Greetings! |
Handling rejection is one of the most difficult tasks that we as actors must face. I think the desire to be accepted is one of the things that attracts many of us to this business - I know it was for me. I was this skinny, red-haired, freckle-faced little Irish kid who wore glasses and wasn't a bit athletic. Somehow I mustered up the courage to appear in a school talent show with a comedy act, and afterward I found that I had become sort of "special." I received a degree of recognition and acceptance that I had never known before, and that's the bottom line for many of the actors I know - we need recognition and acceptance, for whatever reason.
So how do you deal with a business (and I keep emphasizing that this is a business) where the odds may be as high as one hundred to one against you? That's what the average commercial actor faces - ninety-nine "Nos" for every "Yes." Most of the time you never know why, because they don't call you when you don't get the job to tell you that you were too old/young/fat/thin/tall/short/ black/white/yellow/brown or any of a myriad of other reasons why you just weren't what they were looking for. Not long ago I had the good fortune to do a Maxwell House Coffee commercial and one of the actresses with whom I worked put it about as well as I ever heard it said. "If they are looking for chocolate cake and you look enough like chocolate cake, you have a chance." She was right; you may be the best angel food cake in the world, but if they want chocolate, you just won't get the job. It isn't only true of commercials, either. I almost lost a very good co-starring role in mini-series because almost everyone else in the cast was very tall. It had nothing at all to do with my ability as an actor.
If all this is true (and it is!) what can you do to maintain your sanity and sense of self worth? Next newsletter I'll give you a few tips . . .
But now, a word from our sponsors, and some news.

Special Audition Skills Workshop
|
The Last Media Casting Group's Audition Skills Workshop was a big success!
Media Casting Group
Presents
A Special Audition Skills Workshop
WHEN: 1:00 PM - 4 PM
SUNDAY, MAY 1
The Mosaic Acting Studio
(directions provided upon enrollment)
The audition process for motion pictures and television is very different from that for theater, or even commercials. Come spend an afternoon with the casting directors from Sacramento's leading casting company, Media Casting Group. (www.MediaCastingGroup.com) Media Casting Group has cast thousands of principals and extras in over 400 projects in the Northern California area, from major motion pictures like Phenomenon and Mad City to mini-series like Gone But Not Forgotten and movies-of-the-week like The Christmas Card and Out of the Woods.
First you'll have the opportunity to go through the audition process, using movie and TV scripts that will be provided. After your cold reading, you'll be given a written evaluation of your headshot, resume, and audition skills in five different areas with suggestions on how to improve your skills.
The afternoon will then feature a question and answer session where you'll have a chance to ask those burning questions about the "dos and don'ts" of the audition process.
What's the most important tool and actor has?
What's the biggest mistake actors make at the audition?
What's the biggest mistake actors make during a cold reading?
What are the casting directors really looking for?
Sound exciting? Then give yourself a present and reserve your spot now, as space is limited!
HOW TO REGISTER:
The tuition is only $60 and you can enroll on line by clicking here, or you can mail your check to Enrollments, PO Box 1142, Rancho Cordova CA 95741-1142, or register by phone at 916-361-0952.

About choosing a class . . .
Although tuition for Charlie's classes at the Mosaic Acting studio is very reasonable, when deciding whom you want to study with there are a lot more things to consider than just the price. The first thing I do is look up the instructor on IMDb.com. That will tell me what they have actually done. Do their credits consist of a couple of independent films that they wrote and/or directed? Have they only been in "kid shows" on Nickelodeon or Disney? Is their background only in theater? I want to work with someone who has worked with major directors and has appeared with "A list" actors. There is a reason why Charlie Holliday has been voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors time after time.

Three New Shows At Sutter Street Theatre in Historic Old Folsom
Now Playing -- Nunsense
Winner of four Outer Circle Critics Awards including Best Off Broadway Musical in it's original New York production. The show is a fund raiser put on by the Little Sisters of Hoboken to raise money to bury Sisters accidently poisened by the convent cook, Sister Julis (Child of God). This zany musical is a hit wherever it plays.
Friday & Saturday at 8:00pm and Sunday at 4:00pm
Now Playing -- Noodle Doodle Box
Noodle Doodle Box is a delightfully absurd play for young children. It is about two clowns, Zacharias and Pepper, who are constantly squabbling, both verbally and physically. Then along comes the mysterious Drum Major, a trickster who makes the clowns re-evaluate their friendship. Lessons about authority and relationships are portrayed with wacky slapstick comedy that appeals to young children - and will delight all ages!
Saturday at 4:00pm
Opening April 2 -- 13 The Musical
When his parents get divorced and Evan Goldman is forced to move from New York to a small town in Indiana, he just wants to make friends and survive the school year; easier said than done. The star quarterback is threatening to ruin his life and his only friend, Patrice, won't talk to him. The school freak sees an opportunity for blackmail and someone is spreading the nastiest rumors.
13 is a show that deals with issues readily familiar to high school students. Hilarious and high-energy. 13 teaches valuable lessons about growing pains and what exactly it means to be "cool." Whether it be freaks, geeks or dealing with divorce, the show is relevant to high school students everywhere.

From a Mosaic Acting Academy Student and Working Actress ...
|
I recently made the switch to
working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from
local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and
strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the
advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps
they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting
business (just like any technology) changes happen fast. The
one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor
with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned
out to be right on the money. LA is a big and expensive move to make.
Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes.
He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid,
up-to-date information that you can use. - Heather Pier

Mosaic Acting "Gear"

People have been asking where to get the MOSAIC ACTING clothing articles with the beautifully embroidered logo I've been wearing - polo shirts, long sleeved Tees, hats, jackets, etc. I get them from a company called Queensboro. If you'd like to order something, go to the Queensboro web site and check them out. When you find what you want, email the
article number and color selection and size you want to me and I'll put
together an order as soon as four of you give me payment for the
items. (I'll pay the shipping charges for you.) You can mix and match
items, and there's no minimum order for you. Give me a call or email
if you have any questions. Thanks, Charlie |
