Greetings! |
Last time we wrote about how handling rejection is one of the most difficult tasks that we as actors must face. I promised to give you
a few tips about how to deal with not winning the audition . . .
1. Consider the audition as a job. Just go in and do the best job that you are capable of that day. ( and some days you are better that others!) 2. After the audition don't spend more that five minutes beating yourself up about what you shoulda-woulda-coulda done. I don't know about you, but my best auditions are always in the car on my way home. Forget about it. You did what you did, and there are only two possibilities - you'll either get the job or you won't. Hopefully your next "job" will be the call-back, or better yet, they'll book you right from the first audition. Which ever it is, just go in and do the best job you can - for that day. 3. Use what ever you did, right or wrong, as a learning experience. That makes every audition good, and that way you always win. Remember, its not really about you or your talent. Most of the time with commercials it's a matter of being what they are looking for, combined with the ability to do the job. The best that you can do is to be prepared (study and learn!), professional (on time, with a proper head shot and resume), and pleasant ( Relax and have fun...who wants to work someone who is nervous and uptight? Remember, as casting directors we are on your side. We want you to be good. Everybody is on your side until you give them a reason not to be. I hope you keep this in mind at your next audition.
But now, a word from our sponsors, and some news.

About choosing a class . . .
Although tuition for Charlie's classes at the Mosaic Acting studio is very reasonable, when deciding whom you want to study with there are a lot more things to consider than just the price. The first thing I do is look up the instructor on IMDb.com. That will tell me what they have actually done. Do their credits consist of a couple of independent films that they wrote and/or directed? Have they only been in "kid shows" on Nickelodeon or Disney? Is their background only in theater? I want to work with someone who has worked with major directors and has appeared with "A list" actors. There is a reason why Charlie Holliday has been voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors time after time.

+++++++++++ The Screen Actors Guild has taken a huge step forward down the path toward merger with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. The guild's national board of directors voted unanimously on Saturday to create a merger task force to work with AFTRA. The board's resolution instructed the task force "to meet with representatives of AFTRA as soon as practicable, but no later than June 2011, to initiate the development of a plan to create a successor union formed from the best elements of both SAG and AFTRA." SAG president Ken Howard will lead the task force. +++++++++++++

Chinese TV Series 'Gold Mountain' to Be Filmed in SF By: Summer Chiang, New America Media A new Chinese TV series about Chinese immigrants to the U.S. during the Gold Rush will be filmed in San Francisco, reports the Sing Tao Daily. The series is called "Gold Mountain," which in Chinese has the same pronunciation as "San Francisco." Southern Media Corporation (SMC), a television network based in China's Guangzhou province, is filming the drama series in May and June in the Bay Area. SMC Secretary Bai Ling told the Sing Tao that the script is done and the crew is ready to start filming the 30-episode series. The Chinese TV network will also be announcing ways for locals can be extras in the show. Southern Media Corporation came to the Bay Area last July to check out shooting locations, look for funders, and meet with local cultural scholars at the San Francisco Chinese Culture Center. The series has been called a major cultural project in Guangdong province, and the production costs are expected to be much higher than those of other Chinese TV shows. The drama series is centered on the story of Cantonese immigrants who go to San Francisco during the Gold Rush near the end of China's Qing Dynasty, in what was considered the first large-scale immigration of Chinese to the U.S. The main character, who comes here looking for gold, starts as a small businessman. He then becomes a servant for a white family, a Pacific Railway construction worker, and finally becomes a successful businessman. His personal experience mirrors the experience of many Chinese who came to the United States in search of "Gold Mountain." ++++++++++++++

Barely out of his teens when he was appointed head of the House of Dior, he triumphantly launched his own brand only a few short years later. For decades he epitomized the jet-set lifestyle, dressing its luminaries and sharing their giddy excesses. Visual artist Pierre Thoretton's first feature captures the well-known highs and lows of this remarkable but also stormy career: Yves Saint Laurent l'Amour Fou documents a crazy love for all things beautiful. +++++++++++++ MAY 22 PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING AT THE LAMBDA PLAYERS THEATRE: On Sunday, May 22 at 7:00 PM, Playwrights Collaborative will read and discuss Letha Dawson's "Motown Casinos." This is a musical filled with skepticism, hope, love, and determination. It takes place in Detroit in the 1990's. Clashing values focus on creating jobs by building casinos. This workshop is at the Lambda Players Theatre, 1127 21st Street, in Sacramento. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights. "The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere. Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed." WORKSHOPS: At each workshop, original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production. Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area. There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater. STAGED READINGS: Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production. A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts. Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works. The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers. Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present. For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267).That's it for now.- I'll see you in the lobby! Charlie |

From a Mosaic Acting Academy Student and Working Actress ...
|
I recently made the switch to
working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from
local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and
strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the
advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps
they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting
business (just like any technology) changes happen fast. The
one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor
with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned
out to be right on the money. LA is a big and expensive move to make.
Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes.
He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid,
up-to-date information that you can use. - Heather Pier

People have been asking where to get the MOSAIC ACTING clothing articles with the beautifully embroidered logo I've been wearing - polo shirts, long sleeved Tees, hats, jackets, etc. I get them from a company called Queensboro. If you'd like to order something, go to the Queensboro web site and check them out. When you find what you want, email the
article number and color selection and size you want to me and I'll put
together an order as soon as four of you give me payment for the
items. (I'll pay the shipping charges for you.) You can mix and match
items, and there's no minimum order for you. Give me a call or email
if you have any questions. Thanks, Charlie |
