President's Message
Greetings,
Summer is nearly over. Amidst continued local and national budget cuts and layoffs and despite what looks like an economy showing signs of recovery, we thought it would be appropriate to invite an expert crisis communicator to share how often unexpected situations are effectively presented to company stakeholders and the community.
I invite you to join us on September 16 when nationally recognized crisis communications expert Peter Knudson will present a variety of ways to respond to corporate or organization crisis situations. As a spokesperson or lead communicator, you'll benefit from learning how to strategically share information related to crisis situations or other events that could negatively affect your company's reputation and bottom line.
As an official spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Peter has coordinated on-scene public affairs activities for many high visibility accidents, which include the April 2009 recreational boating accident in Ponte Vedra; the ditching of an Airbus into the Hudson River; the 2008 collision between a Metrolink commuter train and a Union Pacific freight train in Chatsworth, CA; and the 2007 highway bridge collapse in Minneapolis. He has been quoted in hundreds of newspapers and other media outlets around the world and has given live interviews for radio and television. He most recently was involved with the train collisions of Metro in Washington, D. C. and at Disney World in Orlando.
This is the "can't miss" meeting of this year and I hope you'll be able to attend.Thank you for your support. As always, I look forward to seeing you in September..

"Crisis Communications: Learn best practices used in the aftermath of nationally-known crises." Peter Knudson, Public Affairs Officer, National Transportation Safety Board
Generously sponsored by:
If you'd like to learn more about the ins and outs of handling crisis communications on a continuing basis, please join us for our September 16 luncheon meeting and hear from an expert. Peter Knudson is a seasoned public affairs officer with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)* in Washington, D. C. who lives and breathes crisis communications 24/7.
Peter will explain how and when the NTSB becomes involved in an accident, how the public affairs representatives and "go teams" are assigned, the communications avenues used to communicate with the media, the follow through with the media as the extended investigation continues and other points to better prepare us for our communications crisis. He'll also provide "how to" tips that we can use in planning for and handling our own communications crisis.
*Since its inception in 1967, the NTSB has investigated more than 124,000 aviation accidents and over 10,000 surface transportation accidents. In so doing, it has become one of the world's premier accident investigation agencies. On call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, NTSB investigators travel throughout the country and to every corner of the world to investigate significant accidents and develop factual records and safety recommendations.

"I've picked up a wide
range of communication responsibilities mid-career, and IABC has been
invaluable as an educational resource for me. This chapter has many
experienced professionals right here in Jacksonville who have offered
me advice and words of wisdom. To top it off, I've made several true
friendships through working with the chapter's executive board as the chapter Membership VP." Susan McDowell, Manager of Internal Communication, Haskell |

Member Spotlight
 Tonisha Landry-Gaines
What influenced you to pursue a career as a professional communicator? At a very young age, I became interesting in informing, or educating others. I found myself searching for a better way to "get the point across" when explaining an idea or concept. Teachers and family members encouraged me to pursue a career as an educator or a lawyer, but I felt neither fit quite right into my life plan. Later in life, I learned more about communications and marketing, and I knew that a career as a professional communicator was one for which I was well suited.
You're a recent newcomer to IABC. What led you to decide to join? A few years back I began searching for a venue that afforded practical professional development similar to the experience I had in college. I attended meetings held by other professional organizations in the area, and didn't feel they catered to the diverse role of a communicator. Earlier this year, still searching for something, I literally stumbled upon IABC. I solicited feedback from 'friends' on Twitter and the positive response from the organization was overwhelming. Once I attended a couple of the chapter meetings, I knew I'd found the perfect professional development organization for me.
What benefits have you derived thus far from our local chapter? Being a member of IABC First Coast has been a great experience. I've made new professional connections, met wonderful people, attended dynamic presentations, and immediately become engaged by participating on the Communications Committee and the Social Media Sub-Committee.
What's new in your life? Switching from a full time employee to an independent contractor late last year afforded me new travel and family opportunities this summer. Now that summer is over, I am in the process of determining if I want to continue pursuing new short-term contracts as an independent professional, or pursue full-time employment with an organization. |
