LEARNING TO LET IT FLOW by Denise Dojka, PhD
Recently, I learned an important lesson about letting go and allowing things to flow. I thought I'd offer it here. A close family member died recently, and I was the primary person in charge of making the funeral arrangements. As the mother of young children who were experiencing their first close encounter with death, I felt pressure to make sure that they understood that death was a part of life and not scary, that it was indeed sad that their grandfather would no longer be a part of their lives, and that I needed them to behave at the wake and funeral! I also felt the need to keep the depth of my own mourning in check around them. No pressure! And here's where we tie in to this month's water theme. Picture, if you will, the water level rising, rising, rising, against an earthen dam. And the pressure on the walls of the dam getting stronger and stronger. That's pretty much how I was feeling. And I think that's how many of us feel at times in our lives, that the pressure keeps growing, and somehow we must withstand it and be strong. But suddenly I had an "AHA!" moment! It became clear to me that I had a lot of supportive people in my life, but that I could not feel their love and support if I kept the walls of the dam so strong. I had to find a way to let their love and support in, in order to feel it. How to do that? In part, sometimes that pressure is about the role we see ourselves in: the perfect daughter, mother, wife, worker, etc. We know what the expectations are for that role, and we try to fulfill them. Once we give up the role and its expectations, we can just be ourselves. Being authentic allows you to do what you need to do, while still being able to acknowledge that you might need something too. It puts you on the two-way street of mutuality. Back to our water analogy, it allows water to flow to where it's needed, instead of it flowing in one direction and backing up against the damn. For me, I was able to realize that I needed to feel everyone's support and love more than I needed to have perfectly behaved children. I delegated some tasks, and I unloaded on a loving husband. It helped me weather a very tough week. And every time I received a card in the mail, it felt like another big hug. So when you feel under pressure and the dam's about to burst, consider whether you are trying to live up to role expectations. Is it really necessary? Who put you in this role? Is there another way to do it? What do you need now? What does it take to get it? I invite you to jump into the stream, and see if you can find that place of flow, letting in what you need and as well as giving out what you have to share. |
Summer's Edible Healing Waters: Cucumbers! By Lucia LiCavoli,Ph.D.
Are you as "cool as a cucumber?" Where did that saying come from? Well, reportedly cucumbers have an internal temperature that remains 20 degrees cooler than the temperature outside on a hot day. Historically people living in hot climates such as India, knew to use cucumbers as a natural coolant. Plus they are 96% water by weight, so they naturally quench thirst. Medicinally, they have been used in Oriental Medicine for many centuries as a cooling agent during hot or dry times. Applying grated cucumber or the juice of cucumber directly onto sunburned skin aids healing. Eating the whole cucumber (skin included), or its juice, helps with stomach inflammation and other inflammatory processes such as acne or conjunctivitis. We know from laboratory analysis (www.nutritiondata.com), that the juice of a cucumber (skin included) is rich in potassium (40%), phosphorus (20%), calcium (7%) and choline (7%). Cucumbers are also a wonderful source of vitamins A, C, and K. The skin of the cucumber is rich in silicon and chlorophyll. Additionally, cucumbers aid the digestion of protein, because they contain erepsis, a digestive enzyme. This must be why the Lebanese often include them in pita sandwiches filled with fragrant meats and why we often ate pickles with our sandwiches as children. So this watery little veggie is quite a healer. But I would be careful where you purchase your cucumbers. Personally, we buy organic, but also during the summer months we receive locally grown biodynamic cucumbers in our share of vegetables from Angelic Farms (www.angelicorganics.com). These vegetables are beyond organic and are picked within 48 hours of delivery, so much of the nutrition is retained. Macrobiotic diets (e.g., author Christina Pirello) and Oriental Medicine texts (e.g., author Paul Pitchford), suggest cooking cucumbers into a bisque. Cucumber salad is always simple. Also, one of my clients suggests adding them sliced to a pitcher of water to lend a gentle flavor, a nice change of pace from lemon!

