Rejection and the Audition Process
Part Two

Last newsletter, we began an article about dealing with rejection.  The first question I asked was, "Are you even being called in?" and gave a couple of reasons why you might not be.
1. The next question is "Are you getting the callback?"   If you're getting auditions, but not getting callbacks, the first thing you need to look at is your auditioning skills.  Directors and Casting Directors are looking for the "Three P's."  You need to be:
Punctual - We usually have a limited amount of time for each audition, and if you're late you can throw the whole schedule off .  You should show up a bit early, so you'll have time to catch her breath, fix your makeup, and adjust for any changes that may have been in the script.
Prepared - Are you nervous , or do you come into the room with confidence?  Lack of confidence usually boils down to two things: lack of knowledge or lack of preparation.  If you don't know what to expect or how to audition properly, you need to get into a class. (What a coincidence; I happen to teach one.)  If you know what to expect, and you've prepared properly, it will show.  You should dress to represent the character.  If the role is for a business person, don't show up in cutoffs and a tanktop.  You won't get the job.  You should have made some strong character choices . . . we aren't looking for actors, we're looking for someone who can bring us the character.
Professional - it's amazing how unprofessional some actors are.  They show up late for the audition, without a headshot and resume, and sometimes don't even know what role they're supposed to audition for.  They don't conduct themselves properly in the waiting room, and once inside don't know how to do proper slate, where to look, or even to stay on the mark.  They've obviously never been trained or have been trained improperly.
If you're getting callbacks but not being booked, chances are, what you're doing is pretty much right, but you just aren't exactly what the producers are looking for.  Sometimes working families and the actors need to look as if they were related to each other.  Perhaps everyone else in the group is of a particular ethnic background, and you aren't.  There's not much you can do about that one, is there?  A few years ago I had the good fortune to do a Maxwell House Coffee commercial and one of the actresses with whom I worked put it about as well as I ever heard it said.  "If they're looking for chocolate cake and you look enough like chocolate cake, you have a chance."  She was right; you may be the best angel food cake in the world, but if they want chocolate, you just won't get  the job.  It isn't only true of commercials, either.  I almost lost a very good co-starring role in mini-series because almost everyone else in the cast was very tall.  It had nothing at all to do with my ability as an actor, and certainly nothing to do with my quality as a human being.
So How do you deal with the disappointment?  Treat the audition as a job because that's what your job is . . . to go in and do the best you're capable of that day.  (And believe me, some days I'm more capable than others.)  Don't waste time beating yourself up, because that's what it is . . . a waste of time.  Instead, ask yourself, "What went well?" because that's what you want to repeat next time.  Then ask yourself what you need to work on so you can do better next time.  Use it as a learning experience to become a better auditioner.
Before I close this , there's one more "P" and that's be

Pleasant - nobody wants to work with an uptight grouch! Expect to like the auditioners, and chances are they'll like you.
Here's to bigger and better auditions for all of us,
Charlie

New Classes Scheduled at the Mosaic Acting Academy

THE MOSAIC ACTING SYSTEM

"Emotionology and the Whelan Recording Technique"

WEEKEND INTENSIVE

SATURDAY, MAY 1 AND SUNDAY MAY 2

9:00 am - 6:00 pm

MOSAIC ACTING ACADEMY

Rancho Cordova

(directions on receipt of deposit)

I've been acting and directing for over forty years, and I've never found anything as easy and effective, or as much fun to work with as The MOSAIC ACTING SYSTEM. (www.mosaicacting.com) It is the only acting system in the world that takes advantage of the fantastic advances made in general education through the application of a Learning Styles paradigm. I've taught and trained instructors in London, Toronto, and cities in the USA, as well as presenting Mosaic Acting to schools and teachers from middle-school to the University level, including the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

The Whelan Recording Technique is the perfect Whole Brain teaching/learning technique. Character, relationship, emotional base and line memorization are achieved with ease and speed never before experienced. It's also the most fun an actor can have!

While emotions are the very core of the actors art, there has never been a program until EMOTIONOLOGY that provided the tools for actors to study them in an objective and systematic fashion. MAS provides that and more.

Auditioning With The Teleprompter and Earprompter

Saturday, May 8

10 AM - 4 PM

Teleprompters are becoming more and more common on the audition process. Come to the Mosaic Acting Studio from 7 -10 PM. and spend a few hours with Ric Ramey as he teaches you the correct way to audition with a teleprompter.. Rick taught teleprompter skills in Portland, Oregon with Joan Wainwright, and brings those skills to us during this one day event.

Being able to use the Earprompter is a tremendous asset that can make you more valuable to the producer - and it's not just for news anchors!. Imagine being able to deliver pages of technical or medical dialog or any kind of copy with no script in hand. You can handle and relate to props, products, and the audience. This portion of the class will be presented by Charlie Holliday.
Tuition for this class is $150 and includes both sections. Preregistration required, so send your $75 deposit to: Charlie Holliday, Box 1142, Rancho Cordova, CA 95742-1141, or you may click hereto register with your credit card or PayPal account (3% service charge.) on line

PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETINGS AT THE BIG IDEA THEATRE:
At the Sunday, May 23, workshop, Ron Tochterman's "Someone You Know is Guilty" (formerly known as "Rough Justice") will be read and discussed. The play's themes are implied in its title: How can a criminal defense attorney represent someone he knows is guilty?  And everyone's guilty of something. An observant Jew struggles to reconcile his religious values with what's expected of him as a criminal defense attorney.

All activities are at the Big Idea Theatre, 1616 Del Paso Blvd (in the same complex as Fran's Cafe and the Supper Club, across Del Paso and a little east of KFC).
Workshops are monthly on Sundays at 7:00 PM on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating.
Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights.

"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere. Through a
cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."

WORKSHOPS: At each workshop, original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production. Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area. There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.

STAGED READINGS: Playwrights participating in the once-a-month Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production. A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.

Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works. The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers. Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com(916-383-9267 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              916-383-9267      end_of_the_skype_highlighting)

From a Mosaic Acting Academy Student and Working Actress ...
Heather Pier
I recently made the switch to working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting business (just like any technology) changes happen fast.
The one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned out to be right on the money.  LA is a big and expensive move to make. Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes. He's a pro and a wealth of information. He'll give you good, solid, up-to-date information that you can use.  -  Heather Pier
