Mosaic Acting Academy
Voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors

Auditions, Announcements, and Other News
for September 9, 2011

Greetings!

Alyssa Montalbano

  Regarding Background Rates:

A while back one of our SAG members asked the question "Why is the background rate on a SAG commercial 3 times the rate for episodic TV?"

The commercial and theatrical contracts are negotiated separately.  Although the commercial background is a little over $300 per day, theatrical background is often several days of work, commercial is usually one. The principals receive much higher residuals for commercials than movies and television combined, and since background doesn't get residuals, SAG has negotiated a better rate for them.
Actually, $139 ($17.38 per hour) plus 15% pension and welfare, plus overtime afer 8 hours, free food, meal penalties, wardrobe, etc. ain't too bad for work that anybody off the street can be trained to do in about 5 minutes. Non-union background usually get somewhere around minimum wage, plus overtime after 10 hours. It's not that background work isn't important, because it is. A movie is like a stew - the Stars are the meat and potatoes, what the movie is about. The Supporting cast is the
vegetables, the herbs and spices that give "flavor" to the Stars. The background is the broth that it all swims in. Background players are also called Atmosphere - they make the picture breathe. The only reason to do background is to get a paycheck, build toward your insurance and retirement, and have a chance to learn something . . . and occasionally, it's actually fun!

Hope this answers some questions,

 Charlie

About choosing a class . . .

Although tuition for Charlie's classes at the Mosaic Acting Studio is very reasonable,  when deciding whom you want to study with there are a lot more things to consider than just the price.   The first thing I do is look up the instructor on IMDb.com.  That will tell me what they have actually done.   Do their credits consist of a couple of independent films that they wrote and/or directed?  Have they only been in "kid shows" on Nickelodeon or Disney?  Is their background only in theater?  I want to work with someone who has worked with major directors and has appeared with "A list" actors. There is a reason why Charlie Holliday has been voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors time after time.

The Producers Guild has a challenge for you.
Make a film - write, shoot and edit it - in two days.

We know that there are some great undiscovered producers out there.  This is the chance for them to show us what they're made of.  How fast can you mobilize your team?  Craft your story?  Find your locations?  Hunt down your costumes?  Call in your favors?  Cut the pieces together?

We're not looking for Lawrence of Arabia, here.  Your running time should be three to five minutes.  For a great producer, that's plenty of time in which to tell a mesmerizing story.

Of course, just to keep you honest, we have some specifics that your story must include.  (We can't have you go shooting the whole thing in advance, after all.)  When the contest opens, we'll post the specific elements that your film will have to utilize.  Because THE PRODUCERS GUILD WEEKEND SHORTS CONTEST has been established to honor the legacy of Debra Hill and support the Producers Guild's Debra Hill Fellowship, the specific details will be drawn from Debra's films.  These elements will be announced at the start of the filmmaking period: the evening of Friday, September 23.  But that's all we can tell you for now.

The films entered in THE PRODUCERS GUILD WEEKEND SHORTS CONTEST will be evaluated by a remarkable group of judges, including Steve Buscemi, Jamie Lee Curtis, Paul Reubens, Lesley Ann Warren, Bruce Cohen and Stacey Sher.  Each of the judges had the opportunity to work closely with Debra Hill, and we deeply appreciate their honoring her legacy by providing their time and expertise.

There are some terrific prizes, of course. THE PRODUCERS GUILD WEEKEND SHORTS CONTEST is being held through Withoutabox.com.  Click here to be taken to the contest entry page. Got questions? Email us at
shortscontest@producersguild.org
So, congratulations.  You now know what you're going to be doing over the weekend of September 23-25.  Start getting your team together now, and we look forward to seeing your film!

Plot Synopsis

BYE BYE BIRDIE is one of the most captivating musical shows of our time. It tells the story of a rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army. The singer, Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley type, has a pompadour and thick sideburns; he wears gaudy gold costumes and speaks in a rugged voice. Albert Peterson, his agent, is a very pleasant mild mannered young man. Albert's faithful secretary Rose Alvarez keeps him and Birdie moving forward in the world. Rosie concocts one final national publicity plan before Conrad's induction.

Conrad will bid a typical American teen-age girl goodbye with an all-American kiss. Kim MacAfee in Sweet Apple, Ohio wins the honor. All of the phones in her town are already busy during The Telephone Hour as Kim has just been pinned to Hugo, a local boy. She is a pretty girl of fifteen and sings with springlike ardor How Lovely to Be a Woman, as she pulls on the plaid woolen socks and the baggy mustard colored sweater considered stylish and popular among young ladies.

