bleach every single day.  What kind of impact will it make to have our schools, both public and private - change to a healthier product that has the same effectiveness as bleach?

Green is definitely catching on in Charleston.  From the Green Derby Party in North Charleston to The Charleston Battery's Green Day game last week-end, lots of group are getting in the swing of the green initiative.  With all the waste that is created at events isn't it better to attend a fun party that is taking care of the trash it creates?  We still have a long way to go and the greening of these events is not always what it needs to be, but progress is always a wonderful thing!

As adults we are learning about positive changes we can do to help our environment, both at home and in the world.  Even more exciting is that our kids are already way ahead of us.  Local FREE programs like LEEP and Lowcountry Earthforce are offering kids the opportunity to learn how to make these changes now.  Earthforce goes into the classroom and works directly with teachers to allow the kids to create their own ideas on how they can make Charleston a more pleasant place to live.  Teachers not only encourage their ideas, but help to implement their plans and show our kids that they can make a difference too.  There is still some controversy surrounding the green initiative, but at the end of the day if it improves our lives and our City; isn't that all that really matters?

Go Green, Make Green
by Josh Silverman

More than a trend, socially responsible investing aligns your principles with your portfolio.  Big oil, out; small environmental, in-simple, right?  However, like all investing, there is more behind how to make green while going green.  Here are three key strategies to get you started on the road to socially responsible success.

1.  Investigate your investments.

While the desire to invest in green technologies and socially responsible companies is a noble one, you need to accurately assess performance, profitability, and risk as well as social perspective. What you see may not be what you get, especially as the green bandwagon has artificially inflated values. Do your research, diversify, and invest with your head as well as your heart.

2.  Know what you own.

Savvy investors should consider issues like tax consequences and the balance of industries in their portfolios before they sell, and examine what they own closely before making any hasty judgments.  You may already have companies or funds that at first blush seem compatible, but rely on your research to uncover those socially responsible management practices that will fit your profile.

3.  Explore beyond the basics.

While stocks, bonds, and funds are typically the first place investors look for responsible choices, consider branching out into alternative assets including commodities and currencies.  What about investing in sustainable real estate ventures?  Or the Nobel prize-winning concept of micro-lending, which channels investment dollars to small businesses?  Keep an open mind to benefit your bottom line.

Putting your money where your mind is not only feels good for your conscience and your wallet; it can affect social change, improve the local business community, and develop a better environment for us all-no small reward for taking the time to make your investment decisions really matter.

Kids, You Can Be Green Too!

Create a Wildlife Habitat in Your Yard -
For birds: Make a birdbath.  Plant native trees and plants with berries for butterflies: lots of bright flowering plants, they love red, yellow orange pink and purple.  And a place to rest like a flat rock.  Avoid pesticides!  They will kill butterflies and birds need pesticide free bugs for food.

Household Tips -
Turn the water off while you brush your teeth.  Take more showers, baths use up lots more water!  Recycle, recycle recycle!  One aluminum can can power your TV for three hours!  Donate used toys and clothes to Goodwill or Salvation Army.  Shut doors and windows, and turn off lights when you leave a room.  If you are cold indoors, put on a sweater instead of turning up the heat.

Help Our Earth -
Take a bag when you take a walk and pick up any trash you see.  Eat a waste free lunch- take cloth napkins, re-usable containers and real silverware in your lunch box.  Instead of throwing away cans and laundry bottles, use them for your next craft project.  Cut off the top of the laundry bottle, decorate and use it to scoops fido's food.  Use decorated cans to plant seedlings.

Drew and I were privileged to offer an Earth Day presentation at JBE in Mount Pleasant.  We were delighted with the level of interest and involvement of even the youngest children.  Their enthusiasm was contagious and it was one of our most rewarding experiences to date.  The highlight of the event was a skit put on by the kids from Earthforce After School.  The did a show about recycling and they were directed by Stacy Littlefield from Lowcountry    Earthforce.  We also would like to thank Luann Rosenzweig and the other volunteers for working with the kids on the skit.  It was really so much fun and we look forward to doing it again!