Water Holds Hidden Messages
by Nancy Ging. LCSW In 2001 a book was published in Japan with dazzling photographs which have the potential to help us leap forward in our consciousness. The essential information contained in this book is something we need to know about, share with our children, teach our grandchildren. Japanese scientist Maseru Emoto wrote of his research in The Hidden Messages in Water which has been made available in English in several publications, small and large. (Note: His research may have been replicated by now as it would be easy enough to do). Emoto discovered that crystals formed in frozen water show changes when specific thoughts or sounds are directed toward them. This is more than merely interesting. It is personal. After all, our bodies are 80% water, give or take 10% or so depending on our age. What we think about and what we listen to must, therefore, have a profound impact on that large portion of our body that is water. For those of us "into" vibrational medicine and energy healing, this news of the impact of vibrations in the form of various thoughts, words or music on water is beyond exciting. Emoto found that water from clear springs and water that has been exposed to positive words show brilliant, harmonious, complex and colorful snowflake patterns. The words LOVE and GRATITUDE created the most harmonious, beautiful patterns. However, polluted water or water touched by negative thoughts form incomplete, chaotic patterns with dull colors. In his book you will find many colored pictures of the crystals from water. I was touched by the before and after photographs of lake water in Japan - before and after Buddhist prayer. In another set of pictures the author states that distilled water exposed to microwave heating looked much like water exposed to the word "Satan." Water exposed to cell phones also produced disturbing pictures as well. In whatever form you purchase this book, small paperback or large fancy coffee table version, keep it in plain view in your home so you remember its messages on a daily basis. Your life and health can improve, the impact you have on your environment will be more positive and your respect for the power of your own thoughts will grow exponentially.

"New Breakthroughs in Trauma Resolution: Holographic Memory Resolution"
presented by:
Brent M. Baum, ICADC, LISAC, CCH.
October 15th 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
This free presentation will introduce you to recent breakthroughs in trauma resolution. We will examine trauma, a process that happens at moments of overwhelm, and present new approaches to its resolution. Moving past a model that helps people cope after trauma, these techniques, which Brent has developed for over 13 years working with over 13,000 people, bring about direct resolution needed so that people don't just survive, they are able to thrive after disaster. These techniques have been successfully used by clinical practitioners to help those with addictions, disorders or depression; returning veterans; emergency response professionals; and the survivors of natural and unnatural disasters, including those of Hurricane Katrina, the Oklahoma City bombing, and 9/11. Using a visual reframing technique and nervous system support, the goal is to work with the subconscious mind to release the emotional charge of the traumatic event. When the subconscious mind can feel safe, its protective hold on the original scene is released, which diminishes or resolves both the physical and the emotional pain. Join Brent Baum as he shares inspiring stories of survival and transformation, as he reviews the principles of body-centered, client-centered therapy, the physiology and dynamics of trauma induction, and the three levels of the trauma continuum. The hallmark of this new process, called Holographic Memory Resolution®, is the empowerment of individuals as they develop their own internal resources for resolving the pain of traumatic memory.
The cost is FREE but registration is required. Register by mail, phone, fax, or email: Jackie Goldman North Shore Wellness Services 3000 Dundee Rd., #411, Northbrook, IL 60062 PHONE: 847-412-8000 FAX: 847-205-0377 EMAIL: Jackie@northshorewellness.com

NEGATIVE PRESSURE MASSAGE CUPPING WORKSHOPS
presented by: Jesse MacLean
October 31st-Nov. 2nd
8:00-6:00pm
cost: $400.00
Cupping is a traditional, time-honored treatment remaining favored by millions of people worldwide because it's safe, comfortable and remarkably effective for many health disorders. It's the use of suction, rather than compression for bodywork ranging from myofascia release to lymphatic drainage- and everything in between! Cupping rapidly facilitates rigid soft tissue release, loosens & lifts connective tissues, breaks up and drains stagnation while increasing blood & lymph flow to skin and muscles in ways not possible using compression.
24 CEU Workshop covers: -History - Theory - Benefits - Equipment - Safety - Protocols - Biomagnetic Therapy - Lymphatic and Fascia Systems - Detox - Reflexology and Facial Treatments Negative Pressure stretches the tissues away from underlying structures, effectively changing the pressure and loosening joints, muscles and fascia. At the cellular level, it clears debris, delivers rich bloods, lymph and nutrients back to cells, tissues and organs-plus it really feels great.
