For Chronic Pain Sufferers and The Clinicians Who Treat Them Skillfully Aware: Using The Art of Mindfulness in Teaching Patients How To Be Pain Free
Friday, September 18, 2009
9:00 am to 5:30 pm
Patients suffering from the complex combination of pain, chemical dependency and mood disorders face great challenges and can pose great challenges for healthcare providers. Mindfulness as a treatment method is proven effective with these complex problems.
Teaching patients to meditate and develop a daily mindfulness practice provides a framework for their own self-care. Patients can then initiate their own self-directed healing which has the effect of lowering healthcare utilization while at the same time improving outcomes.
This workshop will teach participants how to bring the benefits of meditation into their personal and professional lives. Participants need not be familiar with meditation to begin to understand its benefits and begin teaching basic techniques.
Objectives: · Participants will learn the science that supports meditation as a comprehensive bio-psycho-social treatment method · Participants will understand the Eastern conception of emotions and the process of working with them · Participants will learn how to meditate and utilize a variety of meditation techniques to work through pain, strong urges and emotions · Participants will learn how to develop a daily mindfulness practice and to teach others to do so as well · Participants will be able to use mindfulness in their practices as a means to strengthen other complimentary medical, psychological and physical therapies