The arrival of Birdie in Sweet Apple causes people of all ages to swoon. Birdie says that his success is due to the fact that he is Honestly Sincere when he sings, and the quiet little town goes into a spin. The MacAfee household is completely upset by the visiting celebrity. It is decided that Birdie will give his One Last Kiss on the Ed Sullivan show. Kim's father who laments the whole uproar, tries to break into the act and behaves like a ham on the TV show. Hymn for a Sunday Evening is a salute to the greater glory of Ed Sullivan.

Birdie becomes disgusted with his life and goes out on the town with the teenagers. He feels tense with Albert and is tired of being supervised. The parents of Sweet Apple cannot understand the new generation and express this in Kids. Rosie, still waiting for that band of gold from Albert after eight years, invades a Shiners' meeting. An extremely hilarious ballet ensues. She then decides to become the Latin American spitfire that she is painted as, by Albert's lead-footed catastrophe-ridden mother. She is determined to become Spanish Rose. Kim is reunited with Hugo, and Rose with Albert in the lovely number Rosie. Other hit numbers include A Lot of Livin' to Do and Put on a Happy Face.

FRIDA KAHLO

by RUBEN AMAVIZCA MURÚA

 Contact: Richard Falcon, 549-3341   richardfalcon@att.net     www.teatronagual.com

Frida Kahlo was a renowned surrealist painter, social reformer, and wife of the prominent Mexican painter/muralist, Diego Rivera. The story of their tempestuous romance is the focus of the play. Frida Kahlo was known for her emotional paintings; forever remembered as a distinctive artist whose paintings conveyed the "pain and passion" of her relationships, her physical torment, and her conflicted feelings about the feminine experience and sexuality. "My reputation as an artist will not coincide with the cult of my personality," says the heroine of "Frida Kahlo." Dr. Manuel Pickett's staging of Rubén Amavizca Murúa's surreal collage about the iconic Mexican artist is an intense summation of her creative core as much as documentation of her remarkable history.

Sacramento Elly Award winner, Diana Mandujano will play Frida Kahlo, Richard Falcón will present her husband Diego Rivera, Frida's alter ego will be played by John Dryden and Frida's sister, Christina, will be played by Mariana SedaValentina Portelawill portray the actress, Paula, a role fashioned after the famous Mexican film actress, Maria Felix, one of Rivera's paramours.

Frida Kahlo plays September 9 to October 9, 2011 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. All shows will be performed in English. Tickets: $20 general; $15 students, seniors, and Teatro Espejo and Teatro Nagual members. PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING SEPTEMBER 18
AT THE CALIFORNIA STAGE THEATRE:

At the Sunday, September 18, Playwrights Collaborative Meeting (7:00 PM) Scott Charles will discuss his recent experience with self producing his play, "Dinners With Augie." Come prepared with questions.
We will also read and discuss "Ethics," a short play by Ron Tochterman .

This workshop is at  the California Stage Theatre, 2509 "R" Street (on "R" Street between 25th and 26th Streets), Sacramento.

The Playwrights Collaborative thanks the California Stage Theater Company for the use of its theater.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com 916-383-9267 .  Please let me know if you would like to be removed from this list.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights.

"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere.  Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."

WORKSHOPS: At each workshop,  original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production.  Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area.  There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.
STAGED READINGS:  Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production.  A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.

Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works.  The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers.  Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.

The Playwrights Collaborative does not share its e-mail list information with anyone.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267).

From a Mosaic Acting Academy Student and Working Actress ...
Heather Pier
I recently made the switch to working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting business (just like any technology) changes happen fast.
The one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned out to be right on the money.  LA is a big and expensive move to make. Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes. He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid, up-to-date information that you can use.  -  Heather Pier

Ladies polo People have been asking where to get the MOSAIC ACTING clothing articles with the beautifully embroidered logo I've been wearing - polo shirts, long sleeved Tees, hats, jackets, etc.
I get them from a company called Queensboro.  If you'd like to order something, go to the Queensboro web site and check them out.  When you find what you want, email the article number and color selection and size you want to me and I'll put together an order as soon as four of you give me payment for the items.  (I'll pay the shipping charges for you.)  You can mix and match items, and there's no minimum order for you.  Give me a call or email if you have any questions.  Thanks,
Charlie
