President's Message
Dear fellow members and guests, When Demosthenes was asked what was the first part of oratory he answered, "'action"; and which was the second, he replied, "action"; and which was third he still answered, "action." People tend to believe actions more than words!
As communicators this observation could be viewed as unsettling, in light of the fact that many of us spend a majority of our time on the written word. But do we really? Don't we spend time strategizing with colleagues, listening to clients, interviewing subjects, and networking with others to develop relationships? These actions are subject to interpretation by others but even failure to act is a nonverbal way of communicating, isn't it? In this age of new media, real-time technology, actions speak volumes!
With that in mind, please plan to join us for two special chapter events this month.
You're invited to communicate face-to-face at our quarterly Networking Social at Shula's 347 Grille on Thursday, March 18. This is a fun opportunity to meet your industry peers in a casual setting.
I'm also thrilled to announce our new sponsorship with Ballyhoo Mobile, an integrity-based mobile marketing firm with over 18 years of experience. Ballyhoo builds every campaign with the client's ROI as the goal. Soon, we'll be able to communicate our programs and other events to your phones and hand held devices. Sign up for our mobile marketing workshop on March 19. Ballyhoo Mobile will enlighten us on how we can reach our prospects, clients and customers in this unique way. Go ahead and send your phone number to Sandy Wilson if you'd like to begin receiving text reminders.
Here's to taking action, today!

Member Spotlight Jessica Sloan
I grew up in Punta Gorda, Fla. and moved to Jacksonville after completing my undergraduate education at the University of Florida. I have bachelor's degrees in public relations and political science. My first job was working for a public relations agency. It was through my coworkers there that I was first introduced to IABC and I joined the organization in 2008. For the last two years, I have served on the Membership Committee. It was through an IABC event that I met the marketing director for Rogers Towers, P.A. and found out that there was an open position in the law firm's marketing department. The role was a perfect fit, and I have now been the firm's marketing coordinator for nearly two years. What influenced you to pursue a career as a professional communicator?I have always been interested in media and the communications industry. I began taking a few public relations classes in college to find out if this was something I could see myself doing long-term. I was lucky enough to have a class led by Dr. Kathleen Kelly. She sold me on her passion for the field and her ability to illustrate the variety of opportunities available in marketing and communications. Read More >>>> |
