Mosaic Acting Academy
Voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors

Auditions, Announcements, and Other News
for December 22
Greetings!
Alyssa Montalbano

Would you believe, I've been trying to get this out since Thanksgiving!

More about "The Character"

In the last couple of newsletters I started explaining what I call "Charlie's Big Five," a tool to help build a life for the character you'll be portraying.  The first question I ask is "Who am  I?" ,"I" being the character.  Every character has a history, actually a network of histories.  The first is Physical, which we touched on lat time.  As a character you also have an Intellectual history.  What kind of education do you (as character) have?  Did you drop out of high school or do you have a PHD?  That will affect things like your grammar, interactions with those with ore or less education than you have, and more.  There's a big difference in a character who says "It don't mean nothing"  and one who says "It doesn't mean anything."  The latter is obviously better educated than the one who doesn't know proper grammar. What kind of books do you read, if you read?  What kind of music, movies, TV shows do you prefer?   Those are all things that determine how you relate to others in the scene.  As you create your character, these are things you want to take into consideration.  Each character also has an Emotional history, but we'll get to that next time.

And now a word from our sponsors . . .

Learn from someone who has appeared in more than three dozen National Commercials! Nothing in show business, including movies, costs more money to make, minute for minute, than a national commercial. And nothing pays better! Members of the Screen Actors Guild earn more each year from commercials than from movies and television combined. This class will cover all the aspects of the commercial audition, from getting the call from the agent or casting director, to the right headshot, copy analysis, working with cue cards, the ear-prompter, the call-back, and  more.

Spinning Movie Reel
It's usually a bit slow this time of year, but here's what's happening . . . If you know of anything going on, let me know and I'll post it.

"The Screen Actors Guild has reached a tentative agreement with producers on new contracts for theatrical productions, prime time television, television animation and basic-cable live-action television, the guild announced today. Negotiations between SAG and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers began Monday, the day after an agreement was reached between the AMPTP and negotiators for SAG and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists on new contracts for theatrical film and prime-time network television."

This is good news for all of us, union or not.  It means that for the next three years the producers don't have to worry about the threat of a strike, so they have no hesitation to start new productions.  Now if the state and cities will come up with some decent production incentives, so we can compete with other states, there should be more work for us all!

Big News From the Sac Film & Music Fest

We're changing our format from a single, 10-day long Festival in the Summer to two shorter Festivals in the Winter and Summer: Our new Sacramento Film & Music Festival WINTERFEST and SUMMERFEST!

The new approach allows us to maintain our programming capacity and better allow audiences and filmmakers to attend an entire event, from beginning to end, rather than just seeing a portion of a longer 10-day lineup. We think that's a lot more rewarding and we hope you agree.

We'll start off the new pattern during the January holiday weekend; January 15th-17th, 2011. See you there!

For filmmakers: The Sacramento Film & Music Festival WINTERFEST call for submissions is active on WITHOUTABOX and we have multiple deadlines that run through November 29th, 2010.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Thornton Wilder crafted this groundbreaking satiric fantasy that follows the extraordinary Antrobus family down through the ages, from the time of "The War," surviving flood, fire, pestilence, locusts, the ice age, the pox, and the double feature, a dozen subsequent wars and as many depressions. Short Center Rep opens new comedy in January

Friends , A rare opportunity this coming month to see the premiere of our first new full length work in 3 years.  This is a two-person dark comedy that is both touching and hilarious.  For our fans of previous productions, the play stars Brian Hillebert, who was last seen as the title role in "Gilgamesh", and Regina Brink who played Shamhat, the priestess who initiates Einkidu.   This time they appear as Bob and Betsy, two aging vaudevillians who are waiting for "that call" from their agent--(all actors can identify!). Meanwhile they entertain each other and us with their offstage and onstage relationship.
Check out our facebook page at Short Center Repertory, and become a fan, it has a complete history of the rehearsals and photos, and we keep it up to date with last minute developments.

Please make reservations, this is a 29 seat theatre and we will sell out many nights, particularly later in the month. And of course we'd appreciate the support on opening weekend, January 7,8 and 9, to kick off the run with a good start; but we do play weekends throughout January, with American Sign Language performances on Jan 15 and 29.
And please pass this on to your friends.

Here's the info in a nutshell:  The Short Center Repertory, a renowned company of actors with disabilities, will premiere it's production of "Extensions" by Murray Schisgal at California Stage (Threepenny Playhouse in mid-town Sacramento). Opening night is Friday, January 7th at 8p.m. - continuing Friday and Saturday evenings, and Sunday matinees through the month of January. 'Extensions' is a dark comedy dealing with issues of identity, aging, and relationship. Tickets are $15. Seating is limited. Make reservations by calling California Stage: (916) 451-5822. Three Penny Playhouse is located at 1715 25th St. (25th and R).

JANUARY 9 PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING AT THE
LAMBDA PLAYERS THEAT
RE:

On Sunday, January 9, at 7:00 p.m., Playwrights Collaborative will read and discuss Leo McElroy's one act "Apocalypse Rising." Ten very different people are trapped on an elevator together and reach very startling conclusions about their situations.
Scott Charles' short play "The Glass Slipper Poker" will also be read.  An Eastern European family is displaced from their ancestral home and finds their new country confusing and intimidating.

This workshop is at the Lambda Players Theatre, 1127 21st Street, in Sacramento.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267) .  Please let me know if you would like to be removed from this list.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays at 7:00 PM on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights.

"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere.  Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."

WORKSHOPS: At each workshop,  original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production.  Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area.  There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.

STAGED READINGS:  Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production.  A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.

Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works.  The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers.  Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.

From a Mosaic Acting Academy Student and Working Actress ...
Heather Pier
I recently made the switch to working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting business (just like any technology) changes happen fast.
The one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned out to be right on the money.  LA is a big and expensive move to make. Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes. He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid, up-to-date information that you can use.  -  Heather Pier
