Mosaic Acting Academy
Voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors

Auditions, Announcements, and Other News
for June 1, 2011
Greetings!

More Questions from the internet . . .

Hello Charlie,
I am an actor just starting out in Sacramento. I was wondering what you would suggest I do first? Should I join a class or just start showing up to auditions?  Should I move to San Francisco or LA or should I try to get experience here in Sacramento first?
Can I use any headshot from a digital camera or is important to get a professional picture done?  Thank you for your time.
L.G.

Thanks for your questions, L.G.
Just showing up at auditions without really knowing how to audition probably isn't the best idea. People remember their first impression of you for a long time, and if you aren't prepared, it can take a long time to get back to see them again.  You need some experience before hitting the "big city." Partly for the same reason as stated above. To go to LA without being in the Screen Actors Guild makes it about 50 times harder to get any work, or an agent, etc.  Don't be in a hurry!
The single most important tool an actor has is a good headshot. Spend the money to get a good one. I can make some recommendations.  You can contact me at charlie@charlieactor.com, or there are a couple of links to good photographers on my web site www.charlieactor.com.

But now, a word from our sponsors, and some news.

A Very Special Seminar To  Be Presented in Lodi

So You Want to Be In The Movies . . .

Are you ready for Hollywood?

You've probably seen or heard the ads from so-called "Talent Agents" or "Management Companies" telling how they were gonna make you a star... Well, be careful, folks.  There are sharks in the waters!  Don't spend hundreds or (maybe thousands) of dollars on unnecessary photography, or for "acting lessons" from unqualified teachers who aren't even in the business.

Instead, come spend some time with working professional actor and Screen Actors Guild member Charlie Holliday.  He'll answer your questions about how "The Business" really works and what it really takes to get started as a motion picture and television actor.

You'll hear the truth about:

★ How to get a good headshot, how much you should spend for one, and where to find the right photographer.  (If you have a headshot, bring it for evaluation.)

★ What does a real talent agent do?  How do they get paid, and how much?

★ What is the function of a legitimate casting director?  What are they allowed to do - and not allowed to do?

★ What about talent management companies?  Do you need a manager?

★ What is the proper format for an acting resume? (There is a right way to do one.)

★ Should you get into the performer's unions, and how can you join?

★ How much difference is there between acting for stage and acting for camera?

★ How to avoid the scam artists that prey on aspiring actors.

★ Any other questions you may have.

SPACE IS LIMITED, SO REGISTER NOW!
(This special seminar is for actors 12 years of age and older.  Parents of performers under 12 years of age should also attend.)
WHEN: 7:00 PM
WHERE: Lodi Location TBA
(We'll be sending another email as soon as the location is secured.)
TUITION: Only $25

To register, send your check or money order to:

About choosing a class . . .

Although tuition for Charlie's classes at the Mosaic Acting Studio is very reasonable,  when deciding whom you want to study with there are a lot more things to consider than just the price.   The first thing I do is look up the instructor on IMDb.com.  That will tell me what they have actually done.   Do their credits consist of a couple of independent films that they wrote and/or directed?  Have they only been in "kid shows" on Nickelodeon or Disney?  Is their background only in theater?  I want to work with someone who has worked with major directors and has appeared with "A list" actors. There is a reason why Charlie Holliday has been voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors time after time.

Synopsis and Supporting Character Breakdown for "The Reaching"

Synopsis -

Elouise is a small town girl that has returned home from the big city to take care of her ill grandmother and move into her mother's childhood home. Her job at the local watering hole is a mundane task daily seeing to the few towns people that come in regularly. Suddenly, she starts to think her mind is playing tricks on her after a terrible car accident changes her perception of reality forever. When in fact, reality has only just begun to take it's toll on her in this dark, demented, psychological thriller in the woods of northern California.

Characters Needed:

Grammy - A little old lady who moves just as slowly as the small town she grew up in so many years ago. She resents Elouise having to take care of her, and shows it daily. She has long straggly grey hair that generally doesn't seem washed.

Running Woman - Mid 30's good looking brunette. Scared, and confused as she runs for her life.

