JoanneKazmierskibioPresident's Message
Summer 2009 has been an exciting period of growth for our chapter.  We're at an all-time high for membership and we're offering our members a variety of professional development opportunities. Our members are key to the success of our organization and our goal is to provide valuable learning opportunities that will enhance their careers.

I thought I would introduce our Chapter Committee members in these monthly communications. Since our area of focus this month is LinkedIn and Twitter, I'd like to introduce our Social Media Committee.

IABC First Coast benefits from an experienced, talented Social Media Committee - Sandy Wilson, Jonathan Bennett, Candy Bowen, Tonisha Gaines, Jamie Russell, Angela Vigil and Shae Young. These chapter members work to provide new media opportunities for improved communication and education for our members. This month, they have launched a LinkedIn Group where our members may post comments, suggestions and even post job opportunities. They are also working on Educational Videos for our members. Expect exciting announcements from this Committee and don't forget to sign up for our LinkedIn group and follow us on Twitter. .

As always, thank you for your support. It's with your support that we are able to offer free workshops to our members. I look forward to seeing you at our August meetings and social events.

Sincerely,
Joanne Kazmierski, IABC First Coast President

Using Social Media in a Marketing Campaign, including LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and specialized microsites and blogs."

Todd LynchPresented by Todd Lynch, St. John & Partners.

Social media - it's gone from an industry craze to a cultural craze. Online conversations are changing the way brands and their constituents interact. As communication professionals, how important is it, how do we use it, and how are businesses implementing it to cultivate brand ambassadors and build business? Todd Lynch, V.P., director of public relations at St. John & Partners will present an overview of the social media landscape, bring some user numbers into focus, and utilize case histories to demonstrate how social media can be an effective device in the communication tool belt. The conversation is started...will you be part of it?

Member Spotlight

Karen StewartKaren Stewart, the chapter's Finance Director, has been an IABC member since the mid-'80s.  "I joined the Indianapolis chapter when I was working in employee communications for a utility in Indiana," she says. "IABC was, and still is, the best professional association for communicators who wear a lot of hats - doing everything from marketing and PR to employee communications."   Karen has maintained her membership through successive positions, overseeing marketing and communications for religious organizations, civil engineering firms and banks. "No matter what industry or what type of communications work I was doing, IABC had the resources I needed to help me," she adds.

You've done marketing for many years. What events, or people, in your life, influenced you to go that route?
Probably like most of us, my first love was reading, and then writing.  After earning a degree in Journalism from Indiana University, newspaper reporting jobs were hard to find even back then.  So my first position out of school was writing for a trade magazine, "Hardware Retailing."   Writing for a living every day was a great way to hone my skills, and I sure learned a lot about nails and screws!    In successive jobs, I've certainly broadened my skill set, but writing is still my favorite part of the communications process.

You've been a member of IABC for many years. What changes have you seen take place in IABC over the years that have most benefited you in your career?
Resources on the Web! Back in the "old days" when I first joined, we hadn't developed the internet or made it as accessible as it is now. If you haven't gone to the IABC International website and really looked at what you have there, stop reading this and do it right now!!  No matter what strange request your CEO has sent you, there's probably something there to help you.

Tell us one thing about you that would surprise fellow members if they knew.
My Mom was a bomber pilot in World War II.  She flew B-26 bombers as a member of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs.   She hung up her wings to raise a family, but we sure enjoyed her stories about learning to fly and to live with 25 other women in a barracks with no make-up mirrors.
