Regarding Background Rates A while back one of our SAG members asked the question "Why is the background rate on a SAG commercial 3 times the rate for episodic TV?" The commercial and theatrical contracts are negotiated separately. Theatrical background is often several days of work, commercial is usually one. The principals receive much higher residuals for commercials than movies and television combined, and since background doesn't get residuals, SAG has negotiated a better rate for them. Actually, $139 ($17.38 per hour) plus 15% pension and welfare, plus overtime afer 8 hours, free food, meal penalties, wardrobe, etc. ain't too bad for work that anybody off the street can be trained to do in about 5 minutes. Non-union background usually get somewhere around minimum wage, plus overtime after 10 hours. It's not that background work isn't important, because it is. A movie is like a stew - the Stars are the meat and potatoes, what the movie is about. The Supporting cast is the vegetables, the herbs and spices that give "flavor" to the Stars. The background is the broth that it all swims in. Background players are also called Atmosphere - they make the picture breathe. The only reason to do background is to get a paycheck, build toward your insurance and retirement, and have a chance to learn something . . . and occasionally, it's actually fun! Hope this answers some questions, Charlie And now, a word from our sponsors . . .
