Mosaic Acting Academy
Voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors

Auditions, Announcements, and Other Info
for June 3
Greetings!
Alyssa Montalbano

Frequently I'm asked about the difference between an agent and a casting director. Have you ever heard the term "casting agent?" That would be like like calling someone a "defending prosecutor"  There's no such thing. Agents represent the actors and negotiate on their behalf, and are paid by the actor. A casting director is somebody who is not biased, and is paid by the production company to cast the project. There should never be any money paid by actors to the casting director, with the exception of a small fee to register on a web site.  The real function of a casting director is to create the characters with the producer and director, conduct the interview and call-back, negotiate within the budget from the production company (that's a biggie!) with the agent, or with the talent directly if there is no agent. Most of the time casting directors do the actors contracts and cast clearances, and the Taft-Hartleys when needed. Basically, casting directors sit on the fence between the production company and the actor, but  work for the production company and the agent works for the actor.  And remember, and agent never charges a fee for anything.  They work strictly on a commission, and are forbidden by state law to sell you pictures, classes, a listing in their "talent directory or on their web site. Any time an agent asks you for money run! They only get paid when you make money so here's hoping we all have to pay a ton of commissions soon!

THE *MOSAIC ACTING ACADEMY
Voted Sacramento's Outstanding Training Resource for Actors
PRESENTS

"ALPHA COLD-READING TECHNIQUE"

SATURDAYS FROM 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
JUNE 15 - JULY 10
(No class July 3rd.)

It's Simple . . . Good Cold-Readers get the job!

There are two skills and actor must learn in order to work in movies and TV - Cold Reading and Improvisation.  Unlike Theater auditions, which often request monologues, Movie and TV auditions don't generally use prepared memorized material. In this class you will learn a technique of the Mosaic Acting System that allows you to use the subjective mind to quickly create a character with depth and substance, rather than just trying to "learn the words". These same tools can then be used to create a character for Screen, Stage or any type of performance. As the class progresses, we cover cold reading and audition techniques, as well as scene and monologue work. As the class size is limited to a minimum of 8 and maximum of 12 new students, pre-registration by the Monday before the class is required. This class will be presented on four consecutive Saturdays from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Tuition is $300, and includes an audio CD. (Repeat fee for prior students $200)

To register, send your minimum $150 deposit to: Charlie Holliday, PO Box 1142, Rancho Cordova, CA 95741-1142, or to register with your Credit Card or PayPal account click here click here or call Charlie at 916-361-0952

SPECIAL ACTING FOR CAMERA CLASS

The first half of each class is spent explaining and practicing various special problems confronting the film/TV actor, such as: hitting the mark, finding your light, overlaps, set protocol, stunt work, etc. In the second half of each class, participants work from movie and TV scripts using those techniques. JUNE PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING
AT THE ARDEN PLAYHOUSE:

This is a one-time meeting at a new location because the Big Idea Theatre does not have a date available for us in June.  We will return to the Big Idea Theatre for a July 11 workshop.

At the Sunday, June 27, workshop, we will read and discuss short plays by 1. Leo McElroy: "GOING UP" takes place entirely in and around a department store elevator, as the operator interacts with a variety of unusual customers having their ups and downs and 2. Scott Charles: "Dinners With Augie. "Acts of Kindness Reconsidered as Transformational Allegory.  Arthur Valentine faces his last moments and examines his life.  In dying, and in what comes next, he comes to understand the nature of compassion.

The Arden Playhouse is at 5640 Roseville Road Suite D (near Watt Ave).   Click here for a Google Map and directions to Arden Playhouse.  (It is in the building in the background between West Coast Transmission and Tom Duffy Tile on Roseville Road near Palm.)    Also, check http://ardenplayhouse.com/

Workshops are monthly on Sundays at 7:00 PM on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights.

"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere.  Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."

WORKSHOPS: At each workshop,  original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production.  Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area.  There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.

STAGED READINGS:  Playwrights participating in the once-a-month Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production.  A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.

Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works.  The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers.  Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com

From a Mosaic Acting Academy Student and Working Actress ...
Heather Pier
I recently made the switch to working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting business (just like any technology) changes happen fast.
The one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned out to be right on the money.  LA is a big and expensive move to make. Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes. He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid, up-to-date information that you can use.  -  Heather Pier
