Recently I receive this e-mail from Sarah, in Canada. Hi, I live in Canada and I don't speak English very well. But I would like to know where and how I could become an actress in California? And I would like to know if you have a list of agents or managers who looking for debutante actresses ? Thank you so much for your time !!! Sarah
Here's my reply. Hello, Sarah, I wish there were an easy answer to your question, but there isn't. Where in Canada do you live? To be honest, one of the problems actors face in the States, is that so much of our production has gone to Canada. Due to the favorable exchange rate of American to Canadian dollars and the incentives offered by the governments of Canada and its provinces, Toronto and Vancouver, BC have become favored locations for shooting. However, fluency in English is very important, as they want you to sound "American" if you want to work on US movies and TV, so you'll need to work hard to learn the language. Of course, the best way to learn it is to be where you have to use it on a daily basis.
As for agents and managers, beware of "management companies" as they have no real rules and regulations they must follow. Agents must be licensed and are regulated, especially in California. (see the article about them in the From Charlie's Desk section of my web site, www.charlieactor.com) You can get a list of agencies from www.sag.org, the web site of the Screen Actors Guild. If you are hoping to work in movies and TV, you will probably have to go to Los Angeles. It's a tough market, though, as there are literally thousands of actors there, all hoping to be the next big star! That doesn't mean it can't be done. You just need to have a good, solid plan. There are many steps along the road to success as actor, and very few shortcuts. You need training, experience, and luck. Training should be done with people who are working actors, the easiest way to get experience is in small theaters and independent films, and luck is what happens when preparation intersects with opportunity.
I hope I've been a small amount of help to you, and feel free to write me again. I wish you the best; acting is both a difficult and rewarding career. Just keep working toward your goals, and don't let others discourage you by telling you all the reasons it can't be done.

Acting for camera uses a different set of skills than acting on stage. Charlie brings his experience in more than 40 movies and TV shows to this is a "nuts and bolts" class for actors at all levels who want to develop or improve their skills in front of the camera. The first half of each class is spent explaining and practicing various special problems confronting the film/TV actor, such as: hitting the mark, finding your light, overlaps, set protocol, stunt work, etc. In the second half of each class, participants work from movie and TV scripts using those techniques. LA TIMES: "A potent cocktail of laughter and edge-of-the-seat dread."
California Stage is celebrating 20 years with Ovation Award Winner "THE IDEA MAN' as it nails the greedy acts of large corporations to their front doors.
Kevin King's "The Idea Man," received its world premiere with the Elephant Theatre Company in Hollywood immediately winning the best playwriting award at the Los Angeles Ovation Awards. Following California Stage's production, " The Idea Man"will open in New York in March of this year.
Al Carson is a skilled toolmaker, but is a guy with self-described "anger issues." He is also an irrepressible skirt-chasing, beer-drinking, smart-mouthed know-it-all, father of six kids by two wives and an interim girlfriend. Al has a talent. He is a mechanical savant with a head full of ideas, one gem of which, he drops in the factory suggestion box. The corporate execs see millions and give Al a small plaque and $100. Then the fun begins.
"The Idea Man" stars veteran professional actor, Loren Taylor and Elly award winning actors Eric Baldwin, Michele Kohler, Charlie Holliday, Christina Clem, Michele Koehler, Jawara Duncan, Nicholas Koehler and West Ramsey. The play will be directed by Penny Meagher, produced by Ray Tatar with set designs by Gary Nyland and costumes by Julie Dahl.
"The Idea Man" will run Feb 18 - Mar 17, 2012 at the California Stage Theater in Midtown Sacramento: Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm Sundays at 2pm California Stage is located in the R25 Arts Complex, 2509 R Street at 25th Street Ticket prices are $20.00, for general admission, $15.00, students, SARTA members, Military and seniors, and $12.00 for groups of six or more. ___________________________________________________________________________________ FEBRUARY 19 PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING AT THE CALIFORNIA STAGE THEATRE:
At the Sunday, February 19, Playwrights Collaborative Meeting (7:00 PM) we will read and discuss Jamaal Johnson's "Beverly: An Urban Tragedy." Beverly has had it up to here with her boyfriend's so-called friend Dominique. When she issues him an ultimatum, his decision may prove costly.
This workshop is at the California Stage Theatre, 2509 "R" Street (on "R" Street between 25th and 26th Streets), Sacramento. The Playwrights Collaborative thanks the California Stage Theater Company for the use of its theater.
For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267) . Please let me know if you would like to be removed from this list. Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights. "The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere. Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed." WORKSHOPS: At each workshop, original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production. Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area. There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater. STAGED READINGS: Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production. A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts. Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works. The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers. Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present. The Playwrights Collaborative does not share its e-mail list information with anyone.
