Mosaic Acting Academy
Voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors

Auditions, Announcements, and Other News
for August 3, 2011

Greetings!

Alyssa Montalbano

When I'm asked to speak to a group of aspiring actors, I usually ask the question "Why do you want to be an actor?" As I go around the room, pin-pointing different people to answer, I'll get responses of "Because it's fun" - "I want to be recognized" - "It's exciting" - "It makes me feel special" - "I want to make a lot of money" - and many others. All are valid reasons, but let's take a look at that last one...."I want to make a lot of money."

Certainly millionaires are made in "Show Biz", but I know no truly successful actor who's intention for becoming an actor was to "Get Rich". The money they've made was simply a by-product of a need or desire to perform. Think about it; why would anyone in their right mind want to go into a profession that has 97% unemployment at all times?

For example, there are approximately 120,000 members of the Screen Actors Guild. Sure, there are a few George Clooneys, Angelina Jolies, and Brad Pitts who make $10 or $20 million per picture, but less than 5% of the SAG members make as much as $50,000 per year. About 80% make less than $5,000 per year. Most of those in between are at what the government defines as poverty level! Now, don't let that stop you, because lightening does strike; people do get "discovered" - usually after years of hard work and study. I usually tell people "If there is anything else that you can do and be happy do it instead." However, if you have what I call that "defective gene" that robs you of your senses, if you are only really alive when you're on a stage or in from of a camera, then go for it! You'll never be truly happy until you at least try... I wasn't.

About choosing a class . . .

Although tuition for Charlie's classes at the Mosaic Acting Studio is very reasonable,  when deciding whom you want to study with there are a lot more things to consider than just the price.   The first thing I do is look up the instructor on IMDb.com.  That will tell me what they have actually done.   Do their credits consist of a couple of independent films that they wrote and/or directed?  Have they only been in "kid shows" on Nickelodeon or Disney?  Is their background only in theater?  I want to work with someone who has worked with major directors and has appeared with "A list" actors. There is a reason why Charlie Holliday has been voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors time after time.

Auditions Big Idea Theatre's Twelfth Night By William Shakespeare

Directed By Brian Harrower

Big Idea Theatre gives Shakespeare's classic cross-dressing comedy a modern twist. Set against the background of Mardi Gras in post-hurricane New Orleans, Twelfth Night is a riotous, fun-filled romp filled with drag queens, shipwrecked pirates, and lovesick counts. Let the good times roll!

Big Idea Theatre is recapturing the gender bending humor of the script as Shakespeare originally intended (or did he?) when men played women's roles, thus the role of Olivia will be played as a drag queen, Orsino and Malvolio will be gay men, and the role of Andrew Aguecheek has been adapted to Annie Aguecheek (Sir Toby's friend and lesbian).

Auditions will be held for this hilarious comedy at Big Idea Theatre on Saturday, August 20th at 1:00pm.

Callbacks will be at Big Idea Theatre on Saturday, August 27th at 12:00pm

Larry King thinks he's washed up as a writer. His wife recently left him in an attempt to shake him out of his depression. Now he's gone to a mountain cabin for a few weeks of peace and quiet and crossword puzzles. His wife, however, has other plans for him. She's hired some actors who've done bit parts on several soap operas. Her plan is for them to get him caught up in a crazy story they have concocted based on their experiences in the soaps. Keeping him confused is their objective and they seem to succeed for a while with situations that range from a potential suicide to a potential romantic escapade. Just when the wife thinks they've succeeded in rattling his cage, he turns the tables on them and (with a little help from the actors) convinces his wife that her plan may have gone awry.

Larry King: 40-50, supposedly depressed writer, the "target": cast

Sarah King: same age range, Larry's wife, the "schemer": cast

Director: Michael Messmer

Other information:  this is a fast-paced farce, requiring the soap opera actors to be totally sincere in their "over the top" story, you have to be really good to make bad acting work.

THE Actors' Workshop and Integral Theatre Company, Folsom - A stage adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma"

Emma is the story of Miss Emma Woodhouse, a well-to-do young woman in a small English town in 1815. After her governess, Miss Taylor, marries and becomes Mrs. Weston, Emma is left with her hypochondriac, hyper-concerned father as her sole companion. She therefore takes the poor, unconnected, yet gentle, Harriet under her wing. Emma's love of matchmaking leads her to meddle in Harriet's love life, and to set up some romantic misadventures of her own. A humorous, satirical work, where the plot is often secondary to the characters themselves. From the garrulous Miss Bates, to the querulous Mr Woodhouse, to the gallant Mr. Knightley and erratic Mr. Churchill, a fascinating example of Jane Austen's prowess with the English language.

Actors still needed for the roles of:

Mr. George Knightley,   a respected landowner, handsome and honest - age late 30's to 40's

Mrs. Anne Weston (Miss Taylor) - Formerly Miss Taylor, Emma's beloved governess and companion. Age mid 30's to 40's

Frank Churchill , a handsome, yet somewhat shallow man who pursues pleasure more than industry- age 20's+

After falling victim to unscrupulous neighbors and a dishonest lover, she is forced to create a fierce, manipulative, and efficient alter-ego - that of her strong-willed business-savvy male "cousin." Will the forces of capitalism overwhelm her, or will she maintain her goodness in a world of corruption?

The Sleeper

by Catherine Butterfield

Directed Margaret Morneau, co-founder and producer, Resurrection Theatre

Synopsis: A suburban "security mom," shell-shocked by the new post 9/11 reality, finds herself irresistibly drawn to her son's tutor, a handsome young man with political leanings far different from her own. Her "awakening" leads to a bizarre series of events that blow the lid off her previously sheltered existence and change the lives of all around her. A dark and slightly zany comedy.

Rehearsal Dates: Early September - Oct 22

Performance Dates: October 22 - November 19

Role Available:

Male Swing (1 male needed) - age 25-45. Great character part.

PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING SEPTEMBER 18
AT THE CALIFORNIA STAGE THEATRE:

At the Sunday, September 18, Playwrights Collaborative Meeting (7:00 PM) Scott Charles will discuss his recent experience with self producing his play, "Dinners With Augie." Come prepared with questions.
We will also read and discuss "Ethics," a short play by Ron Tochterman .

This workshop is at  the California Stage Theatre, 2509 "R" Street (on "R" Street between 25th and 26th Streets), Sacramento.

The Playwrights Collaborative thanks the California Stage Theater Company for the use of its theater.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com 916-383-9267 .  Please let me know if you would like to be removed from this list.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights.

"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere.  Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."

WORKSHOPS: At each workshop,  original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production.  Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area.  There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.
STAGED READINGS:  Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production.  A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.

Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works.  The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers.  Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.

The Playwrights Collaborative does not share its e-mail list information with anyone.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267).

From a Mosaic Acting Academy Student and Working Actress ...
Heather Pier
I recently made the switch to working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting business (just like any technology) changes happen fast.
The one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned out to be right on the money.  LA is a big and expensive move to make. Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes. He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid, up-to-date information that you can use.  -  Heather Pier

Shirt Logo             Mosaic Acting "Gear"
is now available!
Ladies polo People have been asking where to get the MOSAIC ACTING clothing articles with the beautifully embroidered logo I've been wearing - polo shirts, long sleeved Tees, hats, jackets, etc.
I get them from a company called Queensboro.  If you'd like to order something, go to the Queensboro web site and check them out.  When you find what you want, email the article number and color selection and size you want to me and I'll put together an order as soon as four of you give me payment for the items.  (I'll pay the shipping charges for you.)  You can mix and match items, and there's no minimum order for you.  Give me a call or email if you have any questions.  Thanks,
Charlie