Frank - A mid 60's man who loves his wife, but not enough to stop drinking every day at the local bar despite also being the only tow truck driver in the entire county. He's a nice old man, but also knows something isn't right in this small town.

Police Officer - Friendly, shy, nervous cop who takes his job seriously, sometimes too seriously. He's a mid to late 20's fairly good looking guy that has had a crush on Elouise for some time.

"The Collector" - A 40's man, pale, short black/dark brown hair in a black suit from the early 1900's. He is very sure of himself, very precise, calm, and low-tempered.

Collector's Wife - A mid 40's woman, pale, long brunette hair, does not speak, but very calm and collected, dressed in a pale, burnt wedding gown.

Collector's Daughter - An early teen girl, pale, long brunette hair, does not speak, but very calm and collected, and dressed in a pale, burnt dress generally used for funerals in the early 1900's.

Collector's Son - An early teen boy, pale, short dark hair, dressed in an early 1900's black suit with a look of pure terror.

Old Men at Bar 1/2/3 - Three random older men who just won't go home!

Now he's gone to a mountain cabin for a few weeks of peace and quiet and crossword puzzles. His wife, however, has other plans for him. She's hired some actors who've done bit parts on several soap operas. Her plan is for them to get him caught up in a crazy story they have concocted based on their experiences in the soaps. Keeping him confused is their objective and they seem to succeed for a while with situations that range from a potential suicide to a potential romantic escapade. Just when the wife thinks they've succeeded in rattling his cage, he turns the tables on them and (with a little help from the actors) convinces his wife that her plan may have gone awry.

plot:

Jeff is a financial analyst whose wealth brings him no satisfaction. In fact, the closer he got to marrying into a wealthy family, the more unhappy he became. His fiancée (Tiffany) dumped him with the warning that he'd better get his head straight. He's come to see the wiseman of the mountain in hope of finding, if not the meaning of life, at least a clue as to why he's on this quest. The wiseman (Fred) is nothing like anyone's idea of a guru. He's sarcastic, likes the good things in life, has his own stock portfolio and has some very weird ways of looking at the world. His new protégé (Angela) seems to find Jeff a soul-mate which leads to a passionate encounter just as Tiffany shows up to save Jeff from joining what she thinks might be a cult. Aided (and frequently, challenged) by his new protégé (who is also a popular psychologist) Fred puts Jeff through an ordeal that leads Jeff to understand what is really important in his life. Major philosophical systems are assaulted as frequently as the characters assault each other.

Cast:

Angela: female, 40's, psychologist seeking answers and playing games

Fred: male 40's-50's, the wiseman, provocative, pushy, irritating

Jeff: male, 26-36, financial analyst, seeking answers

Hi all, I rarely ever do this but desperate times call for desperate measures. We at MSTW are embarking on a wonderful season, which includes opening with the fabulous farce, "A Flea in Her Ear". If you're not familiar with the play, it involves a large and somewhat complicated set. That's where you (hopefully) come in. We are in desperate need of people to help with construction. We have lost a couple of our key helpers and are struggling to get enough bodies to put it all together before we open June 17th. If you can swing a hammer, paint, etc, we could really use your help. If you can spare a few hours, or a few days, please contact Ken Stefferud at ineng@volcano.net, or Susan McCandless at susanmccandless@hotmail.com.

All workers will be fed and comped tickets to our summer season. If you can't personally help us, you can help by getting the word out. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

Most sincerely,Julie

MAY 22 PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING AT THE LAMBDA PLAYERS THEATRE:

On Sunday, May 22 at 7:00 PM, Playwrights Collaborative will read and discuss  Letha Dawson's "Motown Casinos."  This is a musical filled with skepticism, hope, love, and determination. It takes place in Detroit in the 1990's.  Clashing values focus on creating jobs by building casinos.

This workshop is at the Lambda Players Theatre, 1127 21st Street, in Sacramento.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights.

"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere.  Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."

WORKSHOPS: At each workshop,  original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production.  Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area.  There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.

STAGED READINGS:  Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production.  A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.

Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works.  The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers.  Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267).

I recently made the switch to working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting business (just like any technology) changes happen fast.
The one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned out to be right on the money.  LA is a big and expensive move to make. Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes. He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid, up-to-date information that you can use.  -  Heather Pier
