Auditions, Announcements, and Other Info for April 7

|
Greetings!
|
Okay,
so you finally have an audition! You
work on your character, study your lines, and make some strong choices about
the script. You show up 20 minutes
before your audition time, in case there have been changes in the script, sign in
and wait to be called in. You're finally
ushered in and find the casting director and production folks to be pleasant and
professional people. You ask the right
questions and proceed with your audition, and it feels really good . . . they
seem to like you. Then you go home and
wait for the call, hoping to hear those four beautiful words, "you got the
job!" . . . and the call never comes.
One of the toughest things for actors to deal
with is rejection, or perceived rejection. We may begin to doubt ourselves and perhaps our
abilities as an actor. We go to audition after audition, and just seem to never
get the job. Is it just us? Is it them? Let's look
at some possible reasons for not getting that call.
Since joining forces with Everett Blix
and Ric Ramey to form the new and improved I've gained
a whole new respect for the casting and audition process, and over my next few
newsletters I'm going to approach the subject from a casting director's point
of view.
First of all, are you even being called in? If not, there are at least a couple of things that
could be wrong.
1. Your headshot doesn't work. Nobody cares how much you pay for your
headshot, but you do need to have an up-to-date professionally done 8 x 10 color
photograph. Most importantly, it needs
to look like you; we should recognize you when you walk in the door. Have you cut or colored your hair? Have you gained or lost significant weight? If so it's time for a new shot.
2. You or your agent are submitting you for
roles you just aren't right for. It's
important to know where you "fit" as an actor in this business. There is a survey method I teach in my
classes to help you determine your "type" so you'll know how you are
perceived by others - especially the people who are casting. By submitting for roles that you're really
right for, you'll increase your odds of being called in. It's important to know who you are, not who you wish you were. By doing so you can miximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.
I
hope I've given you some food for
thought and we'll continue on this subject in the next Newslett
Break a leg, and I'll see you on location!

Larry brings Jack home from the hospital Carly is in the cabin. Larry tells
Jack that Carly is his wife (Maureen) so Jack won't worry about anything but
getting the novel finished. When Maureen shows up, Larry persuades her to

PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETINGS AT THE BIG IDEA THEATRE: All activities are at the Big Idea Theatre, 1616 Del Paso Blvd (in the same complex as Fran's Cafe and the Supper Club, across Del Paso and a little east of KFC). Workshops are monthly on Sundays at 7:00 PM on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights. At the Sunday, April 18, workshop, Michael von Haenel's "Four Pennies"will be read and discussed. This is a drama that consists of four separate and apparently unrelated stories interwoven with transitional narrative. As each of the successive stories unfolds the audience, with the help of a Master of Ceremonies, comes to realize the common theme produced by the combination of the stories.
"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere. Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."
WORKSHOPS: At each workshop, original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production. Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area. There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.
STAGED READINGS: Playwrights participating in the once-a-month Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production. A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts. Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works. The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers. Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.
For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267. Please let me know if you would like to be removed from this list.

I recently made the switch to
working in the Sac/SF area to the LA scene. I had taken classes from
local teachers and had gotten tons of feeback about what to expect and
strategies to use when I got to LA. However, with one exception, the
advice that I got from people up here were just plain WRONG! Perhaps
they have worked in this business in the past, but in the acting
business (just like any technology) changes happen fast. The
one exception was Charlie Holliday. It pays to get advice from an actor
with so much recent experience in Hollywood. All of his advice turned
out to be right on the money. LA is a big and expensive move to make.
Save yourself time, money and frustration by taking Charlie's classes.

up-to-date information that you can use. - Heather Pier

Mosaic Acting "Gear"
is now available!

People have been asking where to get the MOSAIC ACTING clothing articles with the beautifully embroidered logo I've been wearing - polo shirts, long sleeved Tees, jackets, etc. I get them from a company called Queensboro. If you'd like to order something, go to the Queensboro web site and check them out. When you find what you want, email the
article number and color selection and size you want to me and I'll put
together an order as soon as four of you give me payment for the
items. (I'll pay the shipping charges for you.) You can mix and match
items, and there's no minimum order for you. Give me a call or email
if you have any questions. Thanks, Charlie
