Are You Insane?
Joanne Kazmierski
Hello my fellow IABC members, colleagues and friends!

As I write you this message for February, I ask you are you insane? Now you may be wondering how does this question apply to me in my work as a communications and marketing professional? Albert Einstein, the 20th Century's most influential theoretical physicist and Time Magazine's Person of the Century in 1999, gave us the definition of insanity as follows:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

In January, I asked you to challenge yourself to welcome new people into your personal network, learn something new and create opportunities that might seem impossible. Have you made any forward movement on any of these? Or, are you like so many who make New Year's resolutions only for them to be forgotten by Valentine's Day?

As you read this message on your Blackberry, I-Phone, your preferred PDA or Smartphone or even on your computer, I urge you to pause a moment and reflect on change.

In our industry, it is clear that change is necessary for individuals and corporations to survive the current economic situation. We must challenge ourselves to learn and master new communications vehicles and strategies.

This morning I hand-wrote Einstein's definition of insanity on a sheet of paper in bold black letters and pasted it on my bathroom mirror, a place that I begin my day taking a serious look at myself. I don't want to be insane; rather, I want to be the one to change the course of my life making my family, faith and career stronger than it's ever been. Einstein also said "You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else."

First Coast IABC wants to help you "play better than anyone else." Make this year your best - personally and professionally and remember that the only one who can change you is YOU!

Hope to see you at one of our upcoming IABC professional development meetings, webinars and/or networking events!

Sincerely,

Member Spotlight:  Candy Bowen
 Candy Bowen
Candy Bowen recently sat down with fellow IABC member, Lois Fiorelli, to answer a few questions about her career, family, hobbies and IABC experiences. Candy is the Marketing Communications Manager/Webmaster for St. Vincent's Healthcare. She is also involved in recreating our First Coast IABC web page.

What led you to a career in communications?
I started out as a journalist. I enjoyed writing and I wanted a career where I could learn about different people and places and things. Now I work in Public Relations and Marketing - mostly on the Web and it's an exciting place to be.

What do you like about your job?
I love the World Wide Web. I like having a job where I can be online for eight hours a day. In a way, it is like being a journalist because I still get to write and learn about different people and places and things.

What do you like about being an IABC member?
I love the programs and the information on the international web site. After working in journalism for 13 years, I felt like I needed a primer in moving to the public relations side of things. The answers to nearly every question I had about how to maneuver in this realm can be found either on that web site or from some of the great friends I've met by networking through IABC.

What are your hobbies?
I like reading, writing, dabbling in personal finance, and learning Web 2.0. I also like to sleep when I get some free moments (I have a 15 month old).

What's your most played song on your iPod?
Oddly enough, I don't own an iPod; I keep saying I'm going to get one because I LOVE all types of music. If you want to know what I listen to in my car, it's mostly gospel - Kirk Franklin.

What would your dream job be?
My dream job would be actually getting paid to blog and develop Web 2.0 strategies for organizations.

The IABC EXCHANGE - Enter The Blogosphere at Your Own Pace

The IABC eXchange is an online tool that connects the popular WordPress blogging platform with IABC's member database of more than 16,000 communicators. This allows you to create private web pages and grant access to specific members with the press of a button.

  • Invite your fellow members to collaborate or share documents online.
  • Develop a private blog that only your personal IABC contacts can view.
  • Create a newsletter and invite members of your chapter to subscribe.

You can also create traditional blogs open to the whole world or limit access to IABC members only-a great way to test the waters in a safe atmosphere and see if blogging is for you. Share your thoughts, opinions and expertise, and your blog may be featured in IABC's worldwide member communication.
