What Charle's Students have to say . . .
|
 Heather Pier
I recently made the switch to working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting business (just like any technology) changes happen fast.
The one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned out to be right on the money. LA is a big and expensive move to make. Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes. He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid, up-to-date information that you can use. _______________________ If you're one of Charlie's Students and would like to be featured, email your headshot and comments to: charlie@charlieactor.com _______________________

Greetings!
And we continue our series on the Twelve Commandments of Auditioning- The Third Commandment of Auditioning. "Thou Shalt Not Start the Audition With a Negative or Apology" One of the worst things you can do is go into an audition and say, "Oh, I'm sorry, I just got these sides." Casting directors really dislike this. These days there are just too many ways you can get your sides in advance via email or fax. When I was in LA in don't know how many times I drove through rush hour traffic so I could pick up the script and be prepared for an audition the next morning. At Media Casting Group we usually send the sides to you or your agent once you confirm the audition. We never want to hear that from an actor. It tells us you're not interested in auditioning for us, so why should we be interested in your audition? Every time we conduct auditions, we'll have three or four who say they haven't even looked at the sides yet. If by some reason you can't get the sides in advance, at least show up early enough to go over them and make some intelligent choices. When you start your audition with an apology or excuse, you're already setting up the expectation that the audition is going to be bad. Part of the illusion of the whole process is that it starts the moment you come in the room. All of that is the audition- it's not just when you say your first line. Come into the room with confidence, expecting to like the auditioners and guess what . . . they'll probably like you. Next time around, The Fourth Commandment of Auditioning, "Thou Shalt Not Go Into the Room in Character" Thanks, Charlie Holliday Mosaic Acting Academy
But now a word from our sponsors . . . |
Only a few days left to enroll . . .do it now! THE *MOSAIC ACTING ACADEMY
Voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors PRESENTS "ALPHA COLD-READING TECHNIQUE" SATURDAYS FROM 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM MARCH 17 - APRIL 7 Charlie Holliday has had more than one hundred major movie and TV auditions. Come learn the techniques that have him landed dozens of roles.
There are two skills an actor must learn in order to work in movies and TV - Cold Reading and Improvisation. Unlike Theater auditions, which often request monologues, Movie and TV auditions don't generally use prepared memorized material. In this class you will learn a technique of the Mosaic Acting System that allows you to use the subjective mind to quickly create a character with depth and substance, rather than just trying to "learn the words". These same tools can then be used to create a character for Screen, Stage or any type of performance. As the class progresses, we cover cold reading and audition techniques, as well as scene and monologue work. As the class size is limited to a minimum of 8 and maximum of 12 new students, pre-registration by the Monday before the class is required. This class will be presented on 4 Saturdays from 10:00 AM- 4:30 PM. Tuition is $300, and includes an audio CD. (Repeat fee for prior students of this class - $200)

 Film Auditions and News . . .
__________________________________________________________________ Producer Gale Anne Hurd, whose credits include The Terminator, The Hulk and Aliens as well as AMC's hit drama The Walking Dead, is urging the California legislature to expand state tax credits to compete more effectively against other states that offer them.
Saying that she has not filmed a movie or TV show in California since 2003,
Hurd told the Los Angeles Times. "As much as I would like to
sleep in my own bed at night and employ many of the incredibly talented
California-based crew members, I have filmed instead in Georgia, Toronto
and Detroit and many other [places] with much higher [tax] incentives."
Hurd also complained of the restrictions on the California tax credits
that are currently in place. For example, she said, "You have to apply
by June 1, and even if you are awarded the credit you have to start
rolling your cameras 180 days after you're notified [of an approval].
But if your cast member isn't available until January or February, then
it doesn't work."
She also urged that the annual tax-credit fund be
raised from $100 million to $200 million a year and noted that New
York's is $420 a year. "When you think about the number of people
working in the industry, there are far more people based in California
than in New York, but New York right now has more than four times the
incentive."

_______________________________________________________________________________________________ Greetings friends, As the CFF gears up for the coming Sacramento International Film Festival we've been getting a lot of questions. One of the main questions is "Can I help"? Short answer is yes! We'll be putting out a call for general volunteers in the coming weeks (ushers, P.A.s etc.) but at this time we are looking for a few committed folks to join our A-TEAM! What's THE A-Team?? These are folks committed to helping us accomplish our grass roots marketing and PR goals for the festival. Now, before I go further, let me state: we are looking for HARD WORKERS ONLY who have 12 hours minimum per week and can make a meeting each Sunday (including this Sunday) at 12:30pm. ALSO, if you have no interest in promotions and marketing...or don't even know what that means...probably not for you. Not trying to sound ungrateful, just being honest. Wouldn't want to waste your time. IF however, YOU LOVE marketing, have a great, TEAM ATTITUDE and ARE a self starter then this may just be the volunteer gig you have been seeking. Nothing is sacred in this revue featuring such Lehrer favorites such as "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," The Vatican Rag," an unforgettable Gilbert and Sullivan-esque recitation of the table of elements, linked together with his own inimitable concert patter. MARCH 11 PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING AT THE CALIFORNIA STAGE THEATRE:
At the Sunday, March 11, Playwrights Collaborative Meeting (7:00 PM) we will read and discuss Matthew Abergel's "Second-Best Bed", a British-style farce about six kooky characters' desperate quest to find a lost Shakespeare play. It shoots for Downton Abbey wit and sophistication shaken and stirred with Noises Off! hijinks and door-slamming mayhem. This workshop is at the California Stage Theatre, 2509 "R" Street (on "R" Street between 25th and 26th Streets), Sacramento. The Playwrights Collaborative thanks the California Stage Theater Company for the use of its theater.
For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267) Please let me know if you would like to be removed from this list. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights. "The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere. Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed." WORKSHOPS: At each workshop, original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production. Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area. There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater. STAGED READINGS: Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production. A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts. Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works. The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers. Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present. The Playwrights Collaborative does not share its e-mail list information with anyone. ___________________________________________________________________________
