Voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors

Auditions, Announcements, and Other News
for June 11, 2011
Greetings!
Alyssa Montalbano

Here are some audition announcements for you.
I'll have more news for you later, but I'm in a time crunch right now.

Charlie

But now, a word from our sponsors, and some news.

A Very Special Seminar To  Be Presented in Lodi

So You Want to Be In The Movies . . .

Are you ready for Hollywood?

You've probably seen or heard the ads from so-called "Talent Agents" or "Management Companies" telling how they were gonna make you a star... Well, be careful, folks.  There are sharks in the waters!  Don't spend hundreds or (maybe thousands) of dollars on unnecessary photography, or for "acting lessons" from unqualified teachers who aren't even in the business.

Instead, come spend some time with working professional actor and Screen Actors Guild member Charlie Holliday.  He'll answer your questions about how "The Business" really works and what it really takes to get started as a motion picture and television actor.

You'll hear the truth about:

★ How to get a good headshot, how much you should spend for one, and where to find the right photographer.  (If you have a headshot, bring it for evaluation.)

★ What does a real talent agent do?  How do they get paid, and how much?

★ What is the function of a legitimate casting director?  What are they allowed to do - and not allowed to do?

★ What about talent management companies?  Do you need a manager?

★ What is the proper format for an acting resume? (There is a right way to do one.)

★ Should you get into the performer's unions, and how can you join?

★ How much difference is there between acting for stage and acting for camera?

★ How to avoid the scam artists that prey on aspiring actors.

★ Any other questions you may have.

SPACE IS LIMITED, SO REGISTER NOW!
(This special seminar is for actors 12 years of age and older.  Parents of performers under 12 years of age should also attend.)
WHEN: June 20 at 7:00 PM
WHERE: Lodi Location TBA
(We'll be sending another email as soon as the location is secured.)
TUITION: Only $25

To register, send your check or money order to:

Mosaic Acting, PO Box 1142, Rancho Cordova, CA 95741.Or to register on line with your credit card or PayPal (3% service charge)

About choosing a class . . .

Although tuition for Charlie's classes at the Mosaic Acting Studio is very reasonable,  when deciding whom you want to study with there are a lot more things to consider than just the price.   The first thing I do is look up the instructor on IMDb.com.  That will tell me what they have actually done.   Do their credits consist of a couple of independent films that they wrote and/or directed?  Have they only been in "kid shows" on Nickelodeon or Disney?  Is their background only in theater?  I want to work with someone who has worked with major directors and has appeared with "A list" actors. There is a reason why Charlie Holliday has been voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors time after time.

Casting for the 2011 PCS winning script "Buddies."

We are completing our casting of the film, but we still haven't found

our lead male actor yet. We need a male, age 25-40, who is in excellent

physical condition. Here's the synopsis:

Brad returns from Iraq only to lose his girlfriend. Depressed,

nothing seems to help until a gift re-opens his heart and reminds

him that sometimes you need a little help from your friends.

Actors interested in the role should email a headshot and resume

to me:

 Also, my cell is

530-383-1711

We also need an apartment or house in the midtown Sacramento

area to shoot many interior scenes. Thank you!

Sorry for the late notice, I thought I had covered all my grounds last week as far as getting the word out on my auditions for "Piecework", a short film I am doing for my senior project.
Here is the logline of the story and general character info.

RAY, a 43 year old recently divorced man who lives life out in the country finds himself bleeding on a hospital gurney, remembering important events in his life up to the event of him being shot.

Characters

Ray

42 years old. Born in the country, will always be in the country and is perfectly content with living a simple life out where he's always been. He enjoys the little things in life. Grew up with a strict father, that's where he learned to take pride in his work and his mom died when he was young. He is lonely, his wife has left him and his daughter barely knows him. He finds solitude and refuge in his work. Looking for housing and work he bunks up with an old man who allows him to stay in his house as long as he fixes the place up. He doesn't always know how to express how he feels or his emotions. Man of few words, but thinks a lot.. almost always talking to himself, thinking. Very cerebral. You might say he has a lack of ambition to be something greater than he is, but Ray doesn't have a problem with that.

What does he want?

Externally, he just wants to have some kind of role in his daughter's life.

Internally, he just doesn't want to be alone.

Flaws: Lack of emotional expression/ambition, aloofness, indifference

Breaking Point: When he finds out he isn't the father.

Sandra

Ray's ex-wife and mother his child. 35 Years old, but is beautiful and looks young for her age. She is very ambitious and wants better things in life and feels entitled to this. She loved Ray because he is a good, honest man. A decent human being, but she wanted more. This is also influenced by the fact that her parents HATE Ray. And years of persuasion from them have taken a toll. But the biggest factor in the Rift between her and Ray is the fact that she has been keeping a secret, the secret is that Ray is not the father of her child. She grew up in the upper-middle class of the countryside. Parents are loving, but pretentious. She is very emotional and sometimes acts on emotional rather than rationality.

Old Man Dodge

Joe is 72 years old. He's an old timer. Lives by himself on his small farm. He, like Ray, is lonely. He is in great shape for his age, but could use some help around the farm. Ray fulfills both needs. Joe has a sense of humor of a man who's been in the military. He loves finding humor in every day situations and loves discovering life's small ironies. His wife died 12 years ago.  He and Ray become great friends.

Keegan

Ronny is 32 years old. He is bliss's new boyfriend. He grew up in and out of half-way houses and he is not educated. He is very insecure about his intelligence and how he was brought up. He was a troubled kid. Now as an adult he is very immature, cocky and arrogant, and in general not a very nice person to people he doesn't know or like. He is not afraid of confrontation and as they say, if your gonna be dumb, you better be tough. And he is. He has a quick temper and sometimes he can't control it and will do some very dumb , sometimes violent acts. He doesn't think about the repercussions of his actions. Ronny is an asshole. And he's unpredictable, that's why Bliss likes him, total opposite of Ray.

Hi all, I rarely ever do this but desperate times call for desperate measures. We at MSTW are embarking on a wonderful season, which includes opening with the fabulous farce, "A Flea in Her Ear". If you're not familiar with the play, it involves a large and somewhat complicated set. That's where you (hopefully) come in. We are in desperate need of people to help with construction. We have lost a couple of our key helpers and are struggling to get enough bodies to put it all together before we open June 17th. If you can swing a hammer, paint, etc, we could really use your help. If you can spare a few hours, or a few days, please contact Ken Stefferud at [email protected], or Susan McCandless at [email protected].

All workers will be fed and comped tickets to our summer season. If you can't personally help us, you can help by getting the word out. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

Most sincerely,Julie

MAY 22 PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING AT THE LAMBDA PLAYERS THEATRE:

On Sunday, May 22 at 7:00 PM, Playwrights Collaborative will read and discuss  Letha Dawson's "Motown Casinos."  This is a musical filled with skepticism, hope, love, and determination. It takes place in Detroit in the 1990's.  Clashing values focus on creating jobs by building casinos.

This workshop is at the Lambda Players Theatre, 1127 21st Street, in Sacramento.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights.

"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere.  Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."

WORKSHOPS: At each workshop,  original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production.  Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area.  There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.

STAGED READINGS:  Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production.  A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.

Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works.  The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers.  Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at [email protected] (916-383-9267).

From a Mosaic Acting Academy Student and Working Actress ...
Heather Pier
I recently made the switch to working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting business (just like any technology) changes happen fast.
The one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned out to be right on the money.  LA is a big and expensive move to make. Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes. He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid, up-to-date information that you can use.  -  Heather Pier
