JoanneKazmierskibioPresident's Message

We're entering an interesting time of opportunity for professional communicators. Our challenging economy has created a pervading atmosphere of fear among employees in most organizations and corporations. Job security?  What is that?

IABC First Coast is dedicated to provide relevant programs and professional development opportunities for our members. This year, we began a workshop and webinar series that have been designed to address emerging trends and "must-have" skills for communications professionals.

Twitter Jonathan BennettAlready this year, we've offered several Social Media webinars and workshops, a Twitter workshop (Note: photo at left features Jonathan Bennett speaking with workshop attendees.), a resume review and more professional development programs are scheduled. Have you seen our current calendar?

Please visit our new website, which has been designed and generously donated by Brunet-Garcia Multicultural Advertising Agency. Thank you to everyone at Brunet-Garcia for your hard work!

IABC First Coast continues to grow through the support of our new and renewing members and corporate donors. Thank you for recognizing our value. With your support, we are able to offer more learning opportunities and reach more people in our community. We look forward to seeing you at our meetings, workshops and social events.

Accreditation Workshop

5 -  6:30 p.m.
Florida Transportation Planning Organization
1022 Prudential Drive, Jacksonville, FL

Becoming accredited through IABC is a great way to bolster your career and show the world that you have earned a designation that only five percent of all IABC members achieve.

Wondering what's involved in earning your ABC? Join us for an accreditation workshop, Wed., July 22, 5 - 6:30 p.m. at the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization, 1022 Prudential Drive. Beth Stambaugh, our chapter's accreditation Chair, will explain the accreditation process and help you succeed.

A recent IABC survey shows that ABCs, employers and clients say accredited business communicators add value to their organizations and clients by practicing strategic communications management and that for many, the accreditation program was the gateway to learning and reinforcing the practice of strategic communications.

If you have five years or more communications experience and are interested in becoming accredited, RSVP to beth@writesourcecommunications.com or call Beth at 422-7335.

"Proving the Value of PR"
Mark Weiner, CEO,
PRIME Research in North America

It's a hot topic in this economy!  How do Public Relations and Communications professionals demonstrate the value of PR to the organizations and corporations we serve?

The 2009 Annual Luncheon for IABC, PRSA and FPRA will take place at the University of North Florida on Thursday, July 23, 2009.   Event check-in will begin at 11:15 a.m. followed by the luncheon and presentation from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.   Presenter Mark Weiner correctly identifies two problems common to public relations practitioners:  They fail to set objectives, and then they fail to measure what they have accomplished.  Weiner explains an uncomplicated way to correct these tendencies. He tells PR and Communications managers and their clients why taking a scientific approach can improve the professionalism of PR campaigns and gain respect for them in the marketing world.

This year, we have added an optional workshop with Mark Weiner immediately after the luncheon from 1:30 until 4 p.m. for attendees who desire in-depth learning exercises.  The workshop will be instructional, focusing on how to demonstrate and generate a positive return on your investment in PR using exercises and providing the detailed methods used by the companies cited during the luncheon.

Mark Weiner is the CEO of PRIME Research in North America.  PRIME Research is one of the world's largest public relations and corporate communications research and consulting providers with offices in Western Europe, North and South America, Eastern Europe and the Far East.  Since 1993, Mark has devoted his career to helping many of the world's most respected organizations and brands to demonstrate and generate a positive return on their investment in corporate and brand communications.  He is the author of "Unleashing the Power of PR: A Contrarian's Guide to Marketing and Communication" which was published in 2006 by John Wiley & Sons.

You've been a member of IABC for many years. What changes have you seen take place in IABC over the years that have most benefited you in your career?

IABC has grown dramatically and become much more global since I joined. That growth has given us all a broader network of colleagues to share information and ideas with when we're looking for other resources. The organization provides lots of ways to connect with fellow IABC members near and far, formally and informally, face-to-face and online.

IABC's leaders have done a great job of identifying trends and changes affecting our profession, and helping us address challenges for our organizations. That knowledge base has made me more valuable to the organizations I support.

What advice do you have for folks who are relative newcomers to IABC?

Get involved, even if it's in a small way. Volunteer opportunities give you a chance to learn new skills and get to know some of your fellow members. It can also give you great exposure! I learned about all of the jobs I've had since joining IABC through my IABC connections.

Testimonials
Aaron"Without IABC First Coast, I wouldn't have my job!
I credit my membership, active involvement and contacts within the chapter for helping me secure my communications specialist job at Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.  Fellow member, Kathy McIlvaine, VP of Marketing and Communications for Community Hospice posted the position on our chapter's Web site, and I contacted her about my interest in the position. In turn, she contacted influential members to learn about my skill sets and  experience. The rest is history."

Interactive Job Search

Looking for a job?  Need to make yourself stand out from the crowd? Get active on the web!  From personal websites and blogging to social networking and online resumes, being "available" on-line may increase your chances of being discovered by potential employers.

Many people are turning to the web to network and look for opportunities to enhance their skill set, and there are a number of tools available for such use.  LinkedIn for example is the perfect professional social network to increase your connections and get plugged in to potential opportunities. Others are creating personal websites to showcase their work experience and portfolio samples.  Recently a new service called VisualCV was introduced to provide people the ability to create an interactive online professional portfolio.

VisualCV is more than an online resume. VisualCV allows you to create a profile of your professional experience and compliment it with copies of your work; from writing samples to PowerPoint presentations, and even video - you can create an interactive portfolio of your work experience.

Once your profile is created, you can make it public and share with others, create a personalized URL and use the link in your email signature or on your paper resume, and forward the link to potential employers.  The resources available from using VisualCV don't stop there.  VisualCV is integrated with LinkedIn and completely portable.

VisualCV is not the only online resource available, but it is extremely easy to use. Try it for yourself! Visit VisualCV for a full tour of the product, sign up for a webinar, view job postings, or browse resumes of others. Good luck and happy job hunting!
