Greetings! |
A while back I got the following email from someone:
"Recently I got a call on my pager from a "management company". They wanted me to come in for an interview and to talk to me about representing me. When I asked the lady who answered their phone where they had gotten my name, she was rather evasive, and wouldn't give me a direct answer. I finally talked to a man who said they had probably gotten it from a casting director, although he couldn't say just where. He said they were interested in representing me and would like for me to come in for an interview. After pressing him for more information he finally said that there would be a fee of about $50 to register with them. I declined the offer, as I just didn't feel quite right about it. Did I do the right thing?"
The answer, of course was "Yes!"
First of all, none of the legitimate casting directors like Media Casting Group ever give out names or contact information to alleged managers, agents, or anyone else, with the possible exception of another casting director who is having trouble filling a role and might ask for assistance. Since he called your pager number, my guess is that he somehow obtained your resume. The first red flag is when anyone asks you for money. REAL AGENTS NEVER CHARGE A FEE FOR ANYTHING. Neither do real casting directors, with the possible exception of a small registration fee for non-union actors. Legitimate agents must be licensed by the state, and are paid a commission based on what the talent earns. (Agents that are franchised by the performers unions are limited to 10%.) Managers, on the other hand, are not governed by the unions that represent actors, nor are they licensed by the state. Therefore, be careful! There are many reputable managers out there, but unfortunately there are many more who's ethics are questionable at best. Watch out for people who say they are going to make you a "Star" for a fee. You become a star by becoming a good actor, and you become a good actor by studying and practicing your craft.

Acting on Camera for Kids
|
Charlie very rarely teaches children's classes at the Mosaic Acting Studio. Lately though, he's received many calls and e-mails from parents saying they've wasted sometimes thousands of dollars on worthless classes and pictures, and requesting some sort of kids class. There are lots of "sharks in the water," claiming they can "make your child a star . . . all they need is to take this class, or have these pictures done, etc." Others claim to offer professional training, but have never worked as professional actors themselves. With that in mind, we are offering the following class for kids 8 -12 years old.
THE *MOSAIC ACTING STUDIO
(*Voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors)
PRESENTS
ACTING ON CAMERA FOR KIDS
4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
TUESDAYS, AUGUST 9th - 30th
At the Mosaic Acting Studio in Ranch Cordova
(Directions provided upon enrollment)
This entertaining and informative series will include:
Week 1 - Improvisation
This is one of the two most important skills an actor of any age must learn. It helps the student to relax, learn to think quickly, and adapt rapidly to new directions. And it's just plain fun!!
Week 2 - Auditioning for Commercials
The commercial audition is very different from others. Commercials are the quickest way to get started, and offer the most opportunities for young actors. The kids will learn how to slate properly, interpret copy, use cue cards and much more.
Week 3 - Auditioning for Movies and TV
Again, the Movie/TV audition is different than the commercial audition and very different than the stage audition. Unlike Theater auditions, which often request monologues, Movie and TV auditions don't generally use prepared memorized material.
In this part of the class, the kids will learn the proper slate, how to interpret copy, and create a character for the audition.
Week 4 - Scene Work
Students will learn to use facets of the Mosaic Acting System to perform a short scene on-camera with another student, and learn about different camera angles, eye-lines, sizes of shots, and much more.
A break with snacks for the kids will also be provided during each class,
as well as a "Wrap Party" at the end of the course. .
These interesting and entertaining classes are geared for youngsters from 8 through 12 years of age. So that each child will receive plenty of time on camera, enrollment is limited to a maximum of ten participants. The tuition also includes a counseling session with the student's parents addressing such topics as choosing the right pictures, obtaining work permits, selecting an agent, avoiding scams, and more.
Tuition is $200. To enroll, send your minimum $100 deposit to:
Mosaic Acting
PO Box 1142
Rancho Cordova, CA 95741-1142
or to register with your VISA, MasterCard, or PayPal account click here:or call Charlie at 916.361.0952.
*These workshops are for educational purposes only. Participation in a casting director workshop rarely results in further contact with the casting director and is not a valid method of obtaining work as an actor. The presence of a casting director does not in any way guarantee future work or auditions.*

About choosing a class . . .
Although tuition for Charlie's classes at the Mosaic Acting Studio is very reasonable, when deciding whom you want to study with there are a lot more things to consider than just the price. The first thing I do is look up the instructor on IMDb.com. That will tell me what they have actually done. Do their credits consist of a couple of independent films that they wrote and/or directed? Have they only been in "kid shows" on Nickelodeon or Disney? Is their background only in theater? I want to work with someone who has worked with major directors and has appeared with "A list" actors. There is a reason why Charlie Holliday has been voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors time after time.

Help Acting community, I need some extras for a zombie film this Saturday from 10-4pm just for a picnic scene, Family types. No zombies here. Sunday from 10am to 6pm, zombies and victims. Please message me on facebook if you are interested.
OK, so I may be looking for two roles to be filled. Female lead and a male counter lead. looking for a athletic male, military/police type. I want to see what is out there, to have choices. I am going to offer the lead to two other people first, do a audition for them and we will go from there. But I want to be able to have fall backs if it doesnt work out. The male role, is just a scheduling issue. It happens, the current guy is a great actor and a great person. Things just happen with scheduling sometimes, no big deal. I am sure we will work together again soon. So please if you are a good dramatic/action actor/actress please send your information my way. Thanks.

Looking to cast a male actor for our 10x10 piece. 28-35 years old. Until we know what we're working on, it's kind of hard to cast a character. But for what I have in mind is someone who is athletic and can explode into movement. I know that's vague, but doesn't it sound interesting? :) It'll be a fun piece regardless. Our team currently consists of Brian Caylor, Yinique Myo-Flores, Amresh Gosai and Miles David Fargo.

+++++++++++++ PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING AUGUST 14 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights. "The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere. Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed." WORKSHOPS: At each workshop, original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production. Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area. There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater. STAGED READINGS: Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production. A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts. Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works. The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers. Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present. For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267).That's it for now.- I'll see you in the lobby! Charlie |

From a Mosaic Acting Academy Student and Working Actress ...
|
I recently made the switch to
working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from
local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and
strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the
advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps
they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting
business (just like any technology) changes happen fast. The
one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor
with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned
out to be right on the money. LA is a big and expensive move to make.
Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes.
He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid,
up-to-date information that you can use. - Heather Pier

Mosaic Acting "Gear"
is now available!

People have been asking where to get the MOSAIC ACTING clothing articles with the beautifully embroidered logo I've been wearing - polo shirts, long sleeved Tees, hats, jackets, etc. I get them from a company called Queensboro. If you'd like to order something, go to the Queensboro web site and check them out. When you find what you want, email the
article number and color selection and size you want to me and I'll put
together an order as soon as four of you give me payment for the
items. (I'll pay the shipping charges for you.) You can mix and match
items, and there's no minimum order for you. Give me a call or email
if you have any questions. Thanks, Charlie |
