Your Brand Experience - Is There One?

Hello fellow IABC members, colleagues and friends!Joanne Kazmierski

As we traverse through the 5th month of 2009, it's a great time reflect on your core communication message - your brand. Scott Talgo, Brand Strategist tells us that "A brand that captures your mind gains behavior. A brand that captures your heart gains commitment."  This statement resonates with me because it holds true for our company and personal brands.

Please join us May 13 at 11:30 a.m. at the WJCT studios to be inspired by Will Ketchum, a 20-year veteran and strategist on brands. Will will take us through various thought processes on branding. I eagerly await the opportunity to be energized, hope you will too!

Have a great month....onward and upward!

Sincerely,

Member Spotlight:  Kristen Potter
 Kristen Potter
Kristen Potter is an Account Leader at Keymer Group Strategic Communications. Kristen works on Corporate Communications, Public Affairs and Crisis Management accounts serviced from Jacksonville and Washington D.C. She joined IABC in early 2008, where she volunteers on the Membership Committee. If you've attended an after hours networking event at Maggiano's Restaurant, then you've seen Kristen's involvement with our chapter, because she usually coordinates those events.

How did you end up having a career in communications?

I graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a minor in Business in 2005. I then obtained my Masters of Science degree in Business Management in 2006. After I finished school, I moved to Jacksonville because my husband took a job here. My favorite business courses were communications classes, so I began looking for jobs in the marketing and communications fields. I had also enjoyed an internship I completed with Rep. Tom Feeney's (R-FL) office and was hoping to use my Political Science degree as well. As an agency that offers public affairs as well as corporate communications, the Keymer Group offered just that. I was hired as an Account Leader in March of 2007. As an Account Leader I'm able to use my communications skills in interacting with journalists, analysts and other opinion formers as well as on regulatory and government affairs issues for some of our Washington DC clients.

Right after you joined IABC you jumped into a volunteer role with the Membership Committee. What led you to become actively involved with our chapter right from the get-go?

IABC was very different from any other professional development/networking group I had attended. Everyone at IABC made me feel incredibly welcome and made it very easy to get involved. Volunteering seemed like the natural step after becoming a member. I enjoy being on the Membership Committee particularly because I like interacting with incoming members and visitors. Mitzi Saul encouraged me to start volunteering when she was Membership Vice President, and I am really glad that I did.

How has being an IABC member helped you grow as a professional communicator?

At IABC's professional development events I always learn something new and learn ways to apply these new things in my daily work. The professional development events are of great value to me. IABC has also helped me develop leadership skills and confidence in discussing the Keymer Group's core business. Being able to interact with professional communicators of such high caliber is a fantastic experience for someone like me, who is just starting their career.

If you could suggest one thing to your fellow IABC chapter members, what would you tell them?

I would encourage all IABC members to get involved in this chapter because what you put into the organization is what you will get out of it. Speak to any of the board members or even me if you are interested in volunteering or just learning more about what IABC has to offer.

Describe your dream job.

There are many things I wish I had time to do in my life, but being a U.S. Representative or Senator would probably be my dream job. There is something exhilarating about traveling to Washington DC for work that has always made me think about what it would be like to be a part of the law-making process in this country. I would consider it an honor to be able to represent this country and to hopefully make a positive impact on it.
Get Your Professional Head Shot Taken

First Coast IABC chapter photographer Pete Helow, of Pete Helow Photography, will offer $25 members/$50 non-members head shots again for the May 13 meeting attendees.

In addition, current IABC First Coast members will receive a 50% discount on head shots done in Pete Helow's studio as a special member benefit. Employees in the current member's company will  receive a 25% discount as well.

Thank you, Pete! Welcome to IABC First Coast.
Learn More about Accreditation

Becoming accredited through IABC is a great way to bolster your career and show the world that you have earned a designation that only five percent of all IABC members achieve.

Wondering what's involved in earning your ABC? Join us for an Accreditation Workshop, Tuesday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization, 1022 Prudential Drive. Beth Stambaugh, our chapter's accreditation Chair, will explain the accreditation process and help you succeed.

A recent IABC survey shows that ABCs, employers and clients say accredited business communicators add value to their organizations and clients by practicing strategic communications management and that for many, the accreditation program was the gateway to learning and reinforcing the practice of strategic communications.

If you have five years or more communications experience and are interested in becoming accredited, contact beth@writesourcecommunications.com
