What Charle's Students have to say  . . .
Shiela LaPolla

Charlie's studio isn't glamorous; it's a working studio.

Bit by bit, you will learn the ins and outs of the business aspect, the emotional aspect, the theatrical aspect, the visual and auditory aspect, and the nuances of the acting business.

You will learn in an informal, open, honest and unassuming way how you can be an integral part of an alluring artistic and potentially lucrative business.

It's been a very long time since I dappled in the acting business.  Yes, it's been awhile, but, after taking Charlie's classes, I'm ready, willing and able to take the plunge once again.

Thank you,

Sheila

Greetings!

As promised, we continue our series  the "Twelve Commandments of Auditioning."  Here's The Second Commandment;
""THOU SHALT NOT MAKE TOO MUCH of a SMALL PART."
Jeff Greenberg, one of Hollywood's top casting directors, had this to say: "Don't get small-part fever and make a meal out of a very small role by trying
to enhance it with too many choices. Don't try to make it more than it is. Keep it simple."  Sure, you want to show the casting folks that you are capable of larger parts, but less is more on the small parts.  When people come in for one or two lines, these are really hard parts to cast, so keep it simple.  You'd be surprised how many people can't say, 'Here's your pizza.''  I remember having Glen Gordon Caron, who created the hit series "Moonlighting" tell me,,, "Charlie, the movie isn't about the security guard."  Most of the time you are just a device to move the plot forward, so don't try to turn it into Macbeth.
Next issue we'll talk about The Third Commandment of Auditioning " Thou Shalt Not Start the Audition With a Negative or Apology."
Thanks,
Charlie Holliday

THE *MOSAIC ACTING ACADEMY

Voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors
PRESENTS
"ALPHA COLD-READING TECHNIQUE"
SATURDAYS FROM 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM
MARCH 17 - APRIL 7
Charlie Holliday has had more than one hundred major movie and TV auditions.  Come learn the techniques that have him landed dozens of roles.

There are two skills an actor must learn in order to work in movies and TV - Cold Reading and Improvisation.  Unlike Theater auditions, which often request monologues, Movie and TV auditions don't generally use prepared memorized material. In this class you will learn a technique of the Mosaic Acting System that allows you to use the subjective mind to quickly create a character with depth and substance, rather than just trying to "learn the words". These same tools can then be used to create a character for Screen, Stage or any type of performance. As the class progresses, we cover cold reading and audition techniques, as well as scene and monologue work. As the class size is limited to a minimum of 8 and maximum of 12 new students, pre-registration by the Monday before the class is required. This class will be presented on 4 Saturdays from 10:00 AM- 4:30 PM. Tuition is $300, and includes an audio CD. (Repeat fee for prior students of this class - $200)

CALIFORNIA FILM FOUNDATION

A message to all members of California Film Foundation

Greetings friends,

As the CFF gears up for the coming Sacramento International Film Festival we've been getting a lot of questions. One of the main questions is "Can I help"?

Short answer is yes!

We'll be putting out a call for general volunteers in the coming weeks (ushers, P.A.s etc.) but at this time

we are looking for a few committed folks to join our A-TEAM!

What's THE A-Team??

These are folks committed to helping us accomplish our grass roots marketing and PR goals for the festival. Now, before I go further, let me state: we are looking for HARD WORKERS ONLY who have 12 hours minimum per week and can make a meeting each Sunday (including this Sunday) at 12:30pm.

ALSO, if you have no interest in promotions and marketing...or don't even know what that means...probably not for you. Not trying to sound ungrateful, just being honest. Wouldn't want to waste your time.

IF however, YOU LOVE marketing, have a great, TEAM ATTITUDE and ARE a self starter then this may just be the volunteer gig you have been seeking. To learn more you must go to our page and sign up:

 http://www.californiafilm.net/group/ateam

Our meeting is at Carol's Books

1913 Del Paso Blvd.

Sacramento 95815.

12:30pm SHARP!!

Would love to see you there this Sunday!

It is by invite only so call me if you are interested:

Now at the Sutter Street Theater's Director's Series

Tomfoolery
By Tom Lehrer
Directed by Michael Coleman
Musical Direction by John Wilder

Performancescontinue  through April 1 at 7:00pm on Thursdays and Sundays and 4:00pm on Saturdays.  Reservations can be made by calling 916-353-1001 or on-line.

In concerts, television appearances and a series of now-classic recordings, the Harvard-educated math professor, Tom Lehrer, delighted millions of fans during the 1950's and 60's with his dry, cynical but good-humored attacks on the A-bomb, racism, pollution, pornography, the military, the boy scouts and, of course, mathematics. Nothing is sacred in this revue featuring such Lehrer favorites such as "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," The Vatican Rag," an unforgettable Gilbert and Sullivan-esque recitation of the table of elements, linked together with his own inimitable concert patter. Rediscover the man and songs that have delighted and skewered the world for over forty years in Tomfoolery. This is the first of five shows for 2012 in Sutter Street Theatre's new Director's Series.

MARCH 11 PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING AT THE CALIFORNIA STAGE THEATRE:

At the Sunday, March 11, Playwrights Collaborative Meeting (7:00 PM) we will read and discuss Matthew Abergel's "Second-Best Bed", a British-style farce about six kooky characters' desperate quest to find a lost Shakespeare play. It shoots for Downton Abbey wit and sophistication shaken and stirred with Noises Off! hijinks and door-slamming mayhem.
This workshop is at the California Stage Theatre, 2509 "R" Street (on "R" Street between 25th and 26th Streets), Sacramento.
The Playwrights Collaborative thanks the California Stage Theater Company for the use of its theater.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267)  Please let me know if you would like to be removed from this list.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights.
"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere.  Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."
WORKSHOPS: At each workshop,  original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production.  Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area.  There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.
STAGED READINGS:  Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production.  A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.

Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works.  The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers.  Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.

The Playwrights Collaborative does not share its e-mail list information with anyone.
