Regarding Background Rates

A while back one of our SAG members asked the question "Why is the background rate on a SAG commercial 3 times the rate for episodic TV?"
The commercial and theatrical contracts are negotiated separately. Theatrical background is often several days of work, commercial is usually one. The principals receive much higher residuals for commercials than movies and television combined, and since background doesn't get residuals, SAG has negotiated a better rate for them.
Actually, $139 ($17.38 per hour) plus 15% pension and welfare, plus overtime afer 8 hours, free food, meal penalties, wardrobe, etc. ain't too bad for work that anybody off the street can be trained to do in about 5 minutes.   Non-union background usually get somewhere around minimum wage, plus overtime after 10 hours.   It's not that background work isn't important, because it is.   A movie is like a stew - the Stars are the meat and potatoes, what the movie is about. The Supporting cast is the vegetables, the herbs and spices that give "flavor" to the Stars.   The background is the broth that it all swims in. Background players are also called Atmosphere - they make the picture breathe.   The only reason to do background is to get a paycheck, build toward your insurance and retirement, and have a chance to learn something . . . and occasionally, it's actually fun!

Hope this answers some questions,

Charlie

About Choosing a Class . . . .

Although tuition for Charlie's classes at the Mosaic Acting Studio is very reasonable,  when deciding whom you want to study with there are a lot more things to consider than just the price.   The first thing to do is look up the instructor on IMDb.com.  That will tell you what they have actually done.   Do their credits consist of a couple of independent films that they wrote and/or directed?  Have they only been in "kid shows" on Nickelodeon or Disney?  Is their background only in theater?  I want to work with someone who has worked with major directors and has appeared with "A list" actors. There is a reason why Charlie Holliday has been voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors time after time.

This office is BI-COASTAL. Rich's offices are always SUPER BUSY with feature films such as "The Help", "Conan the Barbarian" and "Dolphin Tale." They've got several projects shooting right now that he was casting last time EMH had him in. In fact, "The Help" which is currently in theatres, is one of the movies he's told us he's most proud of !
He is such a warm, actor friendly person that we can't stress enough how glad you'll be to meet him. He loves theatre actors, and often casts in LA for big shows there. His goal is to find that undiscovered talent and put them in a film or on stage in a role that lets them shine. This office casts all over the country, and has offices in LA as well as New York. You can see his credits at:
http://pro.imdb.com/name/nm1693493/

Rich will be doing a class partly on the business of being an actor, and will also work on cold reading for this class. We will be doing scene work both days with him. He loves questions so bring lots to ask him!

Tuition is ONLY $125 for BOTH Days if you register BEFORE October 10.
Tuition AFTER October 10 is $150.
Just Click  below to register or RSVP for this 2 day event .
