From Common Ground:
Suffering and Happiness in the Buddhist Perspective
with Jim Kenney

buddah
Sunday, May 3, 2009
1:30-3:30 pm
$12

Buddha began his very first sermon by describing the nature of human "dissatisfaction", its origins, its cessation, and the path to that blissful end. What is often ignored is the strong Buddhist message about happiness. We will take up both aspects of human experience as we explore the existential ground of Buddhist thought.

Jim Kenney is the Executive Director of the Interreligious Engagement Project (IEP21), working with global religious communities to address the world's critical problems through cooperative partnerships with government, business, education, media, intergovernmental organizations, and civil society. Currently, he's organizing a major international conference on Globalization for the Common Good, to be held in Chicago in 2009.

Dr. Kenney is also the Executive Director of Common Ground, an adult study center focusing on the world's great religious, philosophical and spiritual traditions and their implications for every dimension of human endeavor and experience. He lectures widely on a variety of subjects relating to politics, religion, history, and culture. He serves as Co-Editor of Interreligious Insight: a Journal of Dialogue and Engagement, published internationally four times each year in the US and the UK by the World Congress of Faiths, the Interreligious Engagement Project, and Common Ground. Jim is former Global Director of the Parliament of the World's Religions (one of the world's major interfaith organizations) and a current trustee of the International Interreligious Peace Council.

Sacred Middle Eastern Dance
A Joyful and Spirit Filled Journey

belly dancer
Sunday, May 17, 2009
4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

$40

In this gathering Sacred Middle Eastern (Belly) Dance is taught with an honoring of the Deep Feminine.  Ms. Passias invites Mindfulness which offers the opportunity to witness one's felt sense experience in the present moment.  The movements generate from within while participants learn the outer dance.  The objective is an experience of common unity through this ancient form of dance.

The workshop will include:

-A Movement Meditation to help stimulate and restore one's center

-A mindful Moving Into the Body that is seen as one's essential resource

-A joyful and spirit filled learning of the dance!

"The movements of Belly Dancing enable a woman to understand and experience a natural rhythm.  In this dance form, she swings her limbs around the center of her body around the navel of the world, through waves and swinging rhythmical movements of the pelvis, through movements older than any single woman, indeed older than human civilization.  The dancer gathers strength for her movements from her belly - the lower part of her body where her balance is centered.  She links her lower belly's center of gravity to the earth on which she dances and embeds it in her belly.  And every single movement, however tiny, longs to return to this center, the navel of the world."
                            - Grandmother's Secrets

Francine Passias witnesses and draws from the many healing properties of this dance and deeply acknowledges the body as a sacred vessel, which carries spirit into the physical world. Her passion and gifts are revealed in the dance as she teaches
the age-old art with humor and love.
