FIRE ELEMENT by: Ayesha Atique
According to Chinese medicine's five element theory, summer is ruled by the fire element. The fire element corresponds to the heart and small intestine, the southerly direction, the climatic condition of heat, the color red, the emotion of happiness or joy, the sound of laughter, the taste of bitterness, and the odor of burning. Fire controls the blood vessels and is reflected in the face and complexion.
Element: Fire Nature: Yang Organs: Heart, Small Intestine, Tongue and Complexion Emotion: Joy
Fire is symbolic of maximum activity or greatest yang, which means that it is a time of heat, outgoingness, and moving outward in nature and in our lives. This is the season to nourish and pacify our spirits while maximizing our potential as we find joy in the hot summer days and warm summer nights.
Signs that the fire element is in balance include a strong and healthy heart, a calm mind and the ability to sleep soundly. When the fire element is imbalanced, we may either lack joy (depression) or have an excess of joy (mania). Indicators of an imbalance in the fire element also include agitation, nervousness, heartburn, and insomnia.
This is a great time to schedule your acupuncture seasonal tune up! To learn more, contact Ayesha Atique, Licensed Acupuncturist at: 630.640.6763 or atique.acupuncture@gmail.com

CONTAGIOUS TRANSFORMATION by Rebecca Tews-Kozlowski, PhD
Warmed by the brightness and penetrating energy of our summer sun, July brings us to the peak of our radiance. This month begs us to look into the dark corners of our gardens and see them transformed with the circle of life and the energy and vibrancy of all that is growing and transforming around us. In this bright world we are challenged as well to embrace our own inner illumination and transformation. The natural world is a mirror in which we can see our own interdependence with the natural world and our social world. The energy and warmth of this month can encourage our change and growth and challenge us to face once dark corners of our lives which benefit from brilliant illumination. Growth and personal transformation begun now can carry us through the darker months inevitably on the horizon. The energetic awareness of seeing ourselves transformed by the light and empowered to embrace change and accept joyful living as our birthright expands our ability to connect meaningfully with those around us. The energy is contagious in a spontaneously and incredibly wonderful way.
We are the conduits of abundance, personal and social transformation. The more consciously we embrace the light around us and within us, the more we attract those experiences to us. We become radiating resources of positive illuminated energy encouraging others to change their own vision of themselves and their existence.
But what does all of this really look like from a practical point of view? First and foremost it is about embracing the opportunities to connect meaningfully and personally with all
that is around us. Whether that means taking the time to observe the movement of natural world and to savor the experience of seeing this realm with new eyes or looking more carefully and deeply at the people around you as you go through your day, the key is use all of your senses to appreciate what is to be sensed--mindfully. The second step is to acknowledge not just what it is but also what can be-in effect acknowledging a vision of the infinite potential around us. When we do so we look at the world and our fellow travelers as though they already were what they potentially could be. This changes our interaction as we begin radiating the vision. This allows them, as Marianne Williamson proclaims, to be liberated by their interactions with us. It is an invitation to become someone who inspires others just as they have been inspired by us.
In the final analysis, all that is good, spontaneous and joyful-the transformative experiences of love, appreciation, creativity, and spiritual connection all trace their source to this inward light. It is the essential power of the universe, and though perhaps just one symbolic form of that light, the radiance of our mid-summer sun infuses us with a tangible experience of that warmth, energy and illumination. So as you bask in the sun over the next few weeks (even if it is more chore or errand based) welcome its energy into your day and take a moment to connect the external energy with your own meditative experience of inward enlightenment and transformation. Challenge yourself to radiate that energy toward others and see if they respond by visibly brightening before your eyes. Challenge yourself to shine that energy toward family and coworkers and look for the positive changes it brings. Challenge yourself to accept the warmth and brilliance as part of your own being and as an essential component of being all that you are joyfully meant to become.

Meditation Muse:
Sunshine
by Nancy Ging, LCSW
Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry Sunshine on the water looks so lovely Sunshine almost always makes me high
Light and lovely, smooth and flowing are these words of John Denver, lyrics that ring out with friendliness in our memory bank. Sun, Fun, Joy and Bliss. Themes for this month are all things bright and beautiful, awakening the Spirit within us in this happy season of summertime. For many of us the impact of sunshine on our well being is immense. I used to feel some shame about being so dependent on sunshine to keep my mood and spirit up. I didn't want to be at the mercy of the skies, the weather. Then, several years ago while at an eight day Warrior-Monk Retreat which put me deeply and intimately into relationship with All That Is, I had a direct experience of kinship with the Sun which shifted my concern about any dependency on that ball of firelight. I moved into a personal relationship with the Sun that allowed me to take it inside myself. I wish the same for you. Try this: Find a place to sit comfortably, preferably outside. If you're inside, pretend you're outside. In your imagination you will be and that works just as well! Ask your whole body to relax and feel that you are being held in the palm of the hand of Mother Earth. Sink into a feeling of receptivity as you inhale the Earth's nurturing, nourishing energy. Now take your attention to your heart and experience it as a warm and glowing ball of firelight -- your own internal Sun. Stay with this feeling of kinship with The Sun. Know that you are related, connected, enlivened with transformative fire and Light. Use your powers of intentions as you visualize rays of golden white Light flowing out in all directions from your heart. Send sunbeams to all organs or your body, all systems within. Once you have felt your relationship with the glowing warmth of the sunbeams in the heavens, and have renewed the spark of aliveness in each cell of your body, you may feel a glow of gratitude and an urge to send forth love and Light to others. You've simply become a sunbeam for bringing bliss, peace and joy into the world. .

"New Breakthroughs in Trauma Resolution: Holographic Memory Resolution"
presented by:
Brent M. Baum, ICADC, LISAC, CCH.
July 9th 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
This free presentation will introduce you to recent breakthroughs in trauma resolution. We will examine trauma, a process that happens at moments of overwhelm, and present new approaches to its resolution. Moving past a model that helps people cope after trauma, these techniques, which Brent has developed for over 13 years working with over 13,000 people, bring about direct resolution needed so that people don't just survive, they are able to thrive after disaster. These techniques have been successfully used by clinical practitioners to help those with addictions, disorders or depression; returning veterans; emergency response professionals; and the survivors of natural and unnatural disasters, including those of Hurricane Katrina, the Oklahoma City bombing, and 9/11. Using a visual reframing technique and nervous system support, the goal is to work with the subconscious mind to release the emotional charge of the traumatic event. When the subconscious mind can feel safe, its protective hold on the original scene is released, which diminishes or resolves both the physical and the emotional pain. Join Brent Baum as he shares inspiring stories of survival and transformation, as he reviews the principles of body-centered, client-centered therapy, the physiology and dynamics of trauma induction, and the three levels of the trauma continuum. The hallmark of this new process, called Holographic Memory Resolution®, is the empowerment of individuals as they develop their own internal resources for resolving the pain of traumatic memory.
The cost is FREE but registration is required. Register by mail, phone, fax, or email: Jackie Goldman North Shore Wellness Services 3000 Dundee Rd., #411, Northbrook, IL 60062 PHONE: 847-412-8000 FAX: 847-205-0377 EMAIL: Jackie@northshorewellness.com
