Greetings!

As we continue our series on the Twelve Commandments of Auditioning- This week it'sV. VI. "Thou Shalt Not Touch the Casting Director"
When you walk into the room for an audition how should you greet the casting director?  Should you shake hands?  If the script indicates hugging or kissing or some romantic behavior with another character in the script how far should you go?
As for the greeting, let the casting director set the tone.  If they offer to shake hands, then it's okay to do so, but if they don't offer, then don't reach out and grab their hand.  Many casting directors are "germaphobic' and just don't want to touch anyone.  It's especially true if it is flu season.  We sometimes see dozens of people in a day, so you can imagine how hard it is not to pick up whatever illness is going around.  Just a wave and a friendly smile will usually suffice.  If the audition sides call for a touch or romantic interlude with the other character, you'll need to find some creative way to suggest that action without invading the casting director's or reader's personal space. This may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how many actors will reach out and try to grab the casting director's hand or attempt to caress his or her face during an audition. That's just not appropriate. If you think it's necessary, you can ask "May I take your hand during the scene?"  If they say it's okay, go ahead, but NEVER  touch the casting director without permission.  It breaks everyone's concentration. We stop thinking about your performance and start thinking, Oh my God, what is this person doing? There's really no need for it and it doesn't really enhance your performance.  Most of the time you're standing on the mark and it isn't possible anyway.

"The Whelan Recording Technique is helpful in bringing the necessary battle between instinct and technique to a peaceful accord."  Kelsey Grammar, Star of "Frasier"

The MOSAIC ACTING SYSTEM (www.mosaicacting.com) is the next step in the evolution of acting and directing.  One day with the Whelan Recording Technique is like a week of ordinary rehearsal.  The character and relationship with other characters come together effortlessly in an matter of minutes.  Line memorization is achieved with ease and speed never before experienced.
Emotions are to actors what colors are to painters.  The more access you have to them, the richer your  performance, but we've never had a way until now to make this internal abstract something external and concrete.  EMOTIONOLOGY  provides the tools for actors to study emotions in an objective and systematic fashion.  The MOSAIC ACTING SYSTEM provides that and more.
I've taught and trained actors and directors in London, Toronto, and cities in the USA, as well as presenting Mosaic Acting to schools and teachers from middle-school to the University level, including the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.  Come join us!

A fight is brewin' at mom's house. Austin is on the brink of something big. He has secured a Hollywood deal for his latest film script. Lee is a bum: a free agent. He's got nothing to his name except a six pack and a criminal record. They're brothers but they are as different as day and night. In this deliciously dark play of duality, Sam Shepard takes a long, hard look at America, from the romanticized West to the tranquility of picket-fenced suburbia.

Featuring Eric Baldwin, Cole Alexander Smith*, Janis Stevens*, Jonathan Rhys Williams*
*Members of Actor's Equity Association
